Felicia was at the Pentagon on 9/11

Today marks the 25th anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked some airplanes and crashed them in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 innocent people lost their lives that day in those attacks. Many people remember that day very clearly. It’s one of those times where you recall exactly where you were when you first heard the news, and as the events unfolded throughout that morning. Here on the podcast, every year in September we dedicate an episode to the memory of 9/11. We hear someone tell their story of what they experienced on that day. The past episodes have featured guests who were in New York City. For a long time, I’ve wanted to have a guest on who was at the Pentagon on September 11. Those stories are not as easy to find. Earlier this year, Felicia contacted me to tell me about her experience at the Pentagon, and I’m pleased to bring that to you today. May we never forget. Kevin was crushed by a boulder

A lot of people have a serious fear – they can’t stand the feeling of being trapped in some way. And really, there are a variety of ways this can present itself. It could be a really crowded, small room where the exits are not easy to access. Or it could be when you’re on your back and going into an MRI machine and the top surface is like an inch from your face. Some people fear being in a stuck elevator. I remember having that feeling in high school PE class. We had a few classes where the boys were taught wrestling. So one by one, we’d get paired up with an opponent who was hopefully somewhat similar in size, on a large mat in the gym. And whenever I happened to be underneath the other guy, feeling his weight holding me down, unable to move, I’d briefly get a real panicky feeling until I was able to get up. Did not like that at all – and I was only there for a few seconds. My guest today, Kevin, knows that feeling. Except in his case, he was stuck there for a lot longer than a few seconds. And what had him trapped weighed about 8000 pounds. Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/267 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Tracie's mother was Judy

Please note that this episode of What Was That Like has a content warning, for discussion of suicide. Do you remember when you were seven years old? At that age, your biggest concerns are playing with your friends, learning new things at school, riding your bike, and what to put on your Christmas list. At least that’s how it is for a lot of kids. And that’s pretty much how it was for Tracie, who you’re about to hear from. She got along with her older brother and sister, and she loved her mom and dad. To anyone who knew the family, everything seemed fine. But one day, Tracie’s mom made a decision that no one expected – and it changed their family forever. If you’d like to contact Tracie, her website is: https://meetmeridian.co/ Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/266 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz.
