    Acts 2: Outside of Ourselves | Weston Stutz | Captivate Church

    One of the greatest examples of community in scripture is found in our chapter of study this week: Acts 2. What we learn in this chapter is that when the Holy Spirit works in our lives He drives us outside of ourselves and toward 3 things:1. The Lord 2. The Lost 3. The Lonely So often when we look for meaning in life, happiness, purpose, and a sense of belonging, we tend to look within. We often look in the mirror and ask ourselves life's deepest questions. But what we learn in scripture is that the answers to those questions don't exist within us. They exist outside of us. And when the Holy Spirit has his way in our lives, He reveals to us that what we are looking for is found beyond us, in the Lord and other people.     Last week we kicked off our new years series "Church in the Wild" by giving an introduction of the book of Acts, what the purpose of the church is, and where we are going this year.Acts 1 gives us what is essentially the thesis statement for the church of Jesus in the known world today:"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 NIVIn this one action-packed verse we get the PURPOSE, the PLAN, and the POWER of the church. We are praying for a fresh understanding, freedom, and boldness to be the church that goes toward darkness, not away from it.     The Book of Acts is the remarkable story of how God used a group of ordinary people to catalyze the largest faith movement in the history of the world. And thus, the church began! But why did God make the church? What's its purpose? The truth is everything God makes has a purpose, and that includes us as the church. God made the church to lift up his name, end loneliness, and be the light to the world.
