When Encouragement Becomes an Excuse for Mediocrity

I competed in my first HYROX Pro race, and I walked away disappointed. Not because I didn't give everything I had on race day, but because I realized I hadn't given everything I was capable of during the months leading up to it. And what surprised me even more was how people responded to that disappointment. "At least you finished." "Most people wouldn't even attempt something like that." "You're a busy dad. Give yourself some grace." All well-intentioned responses. But what if the encouragement we give each other is sometimes the very thing keeping us from growing? In this episode of Built For More, I'm unpacking how my HYROX experience exposed some uncomfortable truths about my own nice guy mentality, the excuses I've been accepting, and the kind of relationships men actually need. We explore: Why being a busy dad shouldn't automatically become an excuse for mediocrity. How the nice guy mentality shows up in the way we encourage ourselves and others. The difference between comforting someone and genuinely supporting their growth. Why authentic friendships require accountability, honesty, and a willingness to sit in discomfort. How to balance personal reflection, journaling, and solitude with a community that challenges you. What I'm changing in my training as I prepare for my next challenge. The biggest lesson? Sometimes the most loving thing someone can do isn't tell you that you're doing great. It's sit with you in your disappointment, help you recognize where you fell short, and challenge you to become who you're capable of being. We need people who will encourage us. But we also need people who will hold us accountable. Iron sharpens iron. And sometimes that process is uncomfortable. Resentment is the Receipt

Why do we say yes when we really want to say no? And why do we end up resenting the very people we're trying to love? In this week's reflection, we're exploring the hidden expectations behind being the "nice guy" and how our desire to feel loved, respected, and appreciated can lead us into resentment. Whether it's doing more at work and expecting recognition, helping around the house and hoping for intimacy, or saying yes to our kids when we're already exhausted, we often enter these situations with an unspoken expectation of getting something in return. And when that expectation isn't met, resentment begins to build. But what if the resentment we're feeling toward our spouse, our kids, or our circumstances is actually revealing something about ourselves? In this episode, we explore: Why we say yes when we really mean noThe hidden expectations and "secret contracts" behind nice guy behaviorHow our desire to be seen, respected, and loved shapes our decisionsWhy resentment might have more to do with our own choices than the people around usHow managing our stress, emotions, and daily habits allows us to show up with more patience, presence, and loveTwo questions to reflect on this week: When you say yes, what are you really hoping to receive in return? When you feel resentment, who or what are you actually resenting? The goal isn't to stop being kind, generous, or accommodating. It's to become the kind of man whose actions are an authentic expression of who he is, rather than a strategy to earn love and approval.
