    The Toronto Star Has a Cartoon Problem

    The Toronto Star Theo Moudakis trump monopoly cartoon which blames Canada's opposition leader for selling out the Gordie Howe Bridge to the Americans is clearly misinformation. The point of the Moudakis cartoon wasn't to inform, it was to tell readers how to interpret events. Political cartoons are not merely vehicles for propaganda, they are also framing devices. Cartoons are probably one of the worst types of political propaganda. I explain why in this show and look for explanations as to why our state funded news media is now hurting Canadian democracy.     Who Is Governor Carney For?

    On August 19, 2026 a 50% US tariff will be applied to Canadian Arts, Crafts, and Jewelry exports into the United States and this will destroy the arts sector in Canada. Will governor Carney do anything to challenge it? Will his government support artists and makers? Or will he continue to be a no-show at the negotiation table as our trade agreements expire and creative industries collapse? Will his government continue to pick and choose who gets grant support or funding or even awards and accolades based on race and identity, as is currently the case in the Canadian arts sector? Is Carney a governor or a pied piper or both? Will he do anything for Canadian artists at all or allow our art. crafts, and jewelry sector to completely collapse?     There Is Another Way: Making Art Without Social Media

    I hate social media, and I know you do too. As artists, we are being abused by social media platforms' billionaire, bunker-dwelling owners who shape, control, and monetize our art while giving nothing back. I've had enough of it. In this episode, I describe how I am refusing to use social media as the destination for my art. Instead, people will have to come to my website to see it. I am even putting extra effort into making it unshareable on social media. Why? Because I don't want deodorant ads running across my art while others monetize it. I am not even going to host my documentary series on YouTube because I have made a political decision not to host the videos on U.S.-owned platforms because they support the psychotic Trump government. As artists, we should stand up for our principles, improve the quality of our art, and protect it from tech-bro abuse and monetization. If my work becomes obscure because of this decision, that's fine, because I have never been happier about any decision in my life.     Getting Your Art Discovered on a Controlled Extractive Internet

    You see it now, don’t you? How AI slop is filling up social media platforms and pushing out authentic or human generated content. How can artists survive and communicate with potential customers when Google won’t tell customers where we are? I’ve thought about this topic for a long time, decades really, and have no guaranteed answers that will work for you. But here is what I am trying to do, my strategy for tiptoeing around the platforms while connecting directly with the people who want to see my art. In spite of the website being declared dead because of Google Zero (no referral traffic), I will build a webpage for my content, just like we did in the early days of the Internet. This will be the place to find my art, my photography. Not on Instagram, not on tiktok, not YouTube, but rather on our top level domains tribemagazine.com and tribe.ca . I am not going to host videos on YouTube because I don’t want deodorant or bubble tea ads running in front of or interrupting my art. Instead, I'm creating a series of short form documentary films about the photography of the rave and house music scenes in Canada in the 1990s and they will live on our web page, not on a third party platform like YouTube or meta, or even Vimeo, which now has new owners I explain other strategies to avoid social media platforms and how to leverage AI scraping for your benefit. It’s crazy out there, and while this may sound like throwing spaghetti at a wall, it just might work.     Use Small Scale Sound Design To Improve Your Art

    I've been using using synthesizers and audio recorders for the last 7 weeks to create mini audio soundtracks and sound effects for video productions and an upcoming monthly YouTube series on the birth of electronic music in Canada.     Make Your Own Artist Colony - Helicon

    Why artist colonies are important, how they form, why they move and change. I describe the very first artist colony, Helicon. I talk about modern artist colonies like Queen St. West in Toronto the 1980's and South Eastern Ontario in the late 2020's.
