Introducing: The Coast That Shaped the World

Introducing: The Coast That Shaped the World

If you love stories about the Scottish coast, The Coast That Shaped The World is an app full of audio stories that I think you might enjoy!

The Coast that Shaped the World, or simply Coast, is a gathering of stories reflecting and celebrating the people, communities, heritage, culture and environment of the west coast and islands of Scotland.

More than 30 local story gatherers spent a good part of the pandemic to collect over 1,300 stories about a great variety of coastal subjects. The aim of the project was to get local communities involved in telling their own stories, and to allow those of us who are interested in listening to learn about lesser-known areas, the characters who inhabit them and parts of history that are that don’t always get the attention they deserve.

The app features many of the stories that were collected, some background about the storytellers who donated them and a map to help you connect the stories to their place of origin. But the part that I’m most excited about is the audio section of the app where you can listen to recordings of stories from all over the west coast.

This episode features five of my favourite stories from the app.
The Coast That Shapes the World app is available on the App Store and on Google Play and is completely free of charge.

Listen to my stories that I mentioned in the episode:
Lullaby (Isle of Tiree)Of Stacks & Stones (Isle of Canna)Day and Night (Isle of Coll)Wild Isle (Isle of Mull)In Tune (Galloway Coast)Never The Same (Oban & Fort William)This episode was created in partnership with The Coast That Shaped the World, a project of the University of Highlands and Islands.

Kathi Kamleitner on Snorkelling and Creative Storytelling on Wild For Scotland

Kathi Kamleitner on Snorkelling and Creative Storytelling on Wild For Scotland

Listeners of Wild for Scotland know Kathi Kamleitner as the writer and host of the show. Long-time listeners might even know her as the creator of the Scotland travel blog Watch Me See. But in this conversation with Wild for Scotland co-producer and sound designer Fran Turauskis, Kathi shares more about what brought her to Scotland, her creative process and her time at the Snorkelling Artist Residency hosted by the Argyll Hope Spot.

We recommend listening to last week's episode 'Creature of the Sea' as we'll refer to it multiple times throughout this episode.

The story in the middle of this episode is an excerpt of 'Step by Step' (Season 2, Episode 8).

Outstanding!

Having been to Scotland many times from the States, I have had the opportunity to see various regions of this gem of a country. But this podcast has given me many reasons to keep going back and great ideas for when I get there. Very evocative, well-written and researched. I’ve made this podcast one of my favorites.

Exactly like I want to travel, and get to do from time to time!!!

Kathi seems to capture all that we love about travel, especially slow travel. We’ve been to Scotland for an extended stay (4 weeks) but want to visit again for the entire summer! (Coming from Florida). Kathi captures what we also love about her adopted new home. Great observations and super produced PodCast!

Storytime for those who love Scotland

It’s like story hour for travel-loving adults in and outside Scotland [who love Scotland] but could be fun for a whole family as well since there’s no bad language. I love the natural sounds of nature and water included to compliment Kathi’s voice! I think even if you’re not already a Scotland fan you’d still love it. Might help you fall in love with the country. I can’t imagine how anyone wouldn’t love this podcast unless you just don’t enjoy podcasts. It’s very narrative and that makes it unusual amongst travel podcasts.
