Eisenhower signed the Alaska Statehood Act into law. This monumental legislation paved the way for Alaska to officially be admitted as the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959, culminating decades of advocacy by territorial leaders - The push for statehood had long been championed by key political figures, notably Delegate E.L. "Bob" Bartlett, Governor Ernest Gruening, and future Governor Bill Egan. President Eisenhower signed the act without fanfare, simply stating, "Well, that's 49".
