Episode 142: The Most Unconventional Resume You’ll Ever Hear with Jason Westphal

Make sure to send us text message with any questions or comments! Heath and Josh sit down with longtime friend and Temple native Jason Westphal for a conversation that proves life rarely follows a straight line. What starts as a typical college experience quickly takes a turn when Jason jokingly admits he somehow managed to get “blacklisted by the ladies,” prompting him to make a completely unexpected decision—joining a traveling carnival. From there, things only get wilder. Jason shares stories from the road, including the time he found himself riding camels and even ostriches as part of the carnival circuit. Eventually trading carnival life for the bright lights of Los Angeles, Jason pursued work as a Hollywood stuntman, giving him a front-row seat to the adrenaline-fueled world of film stunts. Along the way he also stepped onto the bodybuilding stage, testing his discipline and drive in competitive bodybuilding. After years of chasing unique experiences, Jason ultimately found himself back where it all started—his hometown of Temple, Texas. Now the owner of his own junk removal business, Jason reflects on the winding road that brought him home and how every strange twist along the way helped shape the life he’s built today. It’s a hilarious, unpredictable, and inspiring episode about taking chances, embracing the unexpected, and realizing that sometimes the most unconventional paths lead you exactly where you’re meant to be. Episode 141: Betting It All on Wings with Mike Dent

Make sure to send us text message with any questions or comments! In this episode of Randomness, hosts Heath and Josh sit down with Temple restaurateur Mike Dent, owner of Wings Pizza N Things, for a powerful conversation about risk, resilience, and purpose. Mike shares the story of walking away from a stable corporate career to take a massive leap of faith with his wife and open their own restaurant in Temple, Texas. With no roadmap and plenty of uncertainty, they learned the business on the fly — figuring out what worked, what didn’t, and how to survive the tough early years. Mike talks candidly about the growing pains, financial stress, long hours, and the grit it took to turn hard seasons into two decades of success. Now, nearly 20 years later, that leap of faith has paid off in a big way — so much so that they’re opening a second location. Beyond business, Mike opens up about something even closer to his heart: his work with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), supporting children in the foster care system. Having grown up in the system himself, Mike explains why giving back isn’t just community involvement — it’s personal. This episode is about betting on yourself, building something from the ground up, and using your success to make a difference where it matters most. Thanks for listening! Episode 140: Making Waves the Right Way with Juan Caraveo

Make sure to send us text message with any questions or comments! In this episode of Randomness, hosts Heath and Josh sit down with Juan Caraveo for an inspiring and eye-opening conversation about perseverance, purpose, and the world of competitive sports. Juan shares how his love for swimming began in high school and how he was determined to continue competing at the collegiate level. After graduation, he joined a swim team outside the University of Arizona with hopes of walking on to the university’s swim team. When that opportunity didn’t come to fruition, Juan made the tough decision to step away, enter the workforce, and regroup. Eventually, his passion for education and athletics led him back to school at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. From there, Juan found his calling teaching at the high school level, where he also coached swimming—pouring into the next generation of student-athletes. His commitment to the sport didn’t stop there. Driven by his love for swimming, Juan went on to start his own swim team, creating opportunities for kids who shared the same passion and drive he once had. That journey ultimately opened the door to a career with the US Anti-Doping Agency, where Juan now works to protect the integrity of sport. He gives Heath and Josh a behind-the-scenes look at how athletes are drug tested, the lengths some competitors go to try to avoid detection, and the constant evolution of anti-doping efforts.
