From Oncologist to Patient: Dr. Hwang on Breast Cancer, Survivorship & Finding a New Way Forward

What happens when the woman who has spent years treating breast cancer suddenly finds herself sitting on the other side of the diagnosis? In this deeply personal episode of The She Believed She Could™ Podcast, Allison Walsh sits down with Dr. Catherine “Sue” Hwang, a board-certified radiation oncologist specializing in breast cancer, who knows the cancer journey from both sides—as a physician and as a patient. After more than 15 years of caring for women with breast cancer, Dr. Hwang never expected to become a breast cancer patient herself. A routine mammogram revealed calcifications, followed by the discovery of multiple masses and an abnormal lymph node. Suddenly, the physician who understood the treatments, side effects, complications, and statistics was forced to experience the fear and uncertainty of being the patient herself. Dr. Hwang shares what she learned about the patient experience, breast cancer treatment, motherhood, vulnerability, hyper-independence, and accepting support. She talks honestly about how her community rallied around her, from bringing meals to helping with her children, and how the experience completely changed the way she thinks about community and caring for others. But one of the most important lessons came after treatment. Dr. Hwang explains why the end of chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation doesn't necessarily mean the end of the cancer journey. For many women, survivorship can bring an unexpected emotional and physical transition—a period where treatment ends, medical appointments become less frequent, everyone assumes you're okay, and you're left wondering, “What now?” That realization inspired Dr. Hwang to advocate for better breast cancer survivorship care and to help patients understand that struggling after treatment is not a failure. It's part of the journey. She also shares practical advice about mammograms, breast exams, knowing your body, recognizing potential breast cancer symptoms, and becoming your own healthcare advocate. Her message is especially powerful for women who have ever been told they're “too young” to worry about breast cancer or who feel uncomfortable pushing for additional answers. Dr. Hwang's story ultimately comes back to one powerful idea: you don't have to know how you're going to get through the entire journey. Sometimes, you simply have to take the next step. And then the next one. And eventually, you may look back and realize just how much you were capable of all along. What You’ll Learn in This EpisodeWhat it’s really like when a breast cancer oncologist becomes a cancer patient herselfWhy the period after breast cancer treatment can sometimes be harder than treatment itselfHow to navigate the emotional and physical challenges of cancer survivorship and finding a new normalWhy accepting help and leaning on your community and support system can be a powerful form of strengthHow cancer can change your perspective on motherhood, identity, work, and what truly mattersThe importance of mammograms, knowing your body, and paying attention to changes or symptomsWhy women need to become their own healthcare advocates and seek answers when something doesn’t feel rightHow to cope with the fear and uncertainty surrounding cancer recurrenceHow Dr. Hwang’s experience as a patient changed the way she now cares for and communicates with breast cancer patientsWhy you don’t have to know how you’ll get through the entire journey—you can simply take the next step, one day at a timeIf you or someone you know needs support on their cancer journey, visit: http://adventhealthcancerinstitute.com  This episode is sponsored by AdventHealth for Women. What if the key to a more impactful 2027 is the work you do before the new year begins? In this amazing episode of The She Believed She Could™ Podcast, Allison Walsh sits down with Carolina Flores to take you behind the vision for Iconic Impact, an intentional experience created for ambitious women, entrepreneurs, leaders, thought leaders, and change-makers who are ready to create their next incredible chapter. For women who have spent years building behind the scenes, Allison and Carolina also explore the next step of becoming more visible. Whether you're growing a business, advancing your career, building a personal brand, leading a nonprofit, or expanding your influence, visibility can help you take the expertise and experience you've already built and turn it into greater impact. And then there's the power of community. Iconic Impact was created to bring together ambitious women who understand what it means to build something meaningful—and who believe that success becomes even more powerful when we use it to support, champion, and create opportunities for other women. From the incredible speaker lineup to the hands-on Impact Lab, meaningful connections, and the new Impact Grants supporting women entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders, Allison and Carolina share what makes this experience different and why every detail has been created with intention. If you're ready to strengthen your visibility, expand your influence, connect with women who understand the journey, and create a more intentional next chapter, this conversation will give you a glimpse of what's waiting for you at Iconic Impact. Doing More Wasn’t the Answer: My 3-Part Business Reset

What if you don’t need to do more to create greater momentum? What if you need to pull back long enough to see what is working, what no longer belongs, and what deserves your full energy next? After a wonderfully full—and admittedly wild—summer, Allison began looking at her business through a different lens. She created space, ruthlessly evaluated what the company was carrying, and established extreme clarity for herself and her team around the next chapter of She Believed She Could. In this episode, Allison shares the three decisions that are reshaping the remainder of her year and challenges listeners to consider whether constant movement is taking them closer to the future they want—or simply keeping them busy. This conversation is for the woman with a full calendar, a growing vision, and the sense that something needs to become clearer before she moves forward. Memorable Moments From the Episode “There was only one week all summer that we were home for the whole week. It was a lot, but it’s also what I prayed for. I’m incredibly grateful that we were able to do so many things together as a family.” “What if the most powerful thing you could do to move forward is pull back—not quit, not abandon the vision, but intentionally create enough space to see what’s actually working and what no longer deserves your energy?” “We convince ourselves that movement is momentum, but they are not the same thing. You can be moving constantly and still not be moving in the right direction. You can have a full calendar and an empty strategy.” “Creating space can save you months or even years of pursuing the wrong priorities. White space is not wasted space. White space is where we reconnect with the vision.” “Where do I need to stop pushing long enough to see clearly? Maybe you need to stop saying yes to every opportunity and determine which ones actually support the future you want.” “Sometimes we pull back because we’re afraid, but sometimes we pull back because we’re preparing to leap—and those are two completely different things.” “For every part of our business, I began placing it into one of four categories: Do we keep it, merge it, pause it, or eliminate it? Growth is not always about addition. Very often, growth requires subtraction.” “Sometimes the bravest decision is to acknowledge that something was right for a previous season, but it isn’t necessarily right for the next one. History is not always a reason to continue.” “We’re building an integrated ecosystem that supports ambitious, impact-driven women through a clear path that strengthens five areas of growth: mindset, messaging, marketing, monetization, and momentum.” “Clarity does not mean knowing every step. It means knowing the next right step and being willing to take it. ICONIC stands for Intentionally Creating Our Next Incredible Chapters—and that’s exactly what this season represents to me.” Ready to Create Clarity Around Your Next Move? If you have an idea you are ready to launch, a business or brand you want to strengthen, or a fresh direction you are ready to explore, enrollment for the next SBSC™ Collective is now open. This intentionally small, high-touch, eight-week coaching experience gives Allison the proximity to understand what you are building and help you move it forward with strategy, personalized guidance, and accountability. What do you want to be known for, and does your digital footprint actually reflect it? In this special behind-the-scenes session from the She Believed She Could Summit, Allison Walsh is joined by Heather French Henry and Brielle Cotterman for a powerful conversation about personal branding, identity, storytelling, publicity, and taking ownership of your narrative. Heather challenges you to look beyond titles, services, and accomplishments to define the character, values, and impact you want people to associate with your name. Brielle then reveals why telling that story intentionally has never been more important, especially as AI changes how people discover, research, and form opinions about individuals and brands online. From defining what you stand for to leveraging PR, earned media, podcast interviews, thought leadership, and third-party credibility, this episode will help you become more intentional about the story the world is hearing about you. How to Stop Letting Fear Keep You Stuck with Tracy Litt

What if the fear you're feeling isn't a sign to stop, but evidence that you're standing at the edge of something incredible? In this powerful conversation, Allison sits down with transformational speaker, bestselling author, and School of Becoming founder Tracy Litt to unpack why so many high-achieving women know they're ready for more but still struggle to make the leap. Tracy explains what actually happens in your brain and nervous system when you consider doing something unfamiliar, why what we call "lack of clarity" can sometimes be fear in disguise, and how to distinguish real danger from the discomfort that comes with growth. Together, Allison and Tracy share their own experiences leaving successful corporate careers, navigating uncertainty, betting on themselves, and learning to trust the women they were becoming. They also explore why sustainable transformation isn't about eliminating fear, but learning how to create enough internal safety to move forward anyway. Tracy also introduces her Choice Method, a four-part framework designed to help women build awareness, regulate their nervous systems, make decisions from their future identity, and create lasting change. If you've been feeling the pull toward something more but keep wondering, "What if it doesn't work?" this conversation may be exactly what you need to hear.
