Do you hear that? What is that sound? That's the sound of cicadas. When summer arrives, cicadas begin to sing. 不會累嗎?: They've been singing all day! Don't they get tired? Maybe they do. But they've been waiting for this day for many years. Many years? But summer only lasts a few months! Did you know? Cicadas don't really live in trees. They spend most of their lives underground. Underground? Really? It's true! When cicadas are young, they're called nymphs. They live underground and feed on sap from tree roots. Some stay there for two years, some for five, and some even for more than ten years. More than ten years?! They must really want to see the world above. That's right. One day, they're finally ready. At night, they slowly crawl out of the ground. Then what happens? They find a tree and slowly climb up. Then their old shell splits open. Splits open? Like taking off a jacket? : Exactly! They leave their old shells behind and come out with a new body and transparent wings. This process is called moulting. So that's why we find empty cicada shells on trees! 知了——知了——知了—— That's right. When their wings are dry, they fly into the sky and begin to sing. Crii… Crii… Crii… Are they singing for everyone? Actually, most of the singers are male cicadas. They're saying, "I'm here! Come find me!" It's their mating song. So they're not putting on a concert! You could say that. Their audience is just other cicadas. They waited for so many years. How long do they live after they come out? Most adult cicadas live for only a few weeks. Even though their time is short, they do the most important things: sing, find a mate, and leave behind the next generation. Then the new baby cicadas return underground and begin another long wait. I see. A cicada waits for many years just to sing for one summer. So when you hear Crii… Crii… Crii…, it doesn't just mean summer has arrived. It also means one little cicada has spent years growing and waiting, and has finally welcomed its own summer. Yeah! Whoosh! Strong winds began to blow, and huge waves crashed against her boat. Nüwa tried her best to row back to shore, but the waves grew bigger and bigger. In the end, the boat overturned, and she was swallowed by the sea, never able to return home. Later, Nüwa's spirit transformed into a small bird. The bird had a white beak and red feet, making it look very special. Whenever it flew across the sky, it would cry out, "Jingwei! Jingwei!" So people began to call the bird Jingwei. Whenever Jingwei remembered her fate, she felt very sad. She thought, "If the sea is so dangerous, someone else might get hurt someday." So she made an astonishing decision. She would fill up the sea! From that day on, Jingwei flew to the mountains every day, picked up a small stone or twig, then carried it to the sea and dropped it into the water. One day passed. One month passed. One year passed. Jingwei still did not give up. One day, the sea could not help asking, "Jingwei, what are you doing?" Jingwei replied, "You have already taken my life. I cannot let you harm others, so I swear I will fill you up." The sea laughed loudly. "You? Just look at how small you are! And look at how huge I am! You will never be able to fill me up!" Jingwei flapped her wings and said seriously, "Hmph! As long as I never stop, I will fill you up one day." After saying that, she flew back to the mountains and continued carrying stones and twigs. From then on, whether it was spring, summer, autumn, or winter, people could always see Jingwei flying back and forth. And so, Jingwei kept carrying stones to the sea, never stopping. If you ever see a little bird dropping a stone or a twig into the sea, it just might be Jingwei. Kids, do you think Jingwei could ever fill up the sea? Actually, the most important part of this story is not whether Jingwei succeeds in the end. What matters is that she knew it was difficult, yet she chose to keep trying. Think about it. When you are learning to ride a bicycle and keep falling down, what do you do? When you are learning to swim, learning a language, or doing your homework, and it feels very difficult, would you give up? Jingwei teaches us that some things can’t be done in a hurry. But if we improve a little every day and keep working hard, we will get closer and closer to our goals. So the next time you face a challenge, try saying to yourself, "One more try!" Kids, I hope you always have the courage to keep trying! Kids, Dragon Boat Festival is almost here! Do you know what people do during the Dragon Boat Festival? The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture. There are many fun traditions on this day, and each one has a special meaning. First, many people eat zongzi. Zongzi is a food made with sticky rice and bamboo leaves. Some have meat, some have egg yolk, and some are sweet. People often share zongzi with their families. So, zongzi represents family togetherness and happiness. There are also dragon boat races during the festival. A dragon boat is a long boat with dragon designs on it. Dragon boat racing requires many people to work together. When everyone paddles together, the boat moves faster. So, dragon boat races teach us the importance of teamwork. Some people also hang mugwort and calamus at their doors. Long ago, people used these fragrant plants to keep insects away. They also hoped their families would stay healthy and safe. Children sometimes wear scented sachets, too. These sachets contain fragrant herbs. People believed that scented sachets could bring safety and good luck. So, the Dragon Boat Festival is not just a day for eating zongzi. It also reminds us to love our families and learn to work together. And it is a time to wish everyone health and happiness. How about you? Which Dragon Boat Festival tradition do you like the most? I wish you a safe and healthy Dragon Boat Festival! Have you ever wondered how poop is made? We go to the bathroom every day, but where does poop actually come from? Today, let's follow food on its journey and discover the amazing adventure it takes inside our bodies! After you eat rice, bread, fruit, and yummy snacks, the food begins an amazing adventure inside your body. First, it arrives in your mouth, where your teeth chew it into tiny pieces and saliva helps get it ready for the next part of the journey. Next, the food slides down a long tube called the esophagus and arrives at the stomach. The stomach is like a magical mixing machine. It squishes, stirs, and breaks down the food until it becomes a soft, mushy mixture. After that, the food enters the small intestine. The small intestine is one of the biggest helpers in your digestive system! This important organ absorbs useful nutrients and sends them throughout your body. These nutrients give you energy to run , help you grow taller, and keep your brain working hard. But not everything in food can be used by your body, so some leftovers continue traveling through the digestive system. The leftovers include waste your body does not need, bits of food that were not fully digested, and water that has not been absorbed. These all move into the large intestine. Here's something interesting: food usually takes about one to three days to complete its journey through your body. That means some of the food you eat today may not become poop until a few days later! But have you ever wondered why poop smells? It turns out that lots of tiny bacteria friends live in the large intestine. They help break down the leftover food, and while they are doing their job, they produce substances with strong smells. These mix with the food waste, which is how poop gradually gets its smell. At the same time, the large intestine slowly absorbs extra water. What remains becomes drier and drier and slowly turns into poop. The poop is then sent to the body's "storage room," called the rectum. When the rectum starts filling up, it sends a message to your brain saying, "Hey! It's time to use the bathroom!" That's when you begin to feel like you need to poop. So, poop is actually your body's way of getting rid of things it doesn't need. It shows that your digestive system is working hard every day to help keep you healthy. Next time you go to the bathroom, remember that your food has been on an incredible adventure inside your body. And don't forget to thank your hardworking digestive system! Have you ever wondered, what you would do if there were no toilets when you needed to poo? Let’s find out what Luna the little lynx does. Luna the little lynx lived in a forest valley high in the mountains. She could run very fast, and she was excellent at climbing trees. But Luna had one very troublesome little habit. Whenever she needed to poo, she had to find the most private place possible. Not near a trail. Not where anyone could see her. Preferably where even the smell could stay hidden. Because Luna was the shyest little lynx in the forest. Luna’s tummy suddenly began to rumble loudly. “Oh no… I need to find a place right now…” She immediately hurried deep into the forest. she saw a rabbit hop out of the bushes. The rabbit paused for a moment, leaving behind tiny round droppings. Then it bounced away again. “Rabbit poop always looks like little balls.” Luna continued walking. a deer was calmly chewing leaves. a small pile of dark pellets appeared on the ground. Mr. Deer barely even stopped walking. PLOP! Luna jumped in surprise. It was a huge brown bear. The bear stood right in the middle of the forest, and boldly left behind one enormous pile of poop. Then it casually walked away. Luna’s eyes grew wide. “Bears really are not shy at all…” Luna walked farther and farther into the forest. she found a tiny corner hidden by rocks and ferns. Nobody outside could really see inside. “This is the place…” First, Luna gently scraped the dirt away with her back paws. 過了一會兒後—— A little while later— 「呼…… “Phew… much better.” Then, she carefully pushed the dirt and leaves back into place. Until almost no trace could be seen. The wind blew through the forest. Leaves rustled softly. Luna nodded happily. Her little secret was safe again. Every animal in the forest has its own way of going to the toilet. Some animals are not shy at all. Others, like Luna, prefer quiet and private places. I hope you can be like Luna —stay clean after using the toilet and be thoughtful of others! “I need to poo.” “I need to poo.” A more polite way to say it is: “I need to go number two.” Today I’m going to introduce the origin of Mother’s Day. In ancient Greece, people held lively festivals to thank a goddess like a mother—Cybele. People believed that she brought life and took care of the world, just like mothers take care of their children. Later, ancient Rome adopted Cybele, calling her Magna Mater – “Great Mother”. They used singing, dancing, and festivals to express their gratitude to mothers. However, at that time, there was no Mother’s Day like we have today. A long, long time later, in the United States over one hundred years ago, there was a girl called Anna Jarvis. One day, her mother passed away, and she missed her very much. She said, “How wonderful it would be if there were a day when everyone could say thank you to their mothers!” She worked hard to share this idea with many people, and finally one day, U.S. The second Sunday of May each year would be Mother’s Day! From that day on, more and more places around the world began to celebrate Mother’s Day. Children make cards, give flowers, and say to their mothers: “Mom, thank you. I love you!” Kids, actually, Mother’s Day is not just a day for giving gifts. It reminds us—We should care about our mothers, help with housework , and say “I love you” in our daily lives. Remember to say “Happy Mother’s Day!” to your mom on the second Sunday of May. Kids, are the people you love still by your side? Or has someone already gone far, far away? Does missing someone make your heart ache? I would like to share a story with you, so you can learn what to do when you miss someone. One day, Amber’s mother left. Everyone said, “Your mom has gone to a very faraway place.” Amber asked, “Where is that place?” Some people said, “In the sky.” Others said, “In a very quiet place.” Amber looked up at the sky. The sky was big and blue, but she couldn’t see her mom. She went into the room and looked at the chair where her mom used to sit. The chair was still there, but her mom was not. She softly asked, “Mom, did you really go far away?” No one answered. The next day, Amber went to the park. The wind blew gently and moved her hair. She reached out her hand, trying to catch the wind. But the wind slipped away right away. She smiled and said, “The wind is so playful.” Amber saw the sunlight shining on the ground. The ground became warm. She stood in the sunlight and felt comfortable. Closing her eyes, she felt the warmth. The wind cannot be seen, but it is here. The sunlight cannot be touched, but it makes you feel warm. Then what about Mom? Could it be the same for her? She went back home and opened a small box. Inside was a photo of her and her mom smiling together. She looked at the photo and smiled too. At that moment, she suddenly didn’t feel so alone. At night, she felt a little scared. The room was quiet, and it was a little dark after the lights were off. She remembered how her mom used to pat her back and say, “Don’t be afraid, I’m here.” Amber gently placed her hand on her chest. She whispered, “It’s okay. I can be a little braver.” Slowly, she felt calm. A few days later, Amber realized something. When she thought of her mom, 當她做著以前和媽媽一起做的事情的時候, when she did the things they used to do together, 就會覺得心裡暖暖的。 her heart would feel warm. maybe her mom was not in a place she could find. But somehow, her mom was still in many places. and in the moment when Amber became braver. One day, Amber went to the park again. The wind blew, and she closed her eyes. She didn’t try to catch it anymore. She simply stood there quietly. “Mom, I think I know where you are now.” Amber didn’t know exactly where that place was, 可是她知道, but she knew 那是一個——看不見,卻可以感覺到的地方。 it was a place—that cannot be seen, but can be felt. Kids, do you also miss someone very much, or maybe a pet? Perhaps you can try to think about this: 當你想起那個人的時候, When you think of the one, 當你感到溫暖的時候, when you feel warm inside, 當你做著你們曾一起做的事的時候, when you do the things you used to do together, 那個你思念的人是不是也在你身邊呢? is the one you miss also right there with you? In fact, the one you miss has never truly left. If you feel with your heart, you will know that person is everywhere. “Love is everywhere.” It means love is all around us. Kids, love is everywhere. I hope you can feel it every day. Also, although I know you are everywhere, I and my little assistant pinpin really hope to see more comments and encouragement! Today I would like to introduce the origin of the Chinese Lunar Calendar to you. The Chinese Lunar Calendar originated during the Shang and Zhou dynasties in China more than three thousand years ago. At that time, months were mainly calculated according to the phases of the moon. However, people gradually discovered that spring seemed to arrive in the wrong month. When they counted the days, it should have been spring, yet the weather was still cold. Farmers did not know when to sow their seeds, and everyone felt confused. Later, people realized that they needed to follow the sun to determine the seasons. As a result, a simple lunisolar calendar was created. Although there was already a simple lunisolar calendar, errors often occurred, which caused great trouble for farmers. During the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu of Han saw the people’s difficulties and told the astronomer Dong Zhongshu, “We must create a new calendar so that the moon and the sun can work together and the seasons will no longer be confusing!” Eventually, Dong Zhongshu did establish a new calendar. This new system was called the “Taichu Calendar,” which became the predecessor of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The Taichu Calendar not only established the Twenty-Four Solar Terms – which were like micro-seasons – but also set rules for leap months. This allowed agricultural activities to stay in harmony with the seasons. Farmers could sow and harvest according to the solar terms, improving crop productivity. In addition, the government standardized the dates of important festivals and rituals. Astronomy, agriculture, politics, and folk customs were integrated into a complete social system. During the Qing Dynasty, with the help of Western missionaries, the accuracy of the Chinese lunar calendar was further improved. Now, do you have a clearer understanding of the Chinese Lunar Calendar? By the way, today, the only purely lunar calendar that is still widely used on a large scale is the Islamic calendar. If you would like to understand the Gregorian calendar, the lunar calendar, and the Chinese Lunar Calendar more clearly, please listen to Episode 108!
