    Students protest Israel's genocidal war

Student protests over Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza are spreading across the United States and around the world. Students at Columbia University in New York setup a protest encampment last week on the New York campus. In response, the university’s President, Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, called in the New York Police Department and arrested several student organizers. These students were then banned from campus and may face expulsion.
If the goal was to quickly end the protest, this completely backfired on the university administration. Thousands of students, joined by faculty and staff from across the university, re-established the protest camp almost immediately. Other universities around the United States have seen solidarity camps erected and administration buildings occupied. Now, students around the world are joining the movement.
Michael Arria and I spoke to one of the student organizers from Columbia who was arrested and banned from campus. Maryam Iqbal spoke to us on Tuesday.
In the second segment, Michael reacts to Summer Lee’s primary victory in Pennsylvania and previews his new election season newsletter.

    Eyewitness accounts from al-Shifa Hospital

    Eyewitness accounts from al-Shifa Hospital

When the Israeli military left the al-Shifa Hospital complex earlier this month, Gaza’s largest medical facility was left in ruins. International medical and aid groups declared it completely destroyed and totally non-operational. Shortly after, stories began to emerge of the horrors those inside the facility experienced at the hands of the Israeli military.
Tareq Hajjaj, our Gaza Correspondent, collected eyewitness accounts of the deadly siege. He joined Yumna Patel, our Palestine News Director, to discuss the al-Shifa Hospital, as well as his reporting on what Palestinians are finding when they venture back to Gaza’s central and northern areas. Israeli forces killed several Palestinians trying to return to their homes over the past few days.

How Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah has been changed by the Gaza genocide

How Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah has been changed by the Gaza genocide

Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah was among the last group of people to enter Gaza through Egypt on the morning of Monday, October 9, immediately before the Rafah crossing was shut down and the territory was sealed off from the world.

He started operating at al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s medical epicenter, as soon as he’d arranged safe passage to the medical complex. Within the first few days, as a result of a relentless, ruthless bombing campaign against Gaza’s civilian infrastructure and people, the wounded had exceeded the entire Strip’s total bed capacity of 2,500.

He told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on October 12, 2023, that basic medical equipment was unavailable mere days into the assault. He warned of the far-ranging, catastrophic consequences of this war against the people of Gaza, “a man-made catastrophe,” he said, “almost like a perfect storm,” as Gaza’s healthcare system was “already on its knees” thanks to fifteen years of Israeli siege.

Abu-Sittah was working at Al-Ahli Hospital during the massacre on October 17, 2023, and was among the physicians who testified, surrounded by a sea of blanket-shrouded bodies, in the hospital courtyard in the attack’s immediate aftermath.

Since leaving Gaza in November, Abu-Sittah has committed his days to fighting what he called the “killing machine masquerading as a state” set on extinguishing life in Gaza. Recently, he launched the Ghassan Abu-Sittah Children’s Fund to bring injured children from Gaza to Lebanon to receive holistic medical and psychosocial care.

Mary Turfah, a writer and medical student, spoke to Dr. Abu Sittah on February 20. They talked about the liberatory potential of medicine and the complicity of Western media in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

They discussed Zionism and what to make of a settler colonial ideology that has flung itself over the precipice of genocide, necropolitics, and the obligation, when confronted with the cold, monstrous logic of elimination, to remain unwavering in our commitment to life.

U.N. experts say “Israel has been intentionally starving” Gaza

U.N. experts say “Israel has been intentionally starving” Gaza

In mid-December 2023, two and a half months into Israel’s war on Gaza, a UN-affiliated committee of famine experts reported that over half a million Gazans faced catastrophic hunger, all 2.3 million were in crisis, and the situation was “deteriorating rapidly.”

On the eve of the Famine Review Committee’s follow-up assessment, forced starvation in Gaza is getting worse, fast.

In a March 5 statement, seven UN experts declared that “Israel has been intentionally starving” Gaza and that “widespread famine” in the besieged, brutalized enclave is “imminent.”

According to Gaza health officials and a “senior doctor,” cited on March 8 by the Associated Press, at least 20 people have died from dehydration and malnutrition at north Gaza’s Kamal Adwan and al-Shifa hospitals, and sixteen premature babies have succumbed to “malnutrition-related” disorders at Rafah’s Emirati Hospital.

On March 10, Al Jazeera reported 25 “known starvation deaths” in northern Gaza.

David Kattenburg spoke with the first author of the statement, Michael Fakhri, Special UN Rapporteur on the right to food.

Girl Scouts tells troop to shut down Gaza fundraiser

Girl Scouts tells troop to shut down Gaza fundraiser

A Girl Scout Troop in Missouri recently broke away from the organization after it made legal threats against the group.

For the Girl Scout's “Agents of Change” capstone project, a St. Louis county troop decided to make and sell bracelets to raise money for children in Gaza.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri said the move was “political" and instructed them to shut down the fundraiser.

The children in this particular troop were inspired by other troops that raised money for war victims in Ukraine. Those troops faced no repercussions over their fundraisers.

Despite breaking away from the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, the group is staying together, and their bracelet campaign has continued.

Mondoweiss’s U.S. Correspondent Michael Arria spoke with Girl Scout Troop Leader and mother to one of the scouts, Nawal Abuhamdeh, and two of the Girl Scouts about the situation.
