As one who grew up blacktail hunting small parcels with my bow, it was great to see you highlight the grey ghosts a little. They can be frustrating with their nocturnal habits!

For me it’s has to be them mule deers as I’ve been hunting them for 7 years now and yet to harvest one, the country the live in and how different they are from white tail and black tails just gets me going climbing steep mountains to find these elusive creatures is just what I look forward to every year although I’ve had many opportunities and came very close to harvesting a mule deer i just haven’t connected with one yet hoping 2025!
Best deer species

Blacktail deer hunting is like the ninja of the deer world. While mule deer are out there flexing in wide-open fields and whitetails are posting up by cornfields, blacktails are sneaky little forest ninjas, hiding in the shadows, thinking they’re masters of disguise. They’re basically the deer equivalent of someone who wears all black and only emerges at night. If you want a real challenge, try hunting a blacktail—you’ll spend more time feeling like you’re lost in the woods than actually hunting, and by the time you spot one, it’s probably laughing at you from behind a tree. Sure, they’re small, but they make up for it with attitude. They’re the “don’t-make-a-sound-or-I’ll-vanish-forever” kind of deer. Plus, hunting them is a fantastic way to sharpen your patience. You’ll develop an intense relationship with your binoculars, trekking boots, and a new appreciation for silence. When you finally bag one, it feels like you’ve just conquered the entire forest. It’s the deer hunt equivalent of winning an Olympic gold medal in stealth!
Yeah buddy!

I really enjoying the podcast, being from Oregon I hunt a lot of the same species as these guys. Their podcasts on fall bear inspired me to give it a go last year; unsuccessful but still a blast. BTW Blacktail are the best deer species, those southern Oregon bucks are beasts!
