    Episode 623: Coyote Vs. Acme, Boorman and the Devil, Fame (1980): Was It Great or Were You 8?

    We'e been taking a little time off at the end of summer, but we'd never abandon you entirely. Here's what we've reviewed lately on Breakfast All Day. COYOTE VS. ACME. Warner Bros. shelved this movie for the tax write-off in July 2023. Now it's in theaters thanks to Ketchup Entertainment, and the fact that it's great is the best revenge. Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena and all your favorite Looney Tunes characters star in this hilarious live action/animation hybrid. BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL. If you love movies about making movies -- especially movies that are notorious flops -- you'll enjoy this documentary about John Boorman's "Exorcist II: The Heretic." Alonso has to recuse himself because he's friends with writer-director-editor David Kittredge, but we both agree that this is an impressive and entertaining deep-dive into 1970s Hollywood. In theaters. FAME (1980): WAS IT GREAT OR WERE YOU 8? It's our favorite game to play, where we look back at the movies we loved from childhood to see whether they still hold up today. This time, Christy picked "Fame," the musical sensation about students at New York's performing arts high school striving for stardom. It won two Oscars and spawned a hit album and TV series.     Episode 622: It Ends (NO Spoilers!), The Rivals of Amziah King, Don't Say Good Luck, Movie News LIVE!

    It's Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday, with some truly great new films. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day: IT ENDS (NO Spoilers!): It's been such a great year for indie horror movies from exciting, young directors, and "It Ends" continues that trend. The debut feature from writer-director Alex Ullom finds four friends stuck in a car on a seemingly endless road, post-college. This is a non-spoiler review, because we want you to experience this for yourself, but join us at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, Sept. 8 for a LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel. In theaters. THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING: It's a terrible title for one of the best films we've seen all year. Matthew McConaughey is mesmerizing as a beekeeper and musician in small-town Oklahoma. Angelina LookingGlass is a tremendous find as the former foster daughter who comes back into his life. The less you know going into Andrew Patterson's film, the better. In theaters, but not for long, so look for it near you. DON'T SAY GOOD LUCK: Sunny Sandler is charming in this coming-of-age dramedy from director and co-writer Julia Hart ("Fast Color"). She plays a teenager who gets the lead in her high school production of "Waitress: The Musical" just as her mother's cancer returns. Melanie Lynskey, Stephanie Beatriz and Steve Buscemi lead the strong ensemble cast. Streaming now on Netflix. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Always a lot to talk about, even at the end of summer, including the death of Hayden Panettiere, "Dune: Part Three" tickets, D23 announcements, the latest milestone for "The Odyssey" and more.     Episode 621: The End of Oak Street, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, The Wrong Girls, Movie News LIVE!

    An absolutely jam-packed, mid-August episode of Breakfast All Day. Here's what we've got for you: THE END OF OAK STREET. Suburbia and dinosaurs and divorce! This isn't a Spielberg movie, but it sure feels like it. Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery star as a family who wake up and discover that their pleasant cul-de-sac has been picked up and plopped down in the prehistoric era. From writer-director David Robert Mitchell. In theaters. TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA. We're catching up with Jane Schoenbrun's follow-up to "I Saw the TV Glow" as it expands into more theaters. Hannah Einbinder stars as a queer filmmaker who's reinvigorating a problematic horror franchise, with hopes that its reclusive, original Final Girl (Gillian Anderson) will star. Funny, thoughtful, self-aware and brimming with clever details. In theaters. THE WRONG GIRLS. Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat co-star as stoner best friends who stumble across a mysterious substance that gives them unexpected powers, sort of? The feature debut from writer-director Dylan Meyer (Stewart's wife) is a larky romp across Los Angeles. Maybe it helps if you're high, too. Co-starring LaKeith Stanfield, Kate McKinnon, Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! What a treat! The great Dave White (Alonso's husband) joined our Friday livestream, so this went extra long. Among the many topics we covered were the latest in the Paramount/Warner Bros. merger, Nikki from "Obsession" joining Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, Nicholas Hoult joining the "Harry Potter" series and John Oliver's soap opera run.     Episode 620: One Night Only, Tony, Movie News LIVE!

    We're in a bit of an in-between space as the summer blockbusters are winding down but fall festival season hasn't quite begun. But we've always got thoughts on whatever the latest movies are. Here's what we reviewed this week on our Breakfast All Day podcast: ONE NIGHT ONLY. It's "The Purge," but for sex. People can only do it once a year over a 12-hour period for ... reasons? We have lots of questions about this film's internal logic, as well as its general purpose. Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner star. In theaters. TONY. Dominic Sessa stars as a young Anthony Bourdain, making mistakes and pissing people off during the summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Mass. Directed by Matt Johnson, who also made "Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie" this year. This one, we loved. In limited release now before opening nationwide Aug. 21. MOVIE NEWS LIVE!     Episode 619: Spider-Man: Brand New Day LIVE Spoiler Chat

    What a great turnout we had for our spoiler livestream about "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."  Here, we get into all the revelations we didn't want to ruin in our non-spoiler review, including who Sadie Sink plays, what Damage Control is really up to, and what the last shot of the movie means. The fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie had a record-breaking opening weekend, so we're assuming a lot of you have seen it at this point.     Episode 618: I Want Your Sex, Sheep in the Box, Movie News LIVE!

    We already reviewed the big movie of the week, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," earlier this week. But other movies exist in the world, so you get Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday. Here's what we discussed on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day: I WANT YOUR SEX. Between this and the Wham! in China documentary, it's an accidental George Michael theme week, but we're not complaining. Olivia Wilde stars as a caustic and quick-witted dom to Cooper Hoffman's eager and besotted sub. The latest from veteran queer filmmaker Gregg Araki takes place in the heightened world of LA's contemporary art scene. This movie is a hoot. In theaters. SHEEP IN THE BOX. A rare miss from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda. His film explores some familiar themes about creating a family in unexpected ways, but does so in languid, superficial fashion. A couple in the near future brings a synthetic boy into their home to replace the 7-year-old son they lost. Sounds like a moving premise, but this never grabbed us. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Another extra-long segment because there was so much to discuss, including the huge Thursday box office for "Spider-Man," news out of Comic-Con, Disney canceling "Wonder Man," and the tragic death os Glen Hansard.     Episode 617: Spider-Man: Brand New Day (NO Spoilers!), WHAM! 10 Days in China

    We're swinging by with a quick, mid-week drop at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed on our latest episode: SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY. Tom Holland thwips his way across New York City once again as Peter Parker. But in between fighting crime and taking on a powerful new foe, he also must feel his feelings about being isolated from Ned and MJ. Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Liza Colón-Zayas and Sadie Sink co-star.     Episode 616: Her Private Hell, Hadestown: The Musical, Movie News LIVE!

    It's an accidental theme week here at Breakfast All Day. We love when those happen. We're in a bit of a lull for new movies between "The Odyseey" last week and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" next week, but here's what we reviewed for you. HER PRIVATE HELL. The first film in a decade from Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "The Neon Demon") has lavish style but it's totally inscrutable. Go for the clothes and the production design if you must see it. Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton and Havana Rose Liu star. In theaters. HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL. This is an extraordinary live capture of AnaÏs Mitchell's Tony-winning musical. All the stars from the original Broadway run are here for this London West End performance. If you've seen "Hadestown," you'll want to see it again in this thrilling, intimate form. And if you've never seen it, prepare to be dazzled. In theaters for only about a week. Find out more and get tickets here. MOVIE NEWS LIVE!
