Supergirl Review | Better or Worse Than Woman of Tomorrow?

The DC Universe continues with Supergirl, but does Kara Zor-El's first solo film soar to new heights or fall short of the incredible expectations set by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow? In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we dive into a full review of the new Supergirl movie with a spoiler-free first half followed by a full spoiler discussion where we break down the biggest moments, performances, action sequences, characters, and how the film compares to the beloved DC Comics graphic novel that inspired it. SPOILER WARNING The first half of this episode is completely spoiler-free, making it the perfect review to watch before heading to the theater. The second half contains our full spoiler discussion of Supergirl. In our spoiler-free review, we discuss: • Milly Alcock's outstanding performance as Kara Zor-El • Jason Momoa's debut as Lobo • The movie's action sequences and visual effects • The overall story and pacing • Whether Supergirl is a strong addition to James Gunn's new DC Universe • How it compares to other recent DC movies Then we jump into full spoilers to discuss: • The biggest story moments • Kara's emotional journey • Lobo's role in the film • The supporting cast • Favorite and least favorite scenes • The ending explained • Themes and character arcs • What worked... and what didn't • The future of the DCU One thing we all agreed on is that Milly Alcock absolutely shines as Supergirl. She brings warmth, vulnerability, strength, and charisma to Kara Zor-El, making her the emotional core of the entire movie. Jason Momoa is also a blast as Lobo, even if his role is relatively small. Where our discussion gets more interesting is when we compare the movie to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the acclaimed comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely that we reviewed last week. While the film improves on a few aspects of the source material, including pacing, action, and a more restrained version of Ruthye, it also loses much of the emotional depth, nuance, and heart that made the graphic novel so memorable. Ultimately, we found Supergirl to be an entertaining but uneven superhero movie. It doesn't reinvent the genre, and a one-dimensional villain along with a familiar, trope-driven plot keep it from reaching its full potential. Still, if you can separate the movie from its comic book inspiration, there's plenty of fun to be had. Whether you're a lifelong DC Comics fan, eagerly following James Gunn's DC Universe, or simply curious about the latest superhero movie, this review has you covered. Spider-Noir Review | Better Than We Ever Expected

Spider-Noir may be one of the strangest Spider-Man adaptations ever made... and somehow, it works. Going into Spider-Noir, our expectations were fairly modest. A noir detective series starring a version of Spider-Man sounded interesting on paper, but we weren't sure how successfully the show would balance classic superhero action with old-school detective storytelling. After finishing the series, we were pleasantly surprised by just how much we enjoyed it. In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we give our full spoiler-filled review of Spider-Noir, discussing the story, performances, visuals, action sequences, comic book inspirations, noir influences, and why this series stands out in today's crowded superhero landscape. COLD OPEN (First 20 Minutes) Before diving into Spider-Noir, we discuss several major topics from the worlds of Marvel, comic books, and pop culture: • Breaking down the latest Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer • Our biggest Spider-Man theories and predictions • The possibility of Sadie Sink playing Jean Grey • Spider-Man: Brand New Day's massive opening day ticket pre-sale numbers • Why excitement for the next Spider-Man movie is through the roof • Spoiler-light discussion of the leaked Avengers: Doomsday footage • A guest host's experience binging the entire Daredevil saga • Thoughts on Netflix's Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again • Why Matt Murdock remains one of Marvel's most beloved characters FULL SPOILER REVIEW After the cold open, we jump into a deep spoiler discussion of Spider-Noir. Topics include: • Ben Reilly's portrayal and character arc • The incredible black-and-white presentation • The equally impressive color version of the series • The show's noir detective atmosphere • How Spider-Noir balances crime drama and superhero storytelling • The cast and standout performances • Classic Spider-Man characters reimagined through a noir lens • Favorite episodes and moments • The show's biggest strengths and weaknesses • Inconsistent power scaling and character abilities • Plot threads that deserved more development • What a potential second season could explore One of the biggest surprises of the series is just how committed it is to the noir genre. Rather than simply placing Spider-Man in a different visual setting, Spider-Noir fully embraces detective storytelling, mystery, suspense, crime, corruption, and classic noir aesthetics while still delivering the comic book action fans expect. While we don't think the show is perfect, we absolutely loved its visual style, strong performances, unique atmosphere, and willingness to take creative risks. In an era where superhero stories can sometimes feel repetitive, Spider-Noir manages to carve out its own identity and offer something genuinely different. If you're a fan of Spider-Man, Marvel Comics, detective stories, superhero television, comic book adaptations, Daredevil, Marvel Studios, noir films, crime dramas, or pop culture discussions, this episode is for you. The Comic Behind The Supergirl Movie | Woman of Tomorrow Review

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is widely considered one of the best Supergirl stories ever written, but does it deserve all the praise? With the upcoming Supergirl movie drawing heavy inspiration from Tom King's acclaimed DC Comics graphic novel, we decided it was finally time to sit down and read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. After finishing the book, we found ourselves agreeing on some things, disagreeing on others, and having a fascinating discussion about one of DC's most celebrated modern comics. In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we break down Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in a full spoiler-filled review, discussing the story, characters, themes, artwork, pacing, world-building, and whether this graphic novel deserves its reputation as a modern DC Comics classic. COLD OPEN (First 30 Minutes) Before discussing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, we dive into several major topics from the worlds of comic books, superhero movies, and pop culture: • The new Lanterns trailer and its detective-inspired mystery elements • Our thoughts on Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart's dynamic • Why Lanterns could become one of DC Studios' most important projects • The endlessly delayed Blade movie and why Marvel Studios can't seem to get it made • What makes Blade such a seemingly straightforward superhero movie to adapt • The surprising announcement of the Jimmy Olsen & Gorilla Grodd television series • Our theories on what that bizarre DC project could become • New casting announcements for The Batman Part II • Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, and Brian Tyree Henry joining the cast • Speculation surrounding Harvey Dent, Gilda Dent, Victor Zsasz, Harvey Bullock, and other Gotham City characters FULL SPOILER REVIEW After the cold open, we jump into a deep spoiler discussion of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Topics include: • Kara Zor-El's characterization • The story's themes and emotional core • Tom King's writing style • Bilquis Evely's incredible artwork • The strengths and weaknesses of the narrative • Pacing issues and storytelling choices • Favorite and least favorite moments • The supporting cast • The book's entertainment value • How faithful the Supergirl movie should be to the comic • Why our opinions on the story differ so much While all three of us agree that the artwork is phenomenal and that Kara is written exceptionally well, our opinions diverge when it comes to the pacing, character decisions, and overall effectiveness of the story. Two hosts came away largely positive on the graphic novel, while one host found himself far less impressed by the experience. Whether you're preparing for the upcoming Supergirl movie, looking for great DC Comics recommendations, or simply curious about one of the most talked-about superhero comics of the past decade, this discussion is for you. Star Wars: Maul Shadow Lord Review | Better Than We Expected!

Star Wars: Maul Shadow Lord surprised us in the best way possible. Going into this new Star Wars series, our expectations were fairly modest. While Darth Maul has always been one of the franchise's most iconic villains, we weren't convinced that another Maul-centered story would bring anything new to the table. After watching all ten episodes, we're happy to admit we were wrong. In this episode of SuperHero Homies, we give our full spoiler-filled review of Star Wars: Maul Shadow Lord, discussing the story, characters, action sequences, major reveals, connections to Star Wars lore, and what the future could hold for Darth Maul and the galaxy far, far away. COLD OPEN (First 21 Minutes) Before diving into Maul Shadow Lord, we discuss several major topics from the worlds of comic books, superhero movies, and pop culture: • Why Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder has become such a massive success • Bruce Wayne's lack of an internal monologue and how it changes the character • Why readers are embracing a more violent, immature, and physically imposing Batman • The new Supergirl movie teaser and Kara Zor-El's first meeting with Superman • Our upcoming Supergirl review and discussion of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow • Lex Luthor's comic-accurate power suit from the recent Superman set photos • First impressions of the Lanterns television series trailer • The future of the DC Universe under James Gunn FULL SPOILER REVIEW After the cold open, we jump into a deep spoiler discussion of Maul Shadow Lord. We discuss: • Darth Maul's character development • The show's fast-paced storytelling • The impressive lightsaber duels and action sequences • New Star Wars characters and villains • The shocking reveal in Episode 9 • Connections to The Phantom Menace • What happened to Maul after Naboo • Star Wars canon and lore implications • The future of Maul's criminal empire • The next chapter of Star Wars animation and television While Maul Shadow Lord isn't necessarily groundbreaking television, we found it to be one of the most enjoyable and cohesive Star Wars projects in recent memory. The series expands Darth Maul's story in meaningful ways, delivers exciting action, introduces compelling new characters, and leaves fans with plenty to speculate about moving forward. If you're a fan of Star Wars, Darth Maul, The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Phantom Menace, Andor, Ahsoka, Star Wars lore, comic books, superhero media, or pop culture discussions, this episode is for you.
