You Don't Have to Prove Yourself Anymore | Self-Worth, Fear & Fatherhood

Send us Fan Mail Sometimes the smallest things can ruin your entire day. A cracked windshield. Your kid getting the teacher they didn't want. A change at work. A plan falling apart. Thomas and Frankie kick off this episode of DADHOOD talking about how differently they respond to those moments today—and why learning to adapt instead of allowing frustration to control the rest of your day can change the energy you bring home to your family. But the conversation quickly goes much deeper. Thomas reflects on losing the radio career he'd built for 30 years and admits that, despite being miserable toward the end, he probably never would have walked away on his own. Losing the job forced him into a new life—and ultimately helped him recognize just how much stress, exhaustion, and work he had been carrying home. He also opens up about years of severe sleep issues, an unhealthy reliance on sleep aids, the difficult process of getting off them, and a frightening period of withdrawal that forced him to confront just how much his physical and emotional health had been affected. Frankie then turns the conversation toward something many men quietly struggle with: the need to prove ourselves. Why do we push ourselves so hard? Who are we trying to impress? And how much of our ambition is actually being driven by old beliefs about whether we're strong enough, productive enough, successful enough—or simply enough? During a brutally hot run, Frankie found himself confronting one of his deepest fears: that nobody chooses him. But sitting underneath that fear was an entirely different realization: You've always chosen yourself. This episode is an honest conversation about identity, career, health, fear, childhood conditioning, self-worth, fatherhood, and learning to recognize the voice in your head without letting it run your life. In this episode: • Why small frustrations don't have to ruin your entire day • Teaching kids to adapt when life doesn't go their way • Why flexibility is an underrated life skill • Losing a career—and discovering you might be happier without it • The danger of bringing work stress home to your family • Remote work and creating boundaries between work and home • What chronic sleep deprivation can do to your body and mind • Breaking an unhealthy dependence on sleep aids • Why knowing something is unhealthy doesn't always make stopping easy • Fear, identity, and major life transitions • The childhood beliefs we continue carrying as adults • When productivity becomes tied to self-worth • Pushing yourself because you want to grow vs. because you need to prove something • The fear of not being chosen • Learning to recognize that you are enough • Why self-awareness may be one of the greatest tools we can develop as fathers You don't have to eliminate every old belief before becoming a better man or father. Sometimes progress starts by recognizing the voice when it shows up and saying: Connect with DADHOOD Website: dadhood.co Instagram: @dadhood.co YouTube: @dadhood Subscribe, follow, and share this episode with another dad. I Don't Want to Be a Dad Today | Burnout, Guilt & Giving Yourself Grace

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of DADHOOD, Thomas and Frankie get brutally honest about the days when life has drained your bandwidth and your kids still need something from you. Instead of pretending great dads never feel overwhelmed, they explore what happens when we acknowledge those feelings without allowing them to define us. The conversation dives into the guilt dads can feel about taking time for themselves, the pressure to maximize every moment with their kids, and why constantly hearing messages like “you only have so many summers left” can sometimes create more anxiety than connection. Thomas and Frankie also explore the difference between balance and alignment—and why a good week doesn't require every part of your life to receive equal attention. From there, the conversation goes deeper into self-awareness, negative self-talk, journaling, slowing down, walking barefoot in nature, fear, surrender, and what it means to become more present in your own life. In this episode: • Why it's okay to admit you don't want to be “Dad” for a minute • Recognizing when your emotional bandwidth is depleted • Self-care without the guilt • Why your kids don't need every available minute of your time • The pressure behind “you only have so many summers left” • Balance vs. alignment in work, family, relationships, and yourself • Doing a weekly check-in on what matters most • Why one bad parenting moment doesn't make you a bad father • Breaking the habit of labeling yourself after mistakes • Using journaling to unpack what's really bothering you • Slowing down and becoming more intentional • How fear can pull us away from the present moment • Surrendering some of the control we think we need • Building the kind of relationship with your kids that lasts into adulthood One of the biggest reminders from this conversation: You can have a s****y parenting moment without being a s****y parent. Acknowledge it. Repair it. Learn from it. And keep moving. Because the goal was never perfection. It's connection.
