Episode 180: Cal Flyn - The Savage Landscape

Cal Flyn is an award-winning writer from the Highlands of Scotland. She writes creative nonfiction, literary criticism, and long-form journalism. Cal’s journalistic writing has been published in Granta, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Times, The Economist, and others. On this episode of Nature Revisited, Flyn poses the question "What is Wilderness"? For thousands of years, people have sought out uncontrolled, unknown, or uncharted nature in search of religious epiphany, self-actualization, and an escape from modern life. But having traversed the most forbidding, untamed and inhospitable wild lands—the supposedly uninhabited wilds of the world—she found that such truly untouched lands don't exist: Nearly every wilderness has been or is actively inhabited by humans. By viewing the notion of wilderness as a human construct, Flyn reveals how much we can still discover in wilderness, both as an idea and a vital part of the living world. www.calflyn.com/ www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/761751/the-savage-landscape-by-cal-flyn/ Listen to Nature Revisited on your favorite podcast apps, on YouTube, or at https://noordenproductions.com Subscribe on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/bdz4s9d7 Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/5n7yx28t Subscribe on Youtube Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/bddd55v9 Podlink: https://pod.link/1456657951 Support Nature Revisited https://noordenproductions.com/support Nature Revisited is produced by Stefan van Norden and Charles Geoghegan. Revisit: Dr. Vandana Shiva - The Nature of Nature

The author of more than 20 books, Dr. Vandana Shiva is an Indian scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate, ecofeminist and anti-globalization writer. On this episode of Nature Revisited, Dr. Shiva lays out the emergency we all face: extinction, climate havoc and the global food crisis. Our future, Shiva argues, lies in following the ecological laws of the earth by de-colonising, decreasing food miles, de-industrialising and de-globalizing food systems. A future sustained by biodiversity, local foods, and end to deforestation and an ethical and organic farming system in which degenerative cycles are transformed into regenerative cycles. Episode 179: Richard Louv - Noticing

Richard Louv is an American journalist and Audubon Medal winning author best known for his 2005 bestselling book Last Child in the Woods. His work focuses heavily on the psychological, physical, and cognitive benefits of human-nature interaction across all ages. He coined the term "nature-deficit disorder" to describe the behavioral and health consequences of children becoming increasingly detached from unstructured, outdoor play and the natural world. On this episode, Louv returns to Nature Revisted to talk about discovering who we are by noticing things about the natural world through exploration. Louv shows how, by tapping into the thirty or more human senses we have, we can develop skills––sensory, scientific, artistic, and spiritual––to see, experience, and become enchanted by the otherworlds of nature. https://richardlouv.com https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/richard-louv/noticing/9781643753034/ Listen to Nature Revisited on your favorite podcast apps, on YouTube, or at https://noordenproductions.com Subscribe on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/bdz4s9d7 Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/5n7yx28t Subscribe on Youtube Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/bddd55v9 Podlink: https://pod.link/1456657951 Support Nature Revisited https://noordenproductions.com/support Nature Revisited is produced by Stefan van Norden and Charles Geoghegan. Episode 178: Dillon Osleger - Trail Work

Dillon Osleger is a scientist, writer, and environmental advocate whose work is anchored in society's relationship with wild and rapidly changing environments. With an academic background in geology, ecology, and climate science, he has spent over a decade working on trail restoration, land management, and public lands policy across the American West. On this episode of Nature Revisited, Osleger reminds us of the forgotten trails of the Western United States. One of the greatest infrastructure investments in the nation’s history—paths through our public lands—has been rubbed away by time and deliberate neglect. As federal investment dwindles, more than two-thirds of a nationwide network of wagon roads, water sources, trap lines, and Indigenous trading trails and campgrounds have gradually been erased from the map. Asking how we can better care for the places that are claimed for the American public, Osleger offers a land ethic born of joy in stewardship, attention to history and community, and living and treading lightly. https://dillonosleger.com/ https://www.heydaybooks.com/catalog/trail-work/ Listen to Nature Revisited on your favorite podcast apps, on YouTube, or at https://noordenproductions.com Subscribe on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/bdz4s9d7 Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/5n7yx28t Subscribe on Youtube Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/bddd55v9 Podlink: https://pod.link/1456657951 Support Nature Revisited https://noordenproductions.com/support Nature Revisited is produced by Stefan van Norden and Charles Geoghegan. Revisit: Amy Tan - The Backyard Bird Chronicles

Amy Tan is an American author best known for her novel The Joy Luck Club (1989) as well as other novels, short story collections, children's books, and a memoir. Tan is the recipient of the National Humanities Medal, among other awards, and her writing has been praised for its bravery in exploring both the personal struggles and triumphs of immigrant families. On this episode of Nature Revisited, Tan discusses her latest work The Backyard Bird Chronicles. What initially began as a way to find respite from the country's increasing social division, hostility and misinformation, the act of observing and drawing the birds in her backyard became something greater - a meaningful way to connect with nature, and imagine the intricate lives of the birds she admired.
