    The Devil In The Dock

What happens when the Devil enters the courtroom? For centuries, that wasn't simply a theological question. There were times when courts treated Satan, demons and witchcraft as very real forces capable of corrupting bodies, destroying crops, causing death and driving human beings towards terrible acts. But as society changed, so too did the Devil — and so did the law. In this episode, we follow that extraordinary transformation through centuries of legal history. From the brutal machinery of the European witch trials and the strange familiars of English witchcraft cases, to the emergence of forensic psychiatry and the increasingly difficult question of whether someone was bad, mad... or possessed. We encounter a murderer who wrote to the Devil in his own blood, the tragic case of Anneliese Michel, the Amityville murders, the infamous claim that “the Devil made me do it”, and the Satanic Panic of the 1980s. But beneath these extraordinary cases lies a much more unsettling question. When societies put witches, demons and the Devil on trial, what were they really judging? But beneath these extraordinary cases lies a much more unsettling question. When societies put witches, demons and the Devil on trial, what were they really judging? Perhaps the Devil has never simply represented evil. Perhaps, changing shape from one century to another, he has also reflected the things we fear, the people we blame, and the explanations we reach for when human behaviour becomes almost impossible to comprehend. So tonight, the Devil is in the dock. But by the end of this conversation, we may have to ask whether he was ever really the one on trial. My Special Guest Is Naomi Ryan   Naomi Ryan is a criminal barrister and lover of all things macabre. After qualifying with a Masters in Law from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, she taught criminal law to undergraduates at St Hilda’s College Oxford and University College London before embarking on her career as a criminal barrister, where she both prosecuted and defended. She later moved into the Civil Service, where she has advised an array of senior government and legal figures on matters of constitutional, public and criminal law. She continues to work as an advisory lawyer whilst regularly giving talks about the darker side of legal history. Listener discretion: This episode contains a very short audio recording connected to the case of Anneliese Michel which some listeners may find distressing. It is included not for sensationalism, but to provide context for the difficult evidence later placed before the court. At the centre of this case was a young woman experiencing profound suffering, and that should never be forgotten. If you would prefer not to hear the recording, please skip ahead when advised.  If you value this podcast and want to enjoy more episodes please come and find us on https://www.patreon.com/Haunted_History_Chronicles to support the podcast, gain a wealth of additional exclusive podcasts, writing and other content. Where the Dead Are Never Far Away: Haunted New Orleans

What happens when a city doesn't simply remember its dead, but continues to live alongside them? In New Orleans, cemeteries are woven into the cityscape, generations of families carry stories of the unexplained, and traditions of prayer, Voodoo and ancestor veneration keep the boundary between the living and the dead remarkably close. After our previous conversation exploring the extraordinary life and afterlife of the Baroness de Pontalba, Dr Rory O'Neill Schmitt and Dr Rosary O'Neill return to take us deeper into the city surrounding her — and into their book The Haunted Guide to New Orleans. In a city where, as Rory puts it, the cityscape can become a “deathscape”, perhaps the past is never quite as distant as we imagine. This week we return to New Orleans — a city of ghosts, ancestors, memory and mystery, where the living and the dead sometimes seem to occupy the very same streets. My Special Guests are Dr Rory O’Neill Schmitt and Dr. Rosary O'Neill:    Dr Rory O’Neill Schmitt is the author of six books exploring history, culture, art, and the enduring mysteries of place. Much of her work is rooted in New Orleans, where the past is never entirely past: its houses, streets, legends, and larger-than-life figures continue to inspire stories of hauntings and restless memory. Dr Rosary O’Neill, PHD, is a senior Fulbright drama specialist and winner of nine Fulbright awards, including five to study Edgar Degas in Paris. She has published nineteen plays with Concord Publishers (Samuel French Publishers), including Degas in New Orleans and Marilyn/God, and has published six play/screenplay anthologies, three novels and seven books. She co-authored screenplays with Dr Rory Schmitt about Kate Chopin, Edgar Degas and the Baroness of Pontalba in New Orleans, and these are currently being optioned as films. Dr O’Neill is a professor emerita at Loyola University, New Orleans, and a member of the Playwrights Division of the Actors’ Studio in New York City. Blood, Betrayal and Ghosts: The Extraordinary Life of the Baroness de Pontalba

What if the most extraordinary Gothic tale wasn't fiction at all? Born into wealth in New Orleans, Micaëla de Pontalba would endure betrayal, confinement, violence and an attempt on her life — yet somehow emerge unbroken, reshaping not only her own destiny but the city she called home. Her story moves between New Orleans and an ancestral French château, through murder, family secrets and remarkable survival — and, even after death, the ghosts surrounding Micaëla and those places refuse to disappear. This week, we step into the extraordinary true story of the Baroness de Pontalba, where documented history, Gothic darkness and the supernatural become almost impossible to separate. My Special Guests are Dr Rory O’Neill Schmitt and Dr. Rosary O'Neill:    Dr Rory O’Neill Schmitt is the author of six books exploring history, culture, art, and the enduring mysteries of place. Living Magickally: Intuition, Spirits and the Paranormal with Patti Negri

What if magick isn't something supernatural at all — but something we've simply forgotten how to notice? This week, I’m joined by Patti Negri to explore intuition, spirit communication and the paranormal — from haunted places and haunted dolls to the energies we may unknowingly create ourselves. It’s a conversation about looking beyond fear, reconnecting with the intuitive and perhaps rediscovering a little of the magick modern life has taught us to leave behind. My Special Guest Is Patti Negri:    Patti Negri, widely known as the ‘Good Witch of Hollywood’, is a psychic medium, practising witch, author, teacher and television personality whose work brings together mediumship, magick and paranormal investigation. She is perhaps best known for her recurring role on Ghost Adventures, where she has appeared since 2015 as one of the team's go-to psychic mediums, working alongside Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin, Billy Tolley and Jay Wasley. She is the international bestselling author of Old World Magick for the Modern World: Tips, Tricks & Techniques to Balance, Empower & Create a Life You Love, a book centred upon bringing magick, intention and greater awareness back into everyday life. Her more recent work, Dollcraft, brings together two important strands of her world: magickal practice and the paranormal, exploring both the creation of magickal poppets and her approach to haunted dolls. Alongside her writing and television work, Patti is passionate about teaching others to develop their own intuitive abilities. Through University Magickus, she offers classes covering areas including mediumship, psychic development, spellcasting and familiars. She also hosts the award-winning podcast The Witching Hour with Patti Negri and is involved with the paranormal streaming network Paraflixx. Her extensive media career has included appearances on programmes such as MasterChef, America's Got Talent and Portals to Hell, alongside collaborations with numerous creators, broadcasters and figures from the entertainment industry. Her work has also been recognised within the paranormal community, including being named Best TV Psychic at the 2023 Parapod Awards and Best Psychic Podcast in 2024. Maurice Barbanell: The Forgotten Architect of Modern Spiritualism With Dr Nick Richbell

How does someone shape an entire movement... and yet almost disappear from history? If you've explored Spiritualism, the paranormal or psychical research, you've almost certainly encountered the legacy of Maurice Barbanell—even if you've never recognised his name. In this episode, historian Dr Nick Richbell joins me to discuss his new book, Silver Birch's Medium, and the extraordinary life of the man behind one of the most influential voices in twentieth-century Spiritualism. We explore Barbanell's remarkable journey from sceptic to believer, his role as the medium for Silver Birch, his decades editing Psychic News, his investigations into mediumship, his legal battles, and the lasting influence he had on Spiritualism in Britain and beyond. But this conversation is about much more than one historical figure. Together we ask how belief is formed, what people consider to be evidence, how personal experience shapes conviction, and why these questions remain just as relevant today. From science and religion to media, authority and public trust, Maurice Barbanell's story offers a fascinating window into the way people negotiate extraordinary claims in the modern world. My Special Guest Is Dr Nick Richbell:    Dr. Nick Richbell received his PhD in History from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His research focuses on the history of Spiritualism, and his doctoral dissertation examined the life and influence of the medium Maurice Barbanell and his spirit guide, Silver Birch. While Silver Birch's teachings continue to be discussed in Spiritualist churches today, Maurice Barbanell's significant contributions are often overlooked. Barbanell devoted more than six decades to the Spiritualist movement, and Nick’s research seeks to restore his place in history as one of the twentieth century's most influential advocates of Spiritualism. Nick recently completed his book, Silver Birch’s Medium: Maurice Barbanell & Twentieth-Century Spiritualism, scheduled for publication on September 10, 2026. Based on his doctoral research, the book expands on his dissertation with previously unpublished photographs, two new chapters, and substantial revisions incorporating newly discovered archival material. As a Spiritualist himself, Nick embraces the movement's principle of thoughtful inquiry: to question what one reads and hears, and to accept only what resonates through personal experience and reflection. Walking the Borderlands: Ghosts, Folklore and Witchcraft With Hugh Williams

There are landscapes where history never seems entirely past — where an ancient track, a ruined church, a lonely cave or a stretch of woodland can feel like a threshold between what we know and something altogether stranger. In this episode, we journey into the old borderlands of Mercia, exploring a Midlands steeped in folklore, witchcraft, ghost stories, strange encounters and centuries of belief. We discover how stories become embedded in the places where they are told, why certain landscapes seem to invite the supernatural, and what can happen when we leave the familiar path behind and begin to look at the countryside through older eyes. From forgotten traditions and the realities behind witchcraft accusations to haunted ruins, liminal places and the enduring power of local legend, this is a conversation about the magic that can still be found in the landscape — and the stories waiting there for those willing to walk into it. My Special Guest Is Hugh Williams:    Hugh Williams was born in Worcester at the heart of the Midlands of England. He has spent years exploring, discovering and researching the stranger places of the Midlands and beyond, telling their stories and musing on their magic. With four books and regular appearances on TV and radio under his belt, you can find him at the liminal space where folklore, history and the supernatural converge. Walking With Ghosts: The Presence in the Cold Spot With Ciaran Farrell

Why do some places suddenly feel unnaturally cold—and could there be more to it than a simple draught? In this episode of Haunted History Chronicles, I welcome back psychical researcher Ciaran Farrell to explore one of the most frequently reported yet least understood features of paranormal encounters: cold spots. Far more than a simple drop in temperature, Ciaran explains why investigators have long associated cold spots with feelings of dread, nausea, unease and even the sensation of an unseen presence. Drawing on decades of research, he discusses how cold spots can be investigated using both scientific methods and eyewitness testimony, and why he believes they may provide important clues in understanding hauntings, shadow figures and apparitions. The conversation also explores whether environments can retain traces of past events, and examines how investigators attempt to distinguish between naturally occurring temperature changes and genuinely anomalous phenomena. Join us as we ask a simple but fascinating question: when the temperature suddenly changes, are you feeling nothing more than the environment… or something that shouldn't be there? My Special Guest Is Ciaran Farrell:    Ciaran has served as a Council member of the Society for Psychical Research, SPR and the SPR’s Spontaneous Cases committee, SCC for many years. He has had many psychical experiences and adventures when he was a boy. This led him to formulate his own early theories about ghosts, poltergeists and telepathic veridical dreams of the dead gained through direct encounters with ghosts, spirits and poltergeists. He went on to build and design some of his own ghost-hunting equipment and to improve upon his previous theories about Cold Spots building on his own experience of them and his own ghost adventures.  He formulated the concept of ‘my body as an instrument’ to monitor and evaluate his perception of the atmospheres of rooms and outdoor places and preternatural Cold Spots within them as well as the perception and detection of poltergeists and ghost encounters.  If you value this podcast and want to enjoy more episodes please come and find us on https://www.patreon.com/Haunted_History_Chronicles to support the podcast, gain a wealth of additional exclusive podcasts, writing and other content. Dreams, Sleep Paralysis and the Paranormal With TyLean Tuijl

Why Do So Many Extraordinary Experiences Happen at Night? Last week, TyLean Tuijl challenged many of the assumptions surrounding possession, encouraging us to move beyond Hollywood stereotypes and consider a far more complex psychological, cultural and experiential picture. In this follow-up conversation, we explore another question that naturally emerged from that discussion: Why do so many reports of hauntings, apparitions, possession experiences and other extraordinary encounters seem to occur while we're asleep—or in that strange space between sleeping and waking? Together, we explore why sleep may be one of the most important gateways to extraordinary experiences. From sleep paralysis and shadow figures to vivid dreams and altered states of consciousness, we examine why these experiences have been interpreted so differently across cultures and throughout history. We discuss what the Society for Psychical Research is discovering through Project Sleep, why sleep disturbances so often appear alongside reports of hauntings, possession and other spontaneous paranormal phenomena, and why listening without judgement is essential when people come forward with these deeply personal experiences.  My Special Guest Is TyLean Tuijl:    TyLean Tuijl is a PhD researcher in psychology investigating possession and altered states of consciousness. She has a background as a solo, avant-garde composer and recording artist with many songs inspired by the paranormal, altered states of consciousness, and human psychology. She has performed on dozens of albums and on tour for various bands, most notably Attrition. She is a method-trained actress who has worked in film, television and on stage as well as voice over. Her experience with The Method became the foundation from which she would later study altered states of consciousness and possession.   TyLean is a council member and office holder for the Society for Psychical Research and a case investigator for the Spontaneous Case Committee, where she also serves as the Safeguarding Advisor.
