The credit union member age gap no one's fixing, with Nick Wodogaza.

In the latest episode of the Digital Banking Podcast, host Josh DeTar welcomed Nick Wodogaza, credit union champion and advisor with CuS Together, and former CEO of Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union. Wodogaza spent 45 years in the credit union movement across just two employers, a state league and Palmetto Citizens, where he led for 28 years before retiring to work with credit unions full time. Wodogaza laid out a framework he used in strategic planning sessions: important issues were rarely urgent, and urgent issues were rarely important, which meant credit unions often spent their time firefighting instead of addressing the member-focused, people, and operations issues that actually determined their future. He and DeTar also discussed how generative AI had reshaped what skills credit unions needed on staff, from developers who could write custom code to subject matter experts who could simply describe a business process to an LLM, while cautioning that most institutions were still in the infancy of figuring out safe, effective use. The conversation turned to what Wodogaza called a "future closed account," a member relationship built on a single product and a competitive rate that evaporated the moment a better rate appeared elsewhere. He argued that credit unions built lasting relationships not by chasing prime borrowers or advertising rates on billboards, but by serving the members other institutions overlooked, from first-time car buyers to formerly incarcerated members rebuilding credit. Wodogaza closed by pushing back on growth for its own sake, pointing to a shrinking number of credit unions nationally and arguing that being the best for a defined group of members mattered more than getting bigger.

We're in a trust recession – AI is making it worse, with Alice Sesay Pope.

In the latest episode of theDigital Banking Podcast, host Josh DeTar of Tyfone welcomed Alice Sesay Pope, a customer experience executive and author who spent her career transforming service organizations at Capital One, Visa, USAA, and Amazon. Pope trained as a chemical engineer before moving into financial services, where she learned to pair rigorous process design with the soft skills that let frontline employees actually help people. Pope described the current moment as a "trust recession," pointing to Pew Research showing that the population using generative AI tools the most also trusted it the least. She and DeTar traced how quickly usage grew anyway, citing a TD Bank survey in which the share of consumers using AI to help with their finances jumped from 10% in 2025 to 55% in 2026. DeTar shared his own experience with SoFi repeatedly pitching him student loan refinancing despite never having attended college, an example Pope used to illustrate how disconnected data could be from an actual customer relationship. The conversation turned to what financial institutions could do about it: building an enterprise-wide view of the customer instead of operating in departmental silos, offering secure and accurate generative AI tools of their own so members did not have to hand statements to outside platforms, and knowing when a human interaction mattered more than an automated one. Pope closed by connecting the discussion back to her book, The Trust Algorithm, and her belief that institutions willing to build the right guardrails could still earn back the trust AI had put at risk.

Why your bank's biggest threat isn't another bank — it's a stablecoin, with Edwin Mata.

In this episode of the Digital Banking Podcast, host Josh DeTar sat down with Edwin Mata, CEO and Co-Founder of Brickken, to unpack one of the most misunderstood — yet most consequential — shifts in financial services: tokenization. Mata, a former M&A lawyer turned legal-tech and fintech founder, brought a unique cross-disciplinary lens to the conversation, drawing on a career spent translating between lawyers, financiers, and technologists. The two explored how tokenization is far from a fringe crypto concept, pointing to everyday examples like DocuSign, credit cards, and casino chips as proof that tokens have quietly powered commerce for decades.  The conversation moved from foundational definitions into the real-world implications for banks, fintechs, and consumers. Mata explained why blockchain-based infrastructure is enabling 24/7 settlement, global liquidity access, and dramatically lower fees — and why countries with weaker banking infrastructure (Venezuela, Argentina, and the Mexico-to-U.S. remittance corridor) adopted stablecoins long before tier-one nations took them seriously. He also unpacked why legacy banks, burdened by decades of layered tech debt, are struggling to compete with neobanks and crypto-native players who can offer integrated stablecoin and fiat experiences. The episode closed with a candid look at the U.S. regulatory landscape, including the Clarity Act, skinny master accounts, and what increased fintech access to Federal Reserve rails could mean for community banks and credit unions. Mata and DeTar agreed that while competition will compress margins and force product innovation, the institutions that lean into the new infrastructure — rather than resist it — will be the ones that remain relevant to their communities.
