The Embodied Vessel Podcast

Loren Lewis Cole

Podcast hosted by artist Loren Lewis Cole exploring themes around the vital necessity of artistic practice throughout the stages of our lives. From the conversation on depression and the 'meaning crisis', to our desire to dance a dance that only we can dance, the importance of creativity, curiosity and play are more important than they've been for some time. As we approach an age of increasing technological enmeshment and disembodied information hoarding, craft and the dexterous skillsets allow us to glimpse an ancient kinaesthetic intelligence that can completely revitalise our lives.  How can we go from a performative mode of engagement with the world to a participatory one? Living from the inside out, sharing what we've come here to share. Art is medicine. We create art to heal, we heal to create Art.  @lorenlewiscolejewellery www.lorenlewiscole.com Gorgeous cover image by @raynjermain , Ben Rayner

45 - Artistic practice // Spiritual Practice; Unmixed Attention is Prayer.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast You can read more about the Embodied Artist Course here. We start on October 26th. https://www.lorenlewiscole.com/pages/the-embodied-artist I've been reading the work of mystic Simone Wiel this weekend. She writes profusely about the weight of attention on our spiritual experience. “Attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer. It presupposes faith and love. Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer.” I can't put down this idea of 'unmixed' attention. As a person with an interest driven brain that our strange culture calls ADHD, I find myself battling with my multi layered attentional networks every moment. The only rest I experience is after I've done intense exercise, am in some kind of intensely stimulating, slightly dangerous experience, with my darling son, or making my work. Mostly, in the day to day, I have to will myself to stay with things that bore me. Most of what people call life bores me.  I don't care what some person I've never met thinks about something I've never done, or politics, or anything that I can't actually feel in my body. I often feel the weight of my challenging brain and my inability not to do things I desire to do. It actually hurts my body not to do something I desire to do or create. It also feels painful to be bored and in any environment I find predictable and boring. It's a challenge, if you are on any spectrum you'll get me entirely. Yet, I also have this incredible gift called hyper focus. it feels like a portal to another dimension where the holy lives, and I get to converse with this holy.  The place I've most found myself in this pure state of attention my entire life is in creative play. Using my hands, working things out. it's a dimension that exists with different laws, I don't get tired even if I don't have sufficient sleep. Last night I was observing my energy and lightness in my body at 10PM after a whole day in the studio, working on things that make me squeal with delight.  It is focus that keeps the channel open. Diluted focus makes my brain hurt, and not being able to focus makes me feel dizzy, and bad about myself, fractured and disconnected, as if I can't catch the pulse I need to and organise my energy in my body. In this way, I wholeheartedly agree with Wiel. Our undiluted attention is sacred, and it is prayer. Art is prayer and it is gratitude. Prayer is not to get what we want, it's actually to give thanks for this life by praising being a human being.  This undiluted attention redirects the energy of worry into beauty and hope, and it's what human beings have been doing for hundreds of thousands of years.  I hope you can nurture the sacred place in you where your attention becomes prayer. That is the place to follow, to take seriously. We have been given clues in this life, and the place we naturally pay the deepest and most subtle, absorbing of attention, is the place where the holy lives in you.  In this way, artistic practice is prayer.

44- What 'click bait' culture does to our ability to learn, and build beauty over time.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast How do we make peace with the effort it takes to truly build beauty, meaning, a world we can actually live in with our senses, our bodies, our relationships, in a culture that seems to relentlessly insist on making our points more succinct, our paragraphs more reduced, and our results achieved by constant 'quantum leaping'? My worldview is formed through craft, not through trends in internet thinking. My mind tends to follow my body, and the challenges I put to my dexterity. Through leaning complex skills over time. Metalwork, yoga practice, Brazilian Jui Jitsu, complex movement patterns, parenting, communication, articulation. All are a craft, none are achieved competence in through wanting to be an expert. The only path is to get involved, get sweaty, and to do the work.  I'm so honoured to be able to call myself a craftswomen. Truly, craft has taught me most of what is valuable in this life, and has allowed me to extend being an open minded student into other disciplines I want to learn.  We can put ourselves through study in our lives, we don't have to lament what we didn't get as children or in education. I continue to be a student of movement, craft and so many things that have no specific categorisation as the skills are so non impressive, but I love them.  I hope you have things you're learning in your life that you can apply yourself to over time, always feel humbled by, and developing as a skilled human being, trying their best to create and contribute a beauty others might benefit from too.  You can read more about the Embodied Artist Course here. 38 - I've been Feeling a Soul Sickness Lately.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Join the Art is Medicine Challenge - August 1-31st - Undomesticate your Creativity and give your emotion somewhere to go, it's £33 and the link is below ❤️‍🔥 https://lorenlewiscole.lpages.co/art-is-medicine-challenge/ I've been feeling a real sense of soul sickness recently, tears, overwhelm, a longing to return to my deepest knowing and to find myself back in a sense of awe and mystery. I've been yearning for surrender into the unknown, to be held by forces outside of my mind, I've been longing for the serenity and fire of artistic embodiment.  This isn't about results, about competence, skill or anything externally validated, this is about returning to our deepest intelligence in a world that wants us so disembodied and distracted.  Art is medicine, Beauty is MEDICINE. A felt sense of inner resource and beauty, not an externally validated idea of externalised and normalised beauty that ingrain western beauty standards. This beauty is the deepest truth of our authenticity and the courage to embody everything the body can feel without seeing some emotional experiences as good and some as bad. that is courage, that is beauty, and our Art can take it all, and asks for more.  I have been feeling soul sick, I needed a space to deeply feel everything. Then, the last week, I created space to return home. I set up some materials in a low key way and I went into the most amazing portal of remembering. Art is medicine. There's no shame in forgetting, it simply makes the remembrance sweeter.  Join me and a community of deep feeling women for the month of August, to create space to re-centre our fire and creativity, giving feelings somewhere to go, to express, to be alchemised into pleasure and wisdom.  This is without a doubt the place I've yearned for my entire life and I cannot wait to see what unfolds here. Please share this episode and challenge with anyone who would benefit from this medicine. With love,  Loren
