225: EVERYTHING You Need to Know About Tomatoes

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review Frank Hyman returns to the Flora Funga Podcast to dive into his newest book, Ripe Tomato Revolution, a playful and practical guide that uses tomatoes as the gateway into gardening, self-reliance, and finding your calling. Known for How to Forage for Mushrooms Without Dying, Frank brings his signature mix of humor, science, storytelling, and hands-on experience to everything from growing and transplanting tomatoes to drip irrigation, trellising, rain protection, pest management, heirlooms, hybrids, and why healthy gardens depend on working with beneficial insects instead of spraying everything in sight. Along the way, he shares stories from his unconventional path as a “successful college dropout,” reflections on mastering multiple callings, and practical wisdom from decades of farming, carpentry, writing, and gardening. This episode also wanders into wonderfully weird territory, including tomato-tobacco grafting, the possibility of “nicotine tomatoes,” Everglade tomatoes on Naked and Afraid, and why the humble tomato can teach us so much about plants, people, purpose, and resilience. 224: Stop Guessing-- This Map Predicts Mushroom Hotspots

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review Tyler Hacking returns to talk about his new mushroom map guides and the GIS technology behind them. Tyler explains how his scientific background in mycology and geospatial analysis led him to create predictive mushroom maps using tools like ArcGIS Pro. Instead of simply copying public mushroom sightings, his process layers historical collection data with habitat factors such as tree associations, water, fire history, elevation, soil, slope, aspect, and other ecological parameters to predict where mushrooms are most likely to grow. He focuses especially on morels, but also discusses other edible mushrooms like chicken of the woods, oyster mushrooms, pheasant back, and porcini. Tyler walks through how the guides are built state by state, with current maps including places like California, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin in progress. Each guide includes multiple high-resolution maps and hundreds of specific GPS coordinates designed to help foragers save time, gas, and frustration by getting closer to likely mushroom habitat. He also emphasizes that the maps are meant to support responsible mushroom hunting, including ethical harvesting practices, proper identification, and sustainable foraging. The conversation also touches on fire morels, the limits of public databases, customer feedback, affiliate opportunities, donations to mycological societies, and Tyler’s future plans for commercial, medicinal, and nutraceutical mushroom mapping.  All resources mentioned on florafungapodcast.com Today’s episode is supported by Schedule 35. 223: Can We Hear What Plants Are Feeling? Featuring the Master Plants Orchestra

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review I sit down with Tritone to explore the world of plant biosonification and the concept behind Master Plants Orchestra, an orchestra played entirely by plants. Using electrodes placed on plant leaves, Tritone converts bioelectric signals from up to eight plants into musical notes, creating soundscapes that range from calming meditation music to experimental compositions that challenge traditional human ideas of melody and scale. The conversation dives into how plant electrophysiology changes with species, water, light, and environmental conditions, and how those subtle shifts can be translated into sound. Tritone also shares the history of plant music, from early experiments in the Italian spiritual community of Damanhur to modern open-source tools being developed with Fatty Recording Co. The episode expands beyond music into education, science, AI, mushroom biosonification, and the deeper question of how technology can help humans reconnect with the natural world by listening more closely to plants, fungi, and the hidden electrical conversations happening all around us.  All resources found on florafungapodcast.com/223 Today’s episode is supported by Schedule 35. 220: How to Make Traditional Delicious Mead with DnD Meadery

Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review KK sits down with Derek of D&D Meadery to explore the ancient, flavorful, and surprisingly approachable world of mead-making. Derek shares how mead, often considered the oldest fermented beverage, begins with the simple combination of honey, water, and yeast, but becomes deeply complex through fermentation, yeast selection, local honey sources, seasonal variation, and careful quality control. Together, KK and Derek discuss the history of mead, from its ritual and celebratory roots to its reputation as a drink once reserved for nobility, while also breaking down the modern process of creating traditional honey wine. Derek walks through the importance of using high-quality raw honey, clean water, sanitation, and thoughtful fermentation practices, while explaining how different ingredients can shape the final flavor. The conversation touches on fruit meads, maple meads, dry and sweet styles, back-sweetening, stabilizing, and the creative possibilities of pairing honey with ingredients like coffee, cacao, and buckwheat honey. Derek also shares the story behind D&D Meadery’s German family crest, their award-winning traditional mead, and their growing wholesale presence across Northeast Ohio. From ancient fermentation to modern meadery expansion, this episode is a warm and educational introduction to the craft, culture, and creativity behind making mead -------------------------------------------------- Today’s episode is supported by Schedule 35. Ask Flora Funga Podcast anything OR Leave a Review This episode was such a fun, open-minded wander through fungi, philosophy, psychedelics, podcasting, and the weird little threads that connect us all. KK sat down with Joel and Jacob from The Open Minded Podcast to talk about their journey as curious young hosts exploring psychology, religion, consciousness, and the big questions of life. The conversation drifted into mushrooms, plant medicine, psychedelic experiences, ego, perception, and how these moments can change the way we see ourselves and the world around us. They also dug into what mushroom culture looks like in the UK compared to the U.S., touching on stigma, underground communities, and how normalized alcohol is while fungi still gets side-eyed. It was a thoughtful, funny, and curiosity-filled chat about growth, awareness, and staying open to the mystery.  Open Minded Podcast Today’s episode is supported by Schedule 35.
