We also preview the upcoming Jewish Women Changing the World panel and the HER Tel Aviv Festival. U.S. Strikes Iran Now that MOU is Out & Israel Daily News: Mon, Aug 31, 2026 Ep. 875

The 60-day U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding has expired — and the United States is taking military action. In today's episode of the Israel Daily News Podcast, Shana Fuld breaks down the latest escalation after American forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, following reports that the IRGC was preparing to target shipping lanes. Iran is now threatening to respond. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively shut for business and Iran's economy under growing pressure, what comes next for the U.S., Iran, Israel, and the wider region? Shana also examines the growing political battle inside Israel ahead of the October 27th election, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's concerns over Ofer Winter's new People of Israel party and the latest polling showing Netanyahu's coalition below the 61-seat threshold needed to form a government. The episode also covers growing tensions over Haredi military service after 16 Givati Brigade soldiers refused to board an armored vehicle because a female paramedic was onboard, the ongoing debate over religious accommodations in the IDF, and the political battle over Haredi enlistment. Shana marks two years since the IDF recovered the bodies of six hostages murdered by Hamas: Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Carmel Gat, Ori Danino, Alex Lubnov, and Almog Sarusi. She reflects on their lives, their families, and the impact their deaths had on Israel and the world. The episode also examines rising settler violence in the West Bank, concerns raised by senior IDF officials about Palestinian retaliation, the controversy surrounding Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, and the vandalism of a Reform synagogue in Jerusalem. And on a more positive note, Israel has scored another major achievement in the defense industry, signing its largest-ever defense export deal — a $3.5 billion agreement with Greece for a comprehensive missile-defense system known as the "Achilles Shield." Dolly Parton’s Library Idea Reaches Israel & Israel Daily News; Thu. Aug 27, 2026

An IDF social media video appeared to advise ultra-Orthodox Israelis facing military draft enforcement on how to avoid arrest at Ben Gurion Airport — and it was quickly deleted. In this episode of Israel Daily News, Shanna Fuld breaks down the controversy surrounding the now-deleted IDF video ahead of the annual Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine.  The video reportedly used an AI character called “Dudy the Explainer” to explain how draft evaders could avoid being detained at the airport. The controversy comes as Israel's long-running battle over Haredi military service intensifies and new legislation has left some pilgrimage-bound Israelis facing draft-evader status.  Shanna also examines the growing security tensions in Judea and Samaria, including the strategic significance of the proposed E1 settlement expansion, British pressure over Israeli settlements, and warnings about settler violence.  Meanwhile, election season is heating up. Gadi Eisenkot is calling a two-state solution “delusional” following October 7th while simultaneously criticizing the E1 expansion as a strategic mistake. He also takes aim at Ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir over settler violence.  The episode also looks back at the 2014 Gaza war, including reports of secret direct back-channel contacts between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas through intermediary Shlomi Fogel — contacts that Netanyahu's office and Fogel have denied.  Plus, Shanna speaks about Tal Goldstein-Almog, a young survivor of Hamas captivity, and highlights his interview with Australian journalist Erin Molan. And in a cultural tribute, Shanna remembers Dolly Parton and the extraordinary impact of her Imagination Library, including its connection to PJ Library and Israel's Sifriyat Pijama program. The episode also remembers Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, including her acclaimed 2021 exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.  Finally, Rabbi Yossi Madvig explores this week's Torah portion, Ki Tavo, discussing light and darkness, the Messianic era, and the difference between the afterlife and the “world to come.” In this episode:  • The controversial IDF video for draft evaders  • Why the IDF deleted the video  • The Haredi military draft crisis  • The Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage to Uman  • Airport enforcement and draft evaders  • Rising tensions in Judea and Samaria  • The E1 settlement expansion plan  • British pressure over Israeli settlements  • Gadi Eisenkot's election campaign  • Israel's upcoming elections  • IDF operations against October 7th attackers  • Tal Goldstein-Almog and his experience in captivity • Reports of secret Netanyahu-Hamas contacts in 2014  • Israel Daily News' independent journalism  • Rosh Hashanah gifts from Israeli artists  • Dolly Parton's global legacy and PJ Library  • Yayoi Kusama's legacy in Israel  • Torah thought with Rabbi Yossi Madvig Support independent journalism: Israel Daily News is independently produced and does not work for the Israeli government. Trump’s ‘Economic D-Day’ Slams Iran as the Rial Craters; Shin Bet Chief Defends Denying Eisenkot a Security Detail; Settlers Allegedly Beat Elderly West Bank Amputee

Iran’s 60-day window with the United States has expired — and there is still no diplomatic breakthrough. In today's Israel Daily News, Shana Fuld breaks down the latest developments across Israel, Iran, and the region, including reports that Tehran used the 60-day period to expand missile and drone production and strengthen coordination with its proxy forces in Yemen, Iraq, and Lebanon. The Trump administration is now pushing what it calls an “economic D-Day” against Iran, targeting the country's oil exports, banking system, and foreign trade networks. Iran's currency has fallen to a record low, while tensions continue to rise across the region. Meanwhile, Israel's domestic political battle is intensifying ahead of the October 27 election. Ultra-Orthodox protesters blocked Highway 4 near Bnei Brak following the arrest of a yeshiva student who failed to report for his IDF draft summons. The Haredi draft exemption debate has become one of the defining political issues in Israel, with coalition parties pushing new legislation while critics argue that all Israelis should share the burden of military service. Shana also breaks down Netanyahu's warning to right-wing voters about smaller parties potentially failing to cross the electoral threshold — and why reaching 61 seats is so important for forming a government. Plus, a major historical discovery: Divers have located the wreck of the Altalena, the ship at the center of one of the most painful episodes in Israel's early history. The ship, carrying weapons, fighters, and immigrants, arrived in Israel in 1948 and became the center of a confrontation between David Ben-Gurion's government and Menachem Begin's Irgun. When the IDF opened fire on the ship, Begin ordered his fighters not to retaliate in order to prevent a civil war. Now, decades later, the wreck has been located intact roughly 500 meters underwater off the coast of Tel Aviv. In this episode: • Iran's 60-day U.S. memorandum expires • Trump's new “economic D-Day” sanctions campaign • Iran's collapsing currency • Rising tensions near Saudi Arabia • Israel's Haredi military draft crisis • The fight over new draft exemption legislation • Netanyahu's warning to right-wing voters • Shin Bet chief David Zini and Gadi Eisenkot • Settler violence in the West Bank • International stabilization plans for Gaza • Mansour Abbas and Palestinian statehood • The discovery of the Altalena wreck • Ben-Gurion vs. Menachem Begin • How the Altalena nearly triggered civil war • Israel Daily News updates and how to support independent journalism • The Maccabiah Games and the “Jewish Olympics” Support Israel Daily News: Your support helps us continue producing independent journalism about Israel and the Middle East.
