212: July Joy Series – Raising Your Happiness Level with The Habit Thrive Cup

What if happiness isn't something you find... but something you quietly build, one small moment at a time? In this week's episode of our July Joy Series on the Habit Thrive Podcast, we're exploring the difference between happiness and joy—two words we often use interchangeably but that can mean very different things. While happiness is our overall sense of well-being over time, joy often shows up in small, everyday moments when we're fully present. We're also going to dive into the fascinating science of happiness and the encouraging research that suggests our daily habits can have a meaningful impact on how happy we feel over time. I'm also introducing a fun mindfulness practice I'm calling the Habit Thrive Cup—a simple way to notice the moments of joy that often go unnoticed and see how small, intentional choices can gradually fill your cup throughout the day. If you've ever wondered whether it's really possible to become a happier person, or you're simply looking for more joy in your everyday life, this episode is for you. Grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and then ask yourself: What might happen if you started noticing all the little moments that make your cup overflow? 211: Joy Series: How Mindfulness Clears the Way for Joy

Joy isn't always about adding more happiness to your life—it may start with creating a little space for it. That sounds simple enough, but many of us don't realize just how full our minds and nervous systems have become. Before we can welcome in more joy, it helps to become aware of what's already taking up space. On Episode #211 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we're exploring the connection between mindfulness, your nervous system, and your capacity for joy. Together, we'll look at how the things we consume every day—from the news and social media to conversations and entertainment—can either support our well-being or quietly crowd out our joy. We'll also talk about the importance of understanding your own sensitivity and tolerance for life's inputs, without judgment. Through simple self-awareness and curiosity, you can begin to recognize what leaves you feeling calm, grounded, and open—and what leaves you feeling overwhelmed. This week, I invite you to pause, notice, breathe, and start "clearing the decks" (as one of my clients likes to say!) so there's more room for the moments of joy that are already waiting for you. 210: Why Joy Feels So Hard Right Now: Midlife and the Double Whammy

Have you ever looked around and thought, "Life is good... so why do I still feel so heavy?" If that question has crossed your mind lately, you're not alone. In this episode of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we're talking about why joy can feel surprisingly difficult right now, especially for women in midlife. Between the demands of work, family, aging parents, changing roles, and the constant noise of the world around us, it's no wonder so many of us are carrying a weight we can't quite explain. This isn't about forcing positivity or pretending everything is okay. It's about understanding why our nervous systems may be craving something different. This episode also kicks off our July Joy series, where we'll spend the next month exploring simple, meaningful ways to reconnect with hope, gratitude, connection, and the quiet moments that help us feel like ourselves again. Your invitation this week is beautifully simple: Stop chasing happiness and start noticing the small pockets of peace that are already waiting for you. Joy may not be something you have to create—it may be something you've simply forgotten how to notice. Lorrie xoxox Loving the show? Let’s connect! 209: Habit Practice ~ How to Reset Your Nervous System with Just Your Breath.m4a

What is the absolute least amount that you can do right now to move, to shift, and to get unstuck? The answer is remarkably simple: just breathe. In this episode of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we are diving back into the world of "Movement Morsels" (a direct continuation of last week's Episode #208!). Today, we are exploring a beautiful, powerful truth: simply breathing is movement. This is not your typical podcast episode. There is no formal intro or outro. Instead, after a very brief setup, Lorrie guides you through a short, powerful 3-minute Breath Practice designed to help you tune out the noise of the external world and tune into the magnificent, hidden choreography happening inside your body. What You’ll Experience in This Breath Morsel:  The Anatomy of the Inhale: Learn how your diaphragm moves downward like a gentle piston, massaging your liver, stomach, and pancreas to create space and boost digestion.  The Hug of the Exhale: Visualize your diaphragm doming upward like an upside-down umbrella, nesting against your lungs and giving your heart a physical, soothing "hug."  The Internal Pump: Understand how this rhythmic internal tide filters out stagnation, shifts heavy emotions, and signals absolute safety to your nervous system.  External Release: Experience how tuning into your internal movement allows tight external muscles—like your neck, shoulders, and lower back—to completely melt and let go. How to use this episode: I highly recommend downloading or saving this specific episode to your favorite player. Come back to it at different times of the day, in different circumstances, and notice how it moves you. Mentioned in this Episode:  Episode #208: Movement Morsels (Catch up on last week's episode to learn more about the philosophy behind minimal movement!) Enjoy the show? 208: You Don’t Have to Exercise Perfectly – How Movement Morsels Help You Build Health One Habit at a Time

Have you ever looked at exercise guidelines and thought, "Ugh... there's no way I'm doing all of that!"? If so, this episode is for you! This week, on episode #208 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we're talking about why you don't have to exercise perfectly to experience real benefits. I'm digging into the idea of "movement morsels"—small bits of movement sprinkled throughout your day—and explaining how even a minute or two of activity can make a difference for your health, energy, strength, and mobility. We also chat about letting go of all-or-nothing thinking when it comes to exercise. Whether it's a few squats while waiting for your coffee, balancing while filling a water pitcher, or taking a quick walk around the block, those little moments add up! If you've been feeling overwhelmed by fitness recommendations or wondering if what you're doing is enough, this episode is a reminder that every bit of movement counts and that building a healthy, active life can be much simpler than we often make it. 207: Mindful Balance: The Movement Habits and Routines That Support Your Me Now Years

The other day, I found myself standing on one foot while brushing my teeth—a habit I've picked up as a quick balance exercise. Somewhere between trying not to wobble and trying not to get toothpaste on my shirt, I started thinking about how balance shows up in so many areas of life. This week, I’m wrapping up our May Movement Series on the Habit Thrive Podcast by talking about balance—the movement pillar that helps bring everything else together. While we often think of balance as simply not falling over, it’s so much more than that. In this episode, I share why physical balance becomes increasingly important as we age, simple ways to improve it right at home, and how balance training can support strength, confidence, and independence for years to come. We also explore how balance connects to the other movement pillars we've discussed this month: cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, and mobility. But the conversation doesn’t stop there. I talk about balance in a broader sense, too—balancing our schedules, energy, relationships, and expectations of ourselves. As women in our Me Now Years, it’s easy to focus on taking care of everyone else, but true balance means remembering that we matter, too. Most importantly, I share why balance isn’t something we achieve once and then keep forever. It’s an ongoing practice of making small adjustments, listening to what we need, and responding to life as it changes. Whether you need a workout, a nap, or a little of both, this episode is a reminder that balance isn't about perfection—it's about presence, self-care, and creating a life that feels a little steadier, one choice at a time. 206: 3 Ways to Add More Flexibility in Your Me Now Years

So far in our May Movement series, we've been exploring how cardio keeps us energized and strength training helps us feel capable and confident. This week, on Episode #206 of the Habit Thrive Podcast, we're talking about flexibility—and why it matters so much more than simply being able to touch your toes. Flexibility is actually just one piece of the larger mobility puzzle. We're looking at simple, realistic ways to build flexibility into everyday life without adding another overwhelming task to your already full schedule. From gentle stretches before getting out of bed to incorporating small moments of movement throughout the day, these tiny habits can add up to big benefits over time. We also talk about the value of a regular yoga practice and how slowing down, breathing, and moving mindfully can help release tension and improve how your body feels. As we continue building our movement foundation this month, flexibility helps tie everything together. Sometimes it's not just the stretches themselves that help us feel better—it's the slowing down, the breathing, and the opportunity to release some of the tension we've been carrying around.  Lorrie xoxox Loving the show? 205: Strength Training, Strong Backs & Knowing When NOT to Lift the Cottage Fridge

Want to hear something I've learned recently?... Just because I can lift something doesn’t always mean I should. Somewhere between cottage season, flower pots, and unloading trucks, I’ve realized that strength in our Me Now Years looks a little different — and honestly, a whole lot wiser. In today’s episode, I’m talking about real-life strength — the kind that helps us carry groceries, lift luggage, paddle kayaks, garden, travel, climb stairs, and simply move through life with more confidence and independence. We'll be talking about why strength training becomes even more important after 35 and menopause; how muscle supports our metabolism, joints, bones, balance, and confidence; and why combining strength training with cardio is one of the best things we can do for long-term health and longevity. I'm also going to share the Canadian healthy aging recommendations for adults over 50 and why consistency matters far more than extreme workouts or perfection. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that strength training in our Me Now Years is not about becoming smaller — it’s about becoming more capable, resilient, and supported in the life we want to live.
