Have you ever wondered why the first day of Chinese New Year isn't January 1st, and why the date changes every year? Let's hear what Amy and her friends have to say! Chinese New Year is almost here! I'm so excited! Me too. But have you noticed? This year, Chinese New Year is a little later, on February 17th. I remember last year's Chinese New Year was in January. That's strange. Do you know why? I know – it's because Chinese New Year is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. We have three different calendars: the Gregorian calendar, the Lunar calendar, and the Chinese lunar calendar. That's complicated! Chinese New Year is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. So, which one do we usually use? We usually use the Gregorian calendar! It's based on the sun. Based on the sun? Yes! The Earth revolves around the sun once a year, so a Gregorian year is about 365 days. So the dates we usually use are based on the Gregorian calendar? Yes, like government and school calendars. If we use the Gregorian calendar, the months corresponding to each season are roughly the same. What about the lunar calendar? The lunar calendar is based on the moon. Doesn't the moon look different every day? Yes! The moon goes from full to crescent and back to full, and that's how a month is counted. Wow~ The moon is counting the days for us! That's right, but a lunar year only has about 354 days. So the lunar seasons keep shifting to earlier months; summer might fall in January or February. That's awkward. It's better to use the Gregorian calendar. But with the Gregorian calendar, we might not see a full moon on the 15th of every month. What do we do then? No problem, we can use the Chinese lunar calendar. The Chinese lunar calendar is very clever; it's based on both the sun and the moon. Oh~~ So the Mid-Autumn Festival falls around the same time of year every year, and the moon is always full on that day. Exactly! That's the advantage of the Chinese lunar calendar. The Spring Festival and Dragon Boat Festival are also based on the Chinese lunar calendar. Jasper: Huh? But there's about an 11-day difference between the Gregorian and lunar calendars each year, so what do we do? That's why the lunar calendar adds a leap month every 2 to 3 years, meaning a certain month repeats itself. No wonder last year, 2025, had a leap June in the Chinese lunar calendar, meaning there were two Junes. I also heard that 2028 will have a leap May. Yes, that's right. The ancients were so clever! Thank you, I finally understand! Kids, do you understand the Gregorian calendar, the lunar calendar, and the Chinese lunar calendar? Weren't the ancients very clever? “They are so smart!” 請跟Bear老師再說一次: “They are so smart!” See you next time! Little Bear Tommy has made some resolutions for the new year. Do you think he can keep the promises he has made to himself? It was the first morning of the new year. Soft sunlight came through the window. Tommy sat on the bed and smiled. This year, I will definitely get up early every day and not stay in bed too long. I will definitely exercise more. I will definitely help my mom with the housework more often. I will definitely tidy up my room. I will also definitely study every day. Anyway, I will definitely do my best. That day, Tommy kept his promise. He got up early. He exercised. He helped his mom clean the living room. He put his toys back. And he reviewed his lessons. However, things were a little different the next day. It's so warm and cozy lying in bed that I don't want to get up. It's so cold outside, I don't want to exercise. I guess it's okay to just stay in bed today? Just one day, I'll get up early tomorrow! Just then Tommy remembered the promise he had made to himself. I will definitely do my best. He found that making promises was easy. However, keeping promises was difficult. He felt as if an angel and a devil were inside him. The angel reminded him to keep his promises. The devil told him it was okay to slack off. Tommy struggled with this internally for a moment. Then he took a deep breath and said: Although I want to slack off, I had already made a promise to myself. I will definitely do my best. I feel that I should try to keep my promise. Tommy tried to get out of bed, tidied up his bed, exercised a bit, and asked his mother if she needed any help. Every day, Tommy would struggle in bed for a moment, then remembered the promise he had made to himself: I will definitely do my best. And finally found the courage to get up. And so, little by little, day by day, Tommy found that everything was getting easier and easier. Each time he kept his promise, he felt himself growing stronger and stronger. Kids, making resolutions is easy, but keeping your promises is difficult, right? Don't worry, there's a way. Just do a little bit every day and stick with it, you'll find it's not so hard. “Stick with it!” 請跟Bear老師再說一次: “Stick with it!” Let's get ready to ring in the New Year with the children in this book! An English Picture Book “The Night before New Year's”/英文繪本《跨年夜》 Author/作者:Natasha Wing Illustrator/插畫家:Amy Wummer Translator/翻譯:Bear Weir ‘Twas the last day of December, what we call New Year's Eve. A whole year had flown by, it was hard to believe. We were pretty excited. Our puppy was too. We cheered, “Out with the old and in with the new.” “Oh please.” I begged, “Can we stay up till midnight?” For this one special evening, my parents told us, “All right.” So we drove to the store to buy party supplies. Hats! Horns and poppers! And sparkly bow ties! At home we put up all the streamers and balloons ─ silver glitter and gold stars to twinkle up our rooms. A banner was hung by the ceiling with care, in hopes that Baby New Year soon would be there. We gathered for dinner ─ a grand, late-night, feast! All our family favorites ─ I ate three cupcakes, at least! With a clink of our glasses we all gave a toast, making New Year's resolutions ─ my dad had the Most! But I couldn't come up with one single vow. “That's okay.” said Mom. “you don't have to right now.” After dinner was done, we played checkers and charades, then broke out the cards for a long game of Spades. We shared fond memories ─ oh, there were dozens! Holidays, camping trips, and new baby cousins. Our eyelids were droopy, so we ducked out for fresh air. Then came in to watch the crowd lining Times Square. “One more hour.” said Dad, “till the New Year is here!” “Put on your hats,” said Mom. “Let's practice our cheer!” Counting down from ten, without a single mistake, we tooted horns and popped poppers! I was now wide awake! My brother chased our puppy all through the house, then Mom and Dad noticed it was as quiet as a mouse. There was no sound of barking no little-boy chatter. So we sprang from the couch to see what was the matter. When what to our wondering eyes should appear, but two Party Poopers─ 我們到底會看到什麼呢?結果居然出現了兩個掃興鬼—— Make that three now, oh dear. While our puppy curled up on my father's lap, my brother and I went upstairs for a 5-minute nap. We both soon were nestled all snug in our beds, while visions of fireworks danced in our heads. The next thing I knew it was sunny and bright. Rats! We missed ringing in the New Year last night! But that's when I came up with my resolution, I believe. I absolutely will stay up for next New Year's Eve! Kids, are you going to stay up late this New Year's Eve? “Absolutely!” Kids, will you continue to learn in the new year? “Absolutely!” See you next year! -- Hosting provided by SoundOn

Little Red the fox is worried about this. Let's listen to what she has to say! An English Picture Book “Before we sleep” / 英文繪本《我們入睡以前》 Author/作者: Giorgio Volpe Illustrator/插畫家: Paolo Proietti Translator/翻譯:Bear Weir As the season turned, the forest was dressed in new colors of rich amber, burned orange, and chestnut brown. Little Red the fox was happy, because now it would be much easier to hide. A fox would be hard to spy among the dried brown leaves, burgundy bushes, and coppery grasses. Only in the open meadow would Hazel the dormouse be able to catch sight of Little Red. Little Red and Hazel spent hours and hours playing hide-and-seek together. The two friends love jumping and rolling in the crisp dried leaves. They love the rustling sound. “The leaves are laughing with us,” said Hazel joyfully. During these moments of happiness, the cold air hinted of the coming winter. Little Red felt a tinge of sadness. For Red, the smell of winter meant one thing: loneliness. Soon Little Red's very best friend in the world would settle down in a warm burrow to hibernate. “Hazel, perhaps this season, you will sleep less,” said Little Red hopefully, trying to sound cheerful. “Little Red, I am no fox, I am a dormouse. I'd like to stay awake and keep you company, but you know, in the end, I must always sleep. So Little Red started to think of ways to keep Hazel from falling asleep. “What if I could make the sun stay high? Then winter would not be so cold.” “What if I could ask the forest to hold its fruit? Then there would be food all winter long.” “What if I tickled Hazel to stay awake? Then we could play and play.” The dormouse started to yawn. 睡鼠開始打哈欠, “Hazel, I want us to stay together forever,” pleaded the friend, 「榛果,我要我們永遠在一起,」小紅懇求她的朋友。 “ Little Red, I promise, when the winter gives way to spring, I will be here for you, and we will play again.” “I know, Hazel, but before you sleep, may I tell you a story?” “Why? …yes, ahh… as long as it is short,” replied Hazel sleepily, with head nodding and eyes closing. So Little Red curled up on the forest floor and Hazel nestled into the soft warm tail to listen. But, before a word of the story was spoken, the two friends had fallen fast asleep, together. Kids, hibernation is very important for some animals, so you must not disturb them. When winter comes, the world seems to become quieter. Does this make you feel lonely and sad? Don't worry, as long as you get through winter, spring will always come. “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” This is a line from a famous poem by English poet Percy Shelley. You can also use this phrase to encourage friends who are going through difficulties! 請跟Bear老師再說一次: “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” Kids, there are also many interesting things to discover in winter! See you next time! -- Hosting provided by SoundOn

Seemingly remembering something, the fox caught it and went back to feed the baby bird. Having eaten such delicious food, the baby bird happily kissed the fox, and just like that, the fox's heart melted. From that day on, the fox began to act more and more like a parent caring for the baby bird - even taking the baby bird to the top of the mountain, waving his front paws and pretending to jump down, all to teach the baby bird to fly. But this method didn't work at all, so the fox had no choice but to take the baby bird to lower ground to learn slowly. Turning around, the fox suddenly saw the baby bird playing with a butterfly and learning flying from that butterfly. At first, the baby bird flew slowly and wobbly until it landed in the fox's arms. The fox hugged the baby bird tightly, overjoyed. Just then, the fox looked up and saw a flock of birds flying overhead. The fox knew that separation from the baby bird was not far off. The fox cherished the time spent with the baby bird even more. Watching the baby bird sleeping at night, the fox wished time could stand still. Time passed, and the baby bird had finally grown up. Under the fox's guidance, the little bird had also learned to find food independently. They kept each other company, and whenever it rained heavily, they would huddle together for warmth. One day, when the fox woke up, found that the little bird was gone. After searching for a long time, the fox finally found the little bird building a nest in a tree. The fox didn't make a sound, but simply turned around and left silently. One day, the fox led the little bird to the lake to fish, but they caught nothing before two wild bears spotted them. The bears chased them and cornered them at the edge of a cliff. Just as they were about to be caught, the little bird grabbed the fox's front paws and made it hold onto its own feet, then flew off the cliff with the fox. But the fox was too heavy, and the little bird wasn't big enough to carry the fox, so they couldn't fly and both of them fell down. To avoid dragging the little bird down to die together, the fox let go and plummeted. Just as the fox was about to hit the ground, a large bird swooped down, grabbed the fox, and landed safely. It turned out the little bird's mother had come looking for it. The mother bird flew up and skimmed across the lake, catching a fish and giving it to the fox. The fox looked at the little bird, and neither of them said a word, but they both knew that the time for farewell had come. The little bird kissed the fox, and the mother bird also kissed her child. And so, the little bird flew away with its mother, while the fox turned and headed into the forest. Kids, let's cherish everyone we meet, just like the fox and the little bird, but when it's time to say goodbye, we must also learn to let go. “So long, my friend!” You can say this if you are about to part ways with a friend and don't know when you will see this friend again. 請跟Bear老師再說一次: “So long, my friend!” Kids, nothing is certain, so I cherish every moment we meet online. Please feel free to leave comments and interact with me, and also help share my stories with more people. If you're interested in this story, you can also check out the link in the information section to watch this animated short film.
