Eisenhower signed the Alaska Statehood Act into law. This monumental legislation paved the way for Alaska to officially be admitted as the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959, culminating decades of advocacy by territorial leaders - The push for statehood had long been championed by key political figures, notably Delegate E.L. "Bob" Bartlett, Governor Ernest Gruening, and future Governor Bill Egan. President Eisenhower signed the act without fanfare, simply stating, "Well, that's 49". The Hudson's Bay Company subsequently renamed the outpost Fort Stikine, 1924: The U.S. Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act, granting American citizenship to all Native Americans born within the U.S. This had a profound impact on Alaska Native populations, extending their voting rights while recognizing their sovereign tribal affiliations, 1974: KISS performed at the Sundowner Drive-In Theater in Anchorage.
