Inappropriate Work Talk with Stephanie Lexis of the Broadway Body Positivity Project

Inappropriate Work Talk with Stephanie Lexis of the Broadway Body Positivity Project

Abby somehow manages not to do another intro segment on Euphoria (after last night's episode?? It was HARD!), and instead talks about her least favorite fat trope, the Sad Tragic Fat Girl (In Unrequited Love), or the tragic fat girl for short. Then Stephanie Lexis, an actress/singer-songwriter/comedian/advocate for body diversity in theatre comes on the podcast to discuss positive body image vs. body positivity, Never Have I Ever (the Netflix show not the game), diabetes, recovering from binge eating disorder, college dance program weigh-ins, Disney princesses, and why she actually likes Insatiable.

***This episode contains significant discussions of eating disorders, including bingeing and extreme restrictive behaviors. The BED talk is peppered throughout the episode, but to skip the restriction part, skip forward a few minutes after the question about college dance program weigh-ins.***

Stalky & Dumpy with Hayley Raphael

Stalky & Dumpy with Hayley Raphael

Happy Holidays!! This week, Abby goes on her longest intro-rant EVER about the famous fat icon Santa Claus and how his belly came to shake like a bowl full of jelly. Then actor and comedy writer Hayley Raphael comes on to discuss weight fluctuations, working at Equinox, the term "midsize," Beanie Feldstein, fatphobia in Jewish communities, and being fatshamed by Disney.

***This episode contains lots of size and weight numbers, stigmatizing language (quotes from a fatphobic article in the intro), many f***s, and a brief mention of Santa's penis. If that wasn't enough reasons not to play this in front of your children, please note that Abby also loudly and repeatedly says that Santa isn't real.***

The Inclusive Future of Fashion with Gianluca Russo

Abby explores why certain roles in theatre are coded as fat and often get played by fat actors even though there's no mention of size in the script. Then she is joined by Gianluca Russo, a fashion journalist and author of the upcoming book The Power of Plus. Abby and Gianluca talk about body positivity, breaking into journalism, Ashley Graham, Martha from High School Musical, the recent explosion of fat representation in fashion, and how theatre can follow suit.

hello_carol_ ,

One single episode changed my life!!!!!

Abby is so thoughtful, articulate and RELATABLE. I listened to the most recent episode on a mini road trip today and I was baffled by how Abby was able to string so many of my recent internal struggles into such perfect sentences. She is candid and doesn’t shy away from the realities of confronting her own complex relationship with her body and the world it inhabits.

Important perspective that should be increasingly elevated

Abby and her guests have opened my mind to how fat phobic and exclusive so much of the world is, particularly in theater and in entertainment. It shouldn’t be solely on fat folks to do this work to make the rest of us aware of their experiences, but I’m really grateful to Abby for creating this space and sharing her stories and those of her guests.

One of the best

This is one of the best podcasts out there for this subject. Abby’s fun and informational approach brings in lots of aspects of the Arts and Fat Representation in a really professional manner. Every episode is great listen and truly good stuff!
