    Zack Kaplan Interview - Kill All Immortals

    Zack Kaplan returns to the podcast and we have a lot to discuss. The 3rd season (yes, Zack uses seasons rather than volumes) of Kill All Immortals starts with issue 1 on October 7th. Frey and her fractured family are up against a bunch of newly introduced immortals and thinks get bloody fast. The Smart Division issue 2 is out September 30th. According to Dark Horse this series is, "A dark and modern sci-fi detective series set five minutes in the future. When a mysterious new predictive artificial intelligence program appears responsible for assisting someone in the perfect murder, a pair of unlikely investigators, a chaotic Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent, must hunt down the killer by starting the FBI’s first AI crimes division." Only the Save are Left 4 is also out October 7th. In this penultimate issue: "While at odds with his depraved mentor, Ryder must escape deadly marauders, a horde of monsters, and total mayhem. Kenny and Tyrell discuss whether they consider this a sequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula, what sets their story apart from other vampire stories, and why giving Dracula back his humanity makes for a more interesting, more complex tale.     Darcy Van Poelgeest talks Doom Patrol, The Karman Blade, and The Cutting Garden

    Comics writer Darcy Van Poelgeest joins Byron to discuss his new  DC Comics project Doom Patrol, his Image Comics series The Karman Blade, and his new graphic novel The Cutting Garden. Darcy shares his take on Doom Patrol as the world's strangest heroes and as the brokest team in comics; why he embraced a heroes-for-hire concept instead of the usual unlimited-mansion-budget superhero fantasy; and how the disability community shaped his approach to writing Cliff, Rita, and Larry. Then, we get into the Larry and Miss Green scene that hit me harder than almost anything else as someone from that community. Finally some disability representation done well. Then we pivot to The Karman Blade, his reunion project with longtime collaborator Ian Bertram, a dark fantasy that strips the agency out of the hero protagonist, Anatta, that Darcy deliberately built to be hard to love but oddly that I immediately connected with.     Byron sits down with comics writer and journalist Zack Quaintance to talk about Death of the Comics Bookcase Volume 2: Reign of the Comics Bookcase, his crowdfunding anthology series where a sentient bookcase narrates a growing shared universe of oddball indie superhero stories. Zack breaks down how the bookcase evolved from a branding joke into a full framing device (at some point you just own it), why Volume 2 is more thematically coherent than the anthology style Volume 1, and how stories like Randy Ryder Buff Guy, Comics Pro (inspired by real chaos at San Diego Comic-Con panel Q&As) and a wrestling-influenced saga rooted in his love of Sting and 90s pro wrestling fit into the larger Comics Bookcase universe he's developing.
