Unfollowing Mum
Unfollowing Mum : Break Unhealthy habits and be the parent you wish you'd had is available for preorder NOW! A therapist recommended podcast for cycle breakers by someone who has lived the experience. Host Harriet Shearsmith knows first hand how challenging it can be to navigate estrangement, toxic family and dysfunctional dynamics in a digital age where setting boundaries and protecting your peace is harder than ever. In 2023 we’re unfollowing mum. We’re breaking the cycle, unsubscribing from the drama by healing generational trauma and putting ourselves and our mental health first. Each week I will answer your anonymous questions, discuss experiences and tackle the issues surrounding estrangement, generational trauma and navigating toxic families. Sometimes I’ll speak to experts, people with lived experience and other cycle breakers to share their point of view. You’re not alone, there is a community of people navigating parenthood without solid role models, learning to love themselves after emotional abuse whilst breaking the cycle for the future generations 💜 Hosted on Acast. As a child to a mother with borderline personality disorder, I feel like the host (and guests) are telling stories from my own childhood. Listening opened some old wounds I didn’t realize were there but it’s also validating to hear that others have had similar experiences. I went NC with my mom almost 3 years ago, it’s so helpful hearing other’s experience with this as society still pushes the “forgive family” narrative. Thank you for this podcast and please keep it going.
Ok at first….

This podcast originally was ok if you’re just starting off with low or no contact with family/friends. However, after years of no contact the creator harbors bitter resentment and has zero interest into moving into forgiveness (not reconciliation) which would truly set her free of the harm her mother caused. I had to stop listening - I don’t want to be filled with rage but want to be healed. She will tell you she is healed but listening to a few episodes will tell you she is still very hurt.
When Religion Becomes Divisive

Harriet hosts guests that really get to the hurt and pain of religious abuse and family estrangement. She guided me to personally explain the impact of my high control religion, Mormonism, on my sense of self, the trauma my religious upbringing, and the resulting estrangement from my Mormon family. Harriet’s podcasts help us all feel a little less alone by providing others experiences and her suggestions for healing and moving forward. Unfollowing Mum provides such a valuable service to those of establishing our identities after leaving a high demand religion and recovering from religious trauma.
