Irish ghost stories with Adam, host of Houston Strange

This week on Tales, Trails & Taverns, we sit down with special guest Adam, a fellow podcast host with a deep interest in the strange, the historic, and the supernatural side of Ireland. In this interview-style episode, Adam takes us on a journey through Irish folklore, exploring the legends and cultural roots behind some of the island’s most famous supernatural figures. From the mischievous tales of Leprechaun to the chilling wails of the Banshee, we dig into how these stories developed, what they meant to the communities that told them, and why they continue to fascinate people today. But folklore isn’t the only mystery on the table. Adam also shares some of his own eerie experiences while exploring Ireland — including strange sounds in the woods, unexplained moments captured on footage, and the kind of unsettling encounters that make you question what might really be out there. Along the way we discuss folklore research, the historical context behind these legends, and how old stories often intersect with modern paranormal investigations. If you’re fascinated by ghost stories, ancient myths, and the deeper cultural history behind them, this episode is packed with legends, personal encounters, and the mysteries that still linger in Ireland’s landscape. Grab a drink and join us as we pull back the curtain on Irish folklore, supernatural encounters, and the timeless stories that refuse to fade. Carriage Inn and Saloon

This week on Tales, Trails & Taverns, Joe heads to historic North Kingstown to share his experience at the legendary Carriage Inn. What starts as a simple visit quickly turns into something much more memorable. Joe talks about how welcoming and friendly the staff were — eager to share not just the inn’s long history, but also some chilling photos and a video captured on the property. Are they tricks of the light… or something lingering from centuries past? Rob and Joe dive into the historic roots of the Carriage Inn, tracing its place along Post Road and discussing how buildings like this once served travelers making their way through colonial Rhode Island. With age comes atmosphere — and sometimes stories that refuse to fade. The conversation also turns to the night the team from Ghost Hunters — better known as TAPS — investigated the inn. What did they find? Did their evidence validate the local legends, or leave more questions than answers? From warm hospitality to cold spots and unexplained imagery, this episode blends personal experience, regional history, and televised paranormal investigation into one unforgettable stop along the trail. Pull up a chair, order a drink, and decide for yourself… is the Carriage Inn just historic — or still inhabited? Taunton State Hospital

This week on Tales, Trails & Taverns, Rob takes Joe deep into the shadowed history of one of New England’s most infamous institutions: Taunton State Hospital. Opened in 1854 as the State Lunatic Hospital at Taunton, the sprawling Kirkbride-style complex was once considered cutting-edge in the treatment of mental illness. Over the decades, its towering brick wards, overcrowded conditions, controversial treatments, and whispered rumors transformed it into something far darker in the public imagination. Rob walks Joe through the hospital’s history — from its early reform-era optimism to its decline, deinstitutionalization, and the eventual demolition of many of its original structures. But history books only tell part of the story. Long before fences went up and buildings came down, Taunton State Hospital became a rite of passage for local teens. Rob shares what it was like exploring the abandoned buildings that once stood on the grounds — shattered windows, peeling paint, long echoing corridors, and the uneasy feeling that someone might still be watching from the shadows. And then there were the tunnels. Connecting parts of the campus beneath the surface, the underground passageways carried steam lines — and stories. Rob recounts what it felt like descending into those dark, claustrophobic corridors as a teenager: the smell of damp concrete, the distant drip of water, the adrenaline of knowing you weren’t supposed to be there, and the creeping sense that the past hadn’t fully left. Was it just teenage nerves in an abandoned asylum… or something else? Join us as we explore the layered history, the urban exploration memories, and the lingering legends surrounding Taunton State Hospital — a place where architecture, tragedy, and curiosity collided. Turn down the lights… this one goes underground. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tales-trails-and-taverns-podcast--6437578/support. Valentines Horror Movie Review: Heart Eyes (2025)

This week on Tales, Trails & Taverns, Rob and Joe sit down to talk slashers, superstition, and summer camp legends as we review the 2025 horror film Heart Eyes. We break down what worked, what didn’t, and where Heart Eyes fits into the modern wave of Valentine’s Day–themed horror. From kills to callbacks, we dig into the movie’s inspirations and whether it earns a place among classic holiday slashers. We also discuss the origins of Friday the 13th. We explore the real-world origins of the superstition, tracing the fear back through history, folklore, and religious legend—and how that unlucky date became permanently linked to horror culture. We also head into the woods to talk about Friday the 13th and the real-life location that brought Camp Crystal Lake to life.  We discuss Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, the summer camp where the original film was shot, its history, and why it remains one of the most iconic filming locations in horror history. Grab a drink, lock the cabin door, and join us as love, luck, and legends collide—because some dates… and some places… were never meant to be romantic. Love, Loss, and Lingering Spirits | A Friday the 13th Special

With Friday the 13th falling just days before Valentine’s Day, Joe takes Rob on a darker journey through love stories that didn’t end in happily ever after—but may not have ended at all. In this episode, Joe shares three tragic love stories rooted in New England history and legend, where heartbreak, betrayal, and obsession may have left something behind. The first story brings us deep into the Freetown State Forest, to the cliffs of Assonet Ledge, where witnesses have reported seeing a mysterious Woman in White. Often referred to as the Lady of the Ledge, her origins are tangled in loss, sorrow, and the dangerous edge where love may have quite literally gone over the cliff. Next, the journey heads north to New Hampshire, and the haunting tale of Nancy Barton. After her lover steals her life savings and disappears, Nancy sets out into the wilderness in the dead of winter to chase him down. She never makes it back. To this day, hikers report strange sounds and unsettling feelings in the woods where she died—leading many to believe Nancy may still be searching. The final story takes us to Rhode Island, overlooking Narragansett Bay, where the tragic life of Hannah Robinson unfolds. A young woman who eloped against her father’s wishes, Hannah’s love leaves her abandoned, impoverished, and gravely ill. When she is finally brought home to reconcile with her family, she asks to stop one last time at her favorite spot overlooking the water. She dies shortly after. Today, the Hannah Robinson Tower on Tower Hill Road stands as a memorial to a love that cost everything. Three stories. Three broken hearts. And three places where love may still linger. This Valentine’s season, romance takes a back seat to tragedy—because some love stories don’t fade… they haunt. Profile Rock: History and Lore

In this episode, Rob takes the lead on a deep dive into Profile Rock in Assonet, Massachusetts—one of the most iconic and symbolically charged landmarks in the region. Often referred to as the “Old Man of the Bay,” Profile Rock has long been tied to Native American history and is deeply connected to the events of King Philip’s War, one of the bloodiest conflicts in early New England history. Rob explores the legend of Metacomet (King Philip), the significance of Profile Rock as a possible landmark and meeting place, and how it fits into the wider web of history and mystery surrounding the area. The conversation branches into nearby locations heavy with lore and tragedy, including Freetown State Forest and Anawan’s Rock in Rehoboth, drawing lines between battle sites, sacred ground, and places that continue to carry an unsettling weight. Blending historical context with regional legend, this episode examines how war, displacement, and memory have shaped the land—and why these places still resonate today. It’s a journey into the heart of southern Massachusetts, where history is etched into stone and the past never feels entirely at rest. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/queer/the-stutterer-queer-horror-trilogy?ref=thanks-copy RMS HEATING AND COOLING - Updated February 2026 - Providence, Rhode Island - Heating & Air Conditioning/HVAC - Phone Number - Yelp  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tales-trails-and-taverns-podcast--6437578/support. Charles Island: cursed by greed and gold.

In this solo episode, Joe ventures into the eerie history and living legend of Charles Island in Milford, Connecticut—a place only reachable by a vanishing land bridge and steeped in centuries of curses, pirate lore, and whispered warnings. Drawing from firsthand experience, Joe recounts his journey across the tombolo at low tide, exploring the island’s overgrown trails, forgotten wells, and crumbling remnants of past settlements. Along the way, he unpacks the legends that made Charles Island infamous: the curse of the Paugusset tribe, Captain Kidd’s rumored buried treasure, tales of lost Aztec gold, and the long list of failed ventures that seem to prove the island doesn’t want to be tamed. From colonial land deals to mysterious fires and abandoned dreams, this episode blends history, folklore, and boots-on-the-ground storytelling. Was the island truly cursed—or just shaped by greed, regret, and the rising tide? Either way, Joe’s warning stands: watch your footing, respect the past, and never ignore the water on your way back. The Carl Drew Murders | Fall River & Freetown State Forest

Rob takes Joe deep into one of the darkest and least-discussed crime sprees in Massachusetts history: the Carl Drew murders. Between 1979 and 1980, a series of brutal killings unfolded in and around Fall River and the Freetown State Forest Reservation—an area already steeped in violent history, whispers of cult activity, and long-standing paranormal lore. Rob lays out the timeline of the crimes, the victims, and the disturbing patterns that emerged, while examining how the dense woods of Freetown became both a dumping ground and a shield for violence. The conversation explores the investigation, the fear that gripped the region, and how these murders further cemented the forest’s reputation as one of the most unsettling places in New England. This episode focuses on the real-world horror—where human brutality, isolation, and history intersect—and asks how much of the forest’s dark legend was shaped by very real bloodshed.
