Dr. Christin Glorioso: Keep The Brain Young

Dr. Christin Glorioso knows the dread many people carry about their own memory, the invisible weight of wondering what the last decade of life will look like and whether their wits will come along. She watched Alzheimer’s disease take both her grandmother and her aunt. As a physician and neuroscientist with one copy of the APOE4 gene, she explains why her research at MIT convinced her that slowing biological brain aging by five years makes Alzheimer’s six times less likely, and why she believes about half of cases are preventable even with genetic risk. She walks through the nine pillars of healthy brain aging she follows herself, from a green Mediterranean diet with duckweed smoothies to high intensity training intervals that appear to help the hippocampus, and describes how her company NeuroAge Therapeutics pairs a brain aging test with their long term goal of developing pharmaceutical drugs. Not sure where to start? Take their test and pick the pillar you are doing worst in. Build new habits to improve that pillar and go from there. Special Thanks to Our Sponsors BEAM Minerals: Plant-based liquid minerals for replenishing the foundational compounds your body needs to age well. Key Moments “So there’s this huge actionable piece which has been really empowering.”“You can grow your brain back, just like you can make your muscles bigger.”“So your parents told you video games will rot your brain. It’s actually pretty good for you.”Connect with Dr. Christin Glorioso NeuroAge Therapeutics: https://www.neuroagetx.com Younger contest: https://www.neuroagetx.com/events/younger NeuroGames: https://app.neuroagetx.com/ Substack: https://drglorioso.substack.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christin-glorioso-md-phd-39627719/ X: https://x.com/DrGlorioso NeuroAge on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/neuroage_therapeutics/ NeuroAge on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/neuroage-therapeutics/ Connect with AGEIST Newsletter: https://www.ageist.com/newsletter/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/weareageist/ Website: https://www.ageist.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/ageist Click Here for the full interview transcript. Dr. Christin Glorioso and the Case for Training Your Brain Like a Muscle Glorioso reads brain scans for a living, and she says what shows up on an MRI tends to mirror what a person neglects. A shrinking cerebellum, the balance center at the back of the brain, usually points to someone who rarely does anything that challenges their balance. A hippocampus that is losing volume faster than expected, the memory region hit hardest by Alzheimer’s disease, responds to high intensity intervals. Her recommendation is two interval sessions a week, with the Norwegian four by four as the classic template: four minutes at roughly 80 to 90 percent of maximum heart rate, three minutes of easy effort, repeated four times. She cites a randomized trial in which balance training enlarged the cerebellum, and she reports that her own hippocampus has grown slightly over the past year and a half. Reaction Time, Video Games, and Mental Effort The mental activity pillar offers some unexpected advice. Glorioso points to a ten year randomized trial in which a game that trains reaction speed lowered later dementia risk by about 30 percent, and she plays a similar game for ten minutes a day. She adds that large cohorts such as the UK Biobank show roughly 20 percent less dementia risk among people who play more video games, and that pickleball or ping pong can train the same quick responses. The common thread is difficulty. Time on a hobby counts only when it demands real effort rather than autopilot. The Overlooked Link Between Heart and Brain Glorioso also explains why cardiovascular health belongs in any conversation about memory. Vascular dementia, the second most common form after Alzheimer’s, comes from small blockages that cause tiny strokes in the brain, and the two conditions often overlap. Her own APOE4 variant affects how cholesterol is transported, which gave her borderline high cholesterol even as a college tennis player. She now takes a statin, and she tells listeners that anyone who needs one should not leave it untreated. Choosing Where to Start For anyone overwhelmed by nine pillars, she suggests a four minute lifestyle quiz on the NeuroAge site and then working on the area where you score lowest. Habits make the rest easier, she says, which is why her Monday evening exercise class never requires a decision. She once tracked her daily list on a wall calendar with shiny stickers, covering the duckweed smoothie, twenty minutes of sunshine, and an hour of exercise, and she says the sum of those small tweaks matters more than any single one. Caroline Alan: The Longevity Role of Minerals

Caroline Alan spent years hearing from practitioners that her exhaustion, insomnia, and inflammation were simply part of getting older, until a cup of dark liquid from her future business partner led her to ask whether aging and depletion might be the same thing. In this conversation, the co-founder and CEO of BEAM Minerals and author of The Mineral Reset explains why she believes generations of farming have left soil unable to return minerals to our food, and why humic and fulvic minerals, which come from decomposed ancient rainforests, work in a way a shelf of eighteen separate pills cannot. She also lays out how minerals fuel the mitochondria in every cell, why their number and activity decline with age, and why she considers mineral balance as important as quantity. Listeners will hear her timeline for when people tend to notice changes in energy, recovery, and sleep, along with the symptoms she says are easy to overlook. Special Thanks to Our Sponsor BEAM Minerals: Plant-based liquid minerals for replenishing the foundational compounds your body needs to age well. Key Moments “We’ve been treating our soils like a bad bank account where we just keep taking money out, withdrawal, withdrawal, withdrawal, and our soils are depleted.” “You’ve got all these symptoms, and the symptoms are like boats on the sand. And when the tide comes in, they all raise off the sand at the same time.” “My light bulb just burns brighter now. Dr. Jeffrey Bland: An Ancient Grain He Found By Accident

Dr. Jeffrey Bland, 80, draws a sharp line between being elderly and being an elder: one has lost function and become dependent, the other stays wise, capable, and still contributing to the people around them. In this conversation, Dr. Bland explains why he's built his current company, Big Bold Health, around the immune system, since it's the one system embedded in every tissue in the body and central to how we age at the cellular level. The researcher credited with coining the term functional medicine back in 1990 shares results from an 800-person clinical trial on Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat. An ancient Chinese grain his team stumbled into almost by accident, this superfood improved cognitive performance by 27 percent in just 90 days by reprogramming the epigenetic markers on immune cells. Listeners will come away with a clearer picture of how diet, environment, and daily habits can switch specific genes on or off, and why the goal of longevity isn't just more years, but more years spent as the version of yourself still capable of contributing. Paul Coletta on Why You're Only As Healthy as Your Oldest Organ

Paul Coletta isn’t a doctor or a scientist, which he says is exactly why he can explain proteomics in three sentences, not a confusing research paper. In this conversation, the founder of Vero Bioscience walks through what a single vial of blood can reveal about the biological age of eleven different organs. He discusses technology built in Stanford neuroscientist Tony Wyss-Coray’s lab and just spotlighted in TIME’s 2026 Longevity Leaders issue and why his own test came back showing a kidney seven years older than the rest of him–a signal his traditional labs had missed entirely. He makes the case that a single biological age number is the wrong place to stop, since averaging your organs together hides exactly the risk you’d want to catch early. Listeners will hear how Coletta has spent two years running his own N-of-1 experiment in response, adjusting his sleep, light exposure, and supplements, and what it actually takes to turn a prediction into a measurable, reversible result. James Park on Building for the Caregiver Nobody Sees

Nearly two decades after co-founding Fitbit and putting personal health tracking on people's wrists, James Park has turned his attention to a harder problem: the invisible mental load carried by roughly one in four American adults now caring for an aging family member. In this conversation, he explains how Luffu, his new AI-powered platform, turns scattered observations, a doctor's note, a missed pill, a change in sleep, into a shared model a family can actually act on, without requiring the aging parent to hand over their privacy in the process.  He talks candidly about the tension at the center of caregiving technology: the caregiver wants to know everything out of anxiety, while the person receiving care simply wants the dignity of an autonomous life, and he explains how Luffu is designed to please both sides. Listeners will come away with a clearer sense of what caregiving actually costs beyond the hours logged, and what it might look like to finally put some of that mental weight into a system instead of carrying it alone. Dr. Stacy Sims Is Leading a Team at the Super Age Games

We're revisiting a fan favorite this week: our September 2024 conversation with Dr. Stacy Sims, the exercise physiologist behind one of the most useful ideas in women's fitness: women are not small men, and their training shouldn't be built as if they were. We're getting excited because Dr. Sims is preparing to join us at the Super Age Games this November, and can’t wait to celebrate women in sports, science, and longevity alongside her. In this episode, Dr. Sims breaks down why women over 40 need to emphasize heavy lifting and high-intensity intervals, and why perimenopause is the pivot point that changes almost everything about how a woman's body responds to exercise. "For women over 40, lifting heavy isn't optional—it's essential for maintaining lean mass and bone density." "Women are already metabolically flexible. High-intensity is where the real gains are." Dr. Elizabeth Yurth on Replacing What the Body Stops Making

After twenty five years as a traditional orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Elizabeth Yurth walked away from a specialty she says patches the body instead of heals it. This was a shift that eventually led her to found the Boulder Longevity Institute. In this conversation, she explains why a common knee surgery called arthroscopic debridement has been abandoned in most countries, and why cheap, decades-old lab values like creatinine and ALT are routinely misread by doctors who are misinformed on these measures. She also makes the case for treating peptides the same way we treat hormones: as naturally occurring compounds the body simply stops producing with age, not a bodybuilding shortcut or a biohacking fad. Dr. Yurth leaves listeners with a clearer, more skeptical eye for what is being marketed to them, and a working definition of healthy aging that shifts the focus from simply a lab report. Denise Kirtley: Stop Chasing Your Thirties

We're bringing back our May 2025 conversation with Denise Kirtley, the founder of Rebellion Body. As we look back on this message, Kirtley is preparing to head to the Super Age Games with the event's largest team yet, more than 50 women strong. Kirtley built her coaching business on the idea that midlife is not a decline to manage, but a version of life women get to design on purpose. In this conversation, she explains why belief, not willpower, is usually the first thing that has to change before a body does. She also gets into the backlash she receives for posting bikini photos in her fifties, her wariness about AI-generated bodies flooding social media, and why she thinks the phrase "50 is the new 30" gets the whole conversation backward. Listeners will come away with an answer to the question that stalls most people before they ever begin: what do you do on the days you don't feel motivated at all?
