Sammy didn't write the lyrics, (they were sent to him byMark Tamburino,  a mutual friend of Kenny Chesney), but he was so emotionally moved by the words, he knew he had to record them! This time, we feature Sammy's first solo retail single, Flamingos Fly, from his first solo album, 1976's Nine on a Ten Scale. Flamingos Fly was "gifted" to Sammy from Van Morrison, as Hagar and Morrison were both recording at the same studio (The Record Plant) at the same time. Morrison liked Hagar’s voice and essentially "gifted" him the song.  While Van Morrison wrote the lyrics, Sammy’s choice to record them as his first solo statement feels prophetic in that the song is drenched in imagery of the Cabo Wabo lifestyle long before it existed, almost like this song was the subconscious - or conscious- blueprint for his "Billionaire Beach Bum" persona.  Come to think of it, did Sammy hit upon this lifestyle vibe before Buffet? Buffet only became recognized for his "island escapism" persona" following the release of the song "Margaritaville" in 1977, a full year after 1976's Nine on a Ten Scale! This time, we feature the acoustic lullaby "Inner Child",  a track Sammy first revealed during a live solo performance on Dan Rather’s AXS TV program, The Big Interview, in February 2016.  Sammy wrote the song following a family retreat where he gained deep insights into how his children viewed their parents.  It's a hidden gem that's hard to find as it was only released as a digital single on Feb. 25 2016 and has since vanished. This time, we feature "Different Devil", the melodic second single from Chickenfoot's second studio album, titled Chickenfoot III, released in 2011. Unlike the band's more aggressive riff-heavy tracks, "Different Devil" is a textured, rootsy, and mid-tempo song that features acoustic guitar layering and gorgeous background harmonies.  The song explores "grown-up" concerns within long-term relationships. Sammy’s lyrics address a partner wondering if there are better options elsewhere, using the central metaphor: "There's a wise old tale / 'Bout the same old Hell / Only the devil is changed".  Hmmm....wonder if he's singing to a ex-lover or is he sending a sneaky message to a familiar-looking legendary guitar player?!?? This time, we feature "Never Said Goodbye",  the final track on Sammy’s 2016 album, This Is Sammy Hagar: When The Party Started, Vol. 1. A compilation of mostly previously released songs (some were re-envisioned) and two new tracks. Sammy referred to the collection as "the best songs I wrote post-Van Halen that mostly didn’t get a lot of mainstream attention." As one of the two new entries, "Never Said Goodbye" finds the RedRocker waxing nostalgic about loved ones he never got to bid farewell to.  Inspired by a conversation with John Mellencamp about writing an "old-time standard," Sammy sent the finished track to Mellencamp, who praised it as "a classic."
