S5E9 Visions of Africa w/ Touki Bouki (1963) & The Long Ships (64)

Associate producer of DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST (1991) and legendary film programmer FLOYD WEBB is back on the podcast with a pair of movies set in Africa, but only one of them is filmed there. It shouldn't be too hard to guess which one. First, Mory and Anta, a pair of young lovers dream of leaving the dusty streets of Dakar in Senegal for their fantasies of Paris in TOUKI BOUKI (1973). Director Djibril Diop Mambéty's visual masterpiece starts out hyper realistic but becomes more hallucinatory as Mory and Anta plan their escape. Emergency guest host Darren Norris says that it feels like somebody is telling you their dream. The image of Mory and Anta riding on a motorcycle with a zebu steer skull attached to the handlebars was recreated by Beyoncé and Jay-Z to promote their 2018 world tour and the movie was named the 66th greatest film of all time on Sight and Sound's Critic's Poll in 2022. Streaming on Criterion and HBOMax. Then Richard Widmark is a Viking conman and Sidney Poitier is a Moorish King and their both after "The Mother of All Voices," a bell made with half of the gold in all the world, in THE LONG SHIPS (1964), an historical epic that's a little heavy on the cheese while being groundbreaking in actually having a Black person portray the ruler of an empire. Directed by Jack Cardiff, the master of Technicolor who was the director of photography of Powell and Pressberger's visual feasts THE RED SHOES (1948), A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (46), and BLACK NARCISSUS (47) along with John Huston's THE AFRICAN QUEEN (51). Hey, he also shot Rambo and Conan sequels in the 80s. Also starring Russ Tamblyn in Viking hotpants and Rosanna Schiaffino in the outfit that inspired Princess Leia's geddup from RETURN OF THE JEDI. Streaming on tubi. Philena couldn't make it becasue she can't deal with the animal snuff no matter how artfully filmed the graphic slaughter of goats and steers may be, and her dad Greg is on assignment, but so they sent their cousin DARREN NORRIS from the CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE podcast as an emergency guest host! Thanks Darren! CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE does deep dives into pop culture artifacts. Darren and his co-host Jeff recently did a two part episode on the PHANTASM film series that you can listen to pay tribute to REGGIE BANNISTER, everyone's favorite undead-fighting icecream man from all five Phantasm films. Reggie, RIP. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep-16-phantasm-part-1/id1610952595?i=1000579814444 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep-16-phantasm-part-2/id1610952595?i=1000581278794 We also catch up with Floyd about everything he has going on including the new documentary LEGALLY DRUGGED (2026), an upcoming documentary about Yasuke the Black Samurai, and a martial arts film fest he's bringing to Chicago. S5E8 Mythical Odysseys w/ Jason and the Argonauts (63) & Hercules in the Haunted World (61)

Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY crushed it at the box office this weekend, but this is far from the first film to bring the Greek myths to life on the big screen. While Cory maintains that Nolan ain't stoney, we found some myth movies that are! Plus we've got cannabis comic and mythology nerd Ngaio Bealum to find the right strains to send you on your very own quest for the Golden Fleece. There is really no other movie we should begin with but this one. It's peak Ray Harryhausen with JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS from 1963. Harryhausen brings us the giant Talos, winged-harpies, the seven-headed Hydra AND the skeleton battle that may be the stop motion wizard's greatest achievement. Streaming on Tubi and Roku Channel (although Ngaio warns that the commercial breaks on Roku are "abrupt.") Then, horror maestro Mario Bava drags our beloved demigod Hercules straight to hell in HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD (1961) aka HERCULES AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (UK version). This entry in Italy's sword and sandal cycle from the early 60s is "totally metal" according to Cory, and it's Bava so it has freaky wraiths rising from the tombs of Hades and trees that bleed bright red Hammer horror blood. English body builder Reg Park is Hercules and Dracula himself CHRISTOPHER LEE is the vampire sorcerer who opposes him. The U.S. version with trippy Filmation credits sequence is on Pluto (appropriately); the UK version is on YouTube; and the Italian cut with subtitles is on Prime. Take your pick. As always, we begin by digressing with talk of rock shows and rock clubs we have loved, plus what to partake in before Nolan's three hour ODYSSEY and LISTENER MAIL! Please write to us at oldmoviesforyoungstoners@gmail.com. We love getting mail! Hosts: Cory Sklar, Ngaio Bealum and Bob Calhoun Greg and Philena are on assignment. S5E7 The PhilenApocalypse IV: Doomsday w/ The People's Joker (2022) & Sky High (2005)

The PhilenApocalypse is back and this time cannabis comic Ngaio Bealum is here to witness it! This year Philena takes a swipe at super heroes just as their box office fortunes are starting to wane. Her first pick puts the trans in transgressive as trans femme comedian Vera Drew violates all manner of copyrights with THE PEOPLE'S JOKER (2022), a stinging satire of Batman and stand-up comedy wrapped in a surprisingly personal coming-of-age tale. It'll all make sense if you just watch it on Tubi, but not before getting your strain recs from Ngaio and Philena. And then Philena goes a little more mainstream with SKY HIGH (2005), a live-action Disney comedy about a high school for superheroes that is floating in the clouds. Philena thought this was something she dreamed up until rediscovering it recently. It does exist! The movie has one of the most loaded casts ever with Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Bruce Campbell (!), Lynda Carter (!!), Chloris Leachman (!!!), Mary Elizabeth Winstead + Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald from "The Kids in the Hall"!!! Even with Philena controlling the horizontal and the vertical, she has to endure Ngaio and Bob descending into fanboy talk as they go way too deep into Legion of Super Heroes lore for a while, but Philena was fascinated by the tragic tale of Triplicate Girl and Duo Damsel at least. SKY HIGH is streaming on Disney+. Philena, Ngaio and Bob also discuss the zero-budget hit horror movies BACK ROOMS and OBSESSION. Are the Zoomer YouTubers taking over Hollywood, or is everyone is just sick of super heroes and STAR WARS??? The OMFYS trio entertain and inform as they grasp at answers. You can now hear Ngaio on CROSS-POLINATION, a 2-hour showcase of great music and comedy every Tuesday from 10am to Noon on Sacramento's KUTZ 95.7 FM. You can listen on the web at https://www.kutzfm.org. Hosts: Philena Franklin & Bob Calhoun. Cory Sklar & Greg Franklin are on assignment. S5E6 Grave Robbers from Hollywood w/ Plan 9 from Outer Space (1958)

They are bringing Val Kilmer back from the grave using AI to star in a crappy western, but Ed Wood brought Bela Lugosi back to life with some unused footage and an unconvincing double way back in the 50s! Without the use of computers even! The pending wave of AI movie star resurrections has Philena and Bob talking PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1958) in this emergency mini-episode mostly because Bob had a rant about it and didn't want it to go to waste. Philena and Bob also discuss the diva-on-diva beef between VAMPIRA and ELVIRA! Why can't we all just get along? Plus lots of Criswell, Tor Johnson and flying saucers over Hollywood! CAN YOU PROVE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN??? We also discuss the other dead movie star resurrections, such as GAME OF DEATH (1978), THE CROW (1994) and GLADIATOR (2000). And Philena talks about her near appearance in INCREDIBLY STRANGE WRESTLING before she was even born!!! NEXT EPISODE: It's THE PHILENAPOCALYPSE: ENDGAME with THE PEOPLE'S JOKER (2024) and THE ADVENTURES OF SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL (2005). With special guest Ngaio Bealum, the Dank Diplomat. S5E5 Cory's Punk ep. feat. Marc Edward Heuck w/ ..Fabulous Stains (82) & Forbidden Zone (80)

Cory usually brings the funk, but today he's got the punk with a pair of movies that warped his young mind way back in the 80s. And he's also brining along film historian and commentary track superstar Marc Edward Heuck in an episode we call CORY'S PUNK ROCK AND SHOCK TIL YOU DROP! (Or at least that's what Bob called it when he hyped it in our last episode.) Cory's first pick is LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982--kinda), a movie most of us discovered on USA Network's glorious NIGHT FLIGHT in the mid-80s. This movie about a defiant girl punk band getting out of their s****y mill town inspired L7 and Bikini Kill to start bands, and even Jon Bon Jovi cites it as an influence. JBJ notwithstanding, our world would be a crappier place without it. Marc contributed two commentary tracks to the excellent new Fun City Editions 4K UHD and Blu-ray release so he will tell you all about the movie that Paramount could not keep down. Then, the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo capture their crazed stage show in the surreal PHANTOM ZONE (1980). And if that wasn't enough, they added Hervé Villechaize and Susan Tyrrell as the king and queen to make it even weirder. Streaming on Roku, Tubi, Plex and more. In the intro segment, Marc tells us what it's like to record commentary tracks, Bob talks about the wonders of digital broadcast with all the MeTVs there, and Cory and Philena extol the virtues of low-budget TV jingles. Get the new Fun City Edition FABULOUS STAINS disc at https://www.funcityeditions.com/shop/p/fabulousstainsslipbox Marc Edward Heuck has been kicked off of Twitter so follow him on Bluesky at https://bsky.app/profile/meheuck.bsky.social Hosts: Cory Sklar, Philena Franklin and Bob Calhoun. S5E4 Roger Corman 420 with Gas-s-s-s (1970)

Roger Corman was born 100 years ago this month so to celebrate his centennial and 420, Greg and Bob pair pot with GAS-S-S-S (1970), Corman's hippy-dippy post-apocalyptic stoner comedy. It's definitely one of Roger's stoniest movies, if not quite his best. A doddering US senator unwittingly releases a bio-weapon that kills everyone over 25. With that premise, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern and Dennis Hopper had aged out so we get Bud Cort (RIP), Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen (who is on fire in this), and Talia Shire (then billed as Tally Coppola). They're like the Muppet Babies of AIP druggie flicks. With dirty psychedelic rock by Country Joe (RIP) and the Fish--the second film on this podcast to feature them and their music. Barry "The Fish" Melton kicks ass. Bob also talks about seeing the 4K restoration of Micheal Mann's THEIF (1981) at the Roxie in SF with the sound cranked way up. It's a good thing. And Greg gives us an update on his record room + why do people watch podcasts with aging men sitting around in shorts? What's the appeal? Hell if we know. Hosts: Greg Franklin and Bob Calhoun. Philena Franklin and Cory Sklar are on assignment. NEXT EPISODE: Cory's Punk Rock and Shock Til You Drop with LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982) and FORBIDDEN ZONE (1980) featuring special guest star writer, producer and movie geek extraordinaire Marc Edward Heuck. S5E3 AP Mike's Herzog-A-Mania w/ Aguirre Wrath of God (1972) & Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (80)

Mike Lisk AKA AP Mike of THE BEST SHOW joins us once again and this time he's bringing Werner Herzog with him for AP MIKE'S HERZOG-A-MANIA!!! Mike first suggested doing a Herzog episode way back in our Noirvember 2024 episode (S3E15), but it took us over a year to get our most popular guest to discuss a German filmmaker so popular that he is now a meme--or even several of them. Rather than mine some obscure corner of Herzog's filmography--and there's a lot to mine--Mike goes straight for the heart (of darkness) with AGUIRRE WRATH OF GOD (1972)--the stoniest movie possible with Germans playing Spanish conquistadors and totally losing their shit both onscreen and IRL. In the title role we've got KLAUS KINSKI, a thoroughly terrible human being with an amazing face that is hard not to be captivated by--especially when you've been vaping Glitter Bomb with your new DaVinci EQ vaporizer all day. Look, the guy's been dead since 1991. We just want to enjoy the bastard's art. We don't want to make him Secretary of Health and Human Services or anything. And then to lighten things up, Cory chooses Les Blank's short film WERNER HERZOG EATS HIS SHOE (1980). And SPOILER: Werner Herzog does eat his shoe, although it was simmered in duck fat and hot sauce by the legendary Alice Waters of Chez Panisse in Berkeley not that helped very much. Werner ate his shoe as part of a bet with Errol Morris, so we also talk a bit about Morris's GATES OF HEAVEN (1978) but not so much that we can't feature that masterpiece in a future episode. Both Herzog movies and GATES OF HEAVEN are on Criterion Channel + AGUIRRE is also streaming on Fandor, Tubi, Pluto, Roku, and whole bunch of other places. BREAKING: AP Mike also tells us how he got kicked off of Facebook and Instagram for "selling drugs," and he gives us the lowdown on his new Patreon BEER BUDDIES where he and Tom Scharpling drink terrible beer. Plus we speculate on the end of social media, and Bob pays tribute some really cool friends who died recently. You can follow Mike Lisk on X (his only social media outlet) at @APMike, and please check out his new Patreon show BEER BUDDIES: https://www.patreon.com/collection/2054068?view=expanded Hosts: Bob Calhoun & Cory Sklar. Philena and Greg are on assignment. OMFYS S5E2 Childhood Trauma w/ The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953) & The Boy with Green Hair (47)

Childhood trauma is everywhere in movies these days. You can find inner child work in Wicked and at least half the Pixar catalog. But we've always had it, only in the 1940s and 50s, it was all Freudian and weird. In our quest for trippy dream sequences, we pair weed with a pair of movies that probably traumatized kids as much as they entertained them. First, we have the only feature film written by Theodor Seuss Geisel AKA Dr. Seuss, THE 5,0000 FINGERS OF DR. T (1953) starring the amazing Hans Conried as a megalomaniacal piano teacher. It definitely delivers on Seuss-y dreaminess. And then, young Dean Stockwell is a war orphan who wakes up with green hair, and everyone in his town freaks the f-- out about it in, you guessed it, THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR from RKO in 1947. Plus, Bob tries out the new DaVinci EQ Vaporizer and--spoiler--it's so good it made him like TRON ARES. Plus, are Zoomers buying DVDs? Philena has answers! We've also got the TikTok Report and what up Appleton, Wisconsin? #RaiseYourEQ to new frequencies. NEXT EPISODE: AP Mike returns for some EARLY HERZOG!
