I was late to The Office, and late to the podcast. Meaning, I’m watching the show and listening to the podcast long after they first aired. Much of the show and podcast is very cute, amusing, and fun.
I read many comments about how insecure Angela seems to be, and how she’s always trying to puff herself up as more significant than she was to the show. How her contributions tend to be rather tangential to the podcast. And rather repetitive (how many times do we need to hear that she’s from a small town in Texas?).
At first, I thought the criticism was unfair, but as I listened more, my opinion started to shift. Then came the “Casino Night” episode of the podcast. Jenna and John were talking about the kissing scene, how it was a big deal on set, how it was carefully set up with the lighting and camera angles, each actor was carefully prepared, and how for the two people actually in the scene, it was their first or second ever on-screen kiss. In the middle of that, sounding like a petulant child who wants to be included in the adult conversation, Angela blurts out “Mine was with Dwight!” **CRINGE** First of all, it wasn’t with “Dwight” it was with Rainn. John didn’t say that his first kissing scenes were with Pam. As a part of acting, an actor kisses another actor, not the character that person is playing. Secondly, how was that even remotely relevant to the gravitas of the scene being discussed? After that, Angela’s attention-seeking has been increasingly apparent. It’s starting to make the podcast hard to listen to. If she doesn’t want to seem to be riding Jenna’s coattails, she shouldn’t act like it.
And Angela, for crying out loud, it’s “…and ME”. As in, “Steve talked to Jenna and me.” Yes, it IS “Jenna and I were on set.” But it’s NOT “Steve talked to Jenna and I.” The objective case of the pronoun is “me”. You wouldn’t say “Steve talked to I.”
