E 371: You Are More Than Your Diagnosis: BPD, Childhood Trauma & Reclaiming Your Voice with Dene Dubois

What happens when a diagnosis finally gives you an explanation for why you've struggled—but then starts becoming another label you carry? In this jpowerful episode, I sit down with Dene Dubois, for an incredibly open conversation about borderline personality disorder, childhood trauma, abandonment, trust, shame, relationships, and what it means to take your personal power back. Dene shares his experience growing up in a deeply dysfunctional home with a mother struggling with bipolar disorder and a father dealing with alcoholism and compulsive gambling. He also opens up about receiving a BPD diagnosis at age 50 and the complicated relationship he's had with that label. We talk about something I see so often in my own work with adult children: the fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting others, intense emotional reactions, people pleasing, and that immediate assumption of “What did I do wrong?” when someone pulls away. Denis gives a powerful real-life example of how something as simple as an unanswered message can activate those old fears. But this conversation goes far beyond a diagnosis. We explore the difference between understanding a label and becoming the label, why shame doesn't create healing, and how the things we once viewed as weaknesses can sometimes become part of our purpose. Dene has taken his lived experience and created BPD Raw as a place where people can speak honestly about mental health without hiding behind clinical language or stigma. His message at the end of our conversation says it beautifully: Never let someone silence your voice. If you've ever felt defined by a diagnosis, your childhood, your mistakes, or someone else's opinion of you, this conversation is for you. 🔗 CONNECT WITH DENE DUBOISBPD Raw Website: BPD Raw Facebook: Follow BPD Raw on Facebook Instagram: Follow Dene on Instagram YouTube: BPD Raw on YouTube Dene also discusses his books The Places I Didn't Belong and Maybe I Did Belong, Hey there, I’m so glad you’re here and tuning in! E 370: Tammy's Takes #45: What If They Misunderstand You?

Have you ever set a boundary... and then immediately felt the need to explain it? And then explain your explanation? Maybe you soften what you said, send another text, replay the conversation for hours, or start wondering whether you did something wrong. For many adult children of dysfunctional families, being misunderstood doesn’t just feel uncomfortable. It can feel unsafe. In this week’s Tammy’s Takes, I build on one powerful idea from my conversation with Nima Rahmany: “Learn how to expand your capacity to be misunderstood.” That stopped me. Because so many of us grew up learning to monitor everyone else’s moods, reactions, and opinions. We became experts at reading the room, keeping the peace, people pleasing, explaining ourselves, and making sure everyone else was okay. Eventually, another person’s perception of us can become connected to our own sense of safety. So when someone is disappointed in us, disagrees with us, or thinks we're selfish, our immediate response can be: “I need to fix this.” But do you? In this episode, we explore the difference between healthy communication and overexplaining from fear. I talk about why someone being disappointed in your boundary doesn’t automatically mean your boundary is wrong, why repairing a relationship is very different from abandoning yourself to save it, and how self-trust begins to grow when you stop needing everyone else to agree with your choices. I’ll also give you one question to start asking yourself when you notice that urge to explain: “Am I explaining because this information is actually necessary... or because I’m afraid of what they’ll think about me if I don’t?” Healing isn't about becoming someone who doesn't care what anyone thinks. It's about becoming grounded enough in who you are that someone else's opinion doesn't determine how you feel about yourself. Because maybe freedom isn't getting everyone to understand you. Maybe freedom is understanding yourself enough that you no longer need everyone else to. 💜 DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?If you recognize yourself in the people pleasing, overexplaining, fear of disappointing others, difficulty setting boundaries, or constantly worrying about what other people think of you, I'd love to talk with you. E 369: Becoming Trigger Proof/ Guest Nima Rahmany

Why do some relationships feel safe while others leave you anxious, overwhelmed, or constantly questioning yourself? The answer may have less to do with your partner—and far more to do with the attachment patterns your nervous system learned in childhood. In this episode of the Adult Child of Dysfunction Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Nima Rahmany, creator of the Becoming Trigger Proof® methodology, to explore how unresolved attachment wounds continue to influence our adult relationships, emotional reactions, boundaries, and sense of self. Through his own personal story and years of clinical experience, Dr. Nima explains why healing isn't about becoming "triggerless." It's about learning how to regulate your nervous system, repair relationships, and respond instead of react. Together, we discuss why conflict itself isn't the problem—it's the lack of repair afterward that slowly erodes trust. We also explore anxious and avoidant attachment, emotional attunement, people pleasing, codependency, childhood survival patterns, and how the nervous system quietly shapes the way we show up in every relationship. One of my favorite takeaways from this conversation is the reminder that you can't think yourself to safety—your body has to feel safe first. That shift alone has the power to change the way you approach healing, parenting, communication, and connection. 🎁 Free Gift from Dr. NimaIf you're curious about your own attachment style, Dr. Nima is offering his Attachment Style Assessment completely free. 👉 Take the free assessment here: https://go.drnima.com/it11r You can also learn more about Dr. Nima and his Becoming Trigger Proof® methodology at: 🌐 https://becometriggerproof.com/ If you've ever wondered why you keep repeating the same relationship patterns or why certain situations trigger such intense emotional reactions, this episode will help you understand what's happening beneath the surface—and remind you that healing is possible. E 368: Tammy's Takes #44: Did Childhood Trauma Become Your Personality?

Have you ever stopped to wonder if the person you think you are... is actually the person you had to become to survive? In this week's Tammy's Takes, I'm reflecting on one of the most thought-provoking ideas from my conversation with author Megan DeMatteo, and taking it one step further. As adult children, many of us spend years believing that our people-pleasing, perfectionism, anxiety, hypervigilance, or difficulty trusting others is simply part of our personality. But what if those behaviors aren't your identity at all? What if they're survival strategies your nervous system developed to keep you safe? In this episode, I invite you to look beneath those patterns and ask a powerful question that I often use with my coaching clients: "Who would I be if I no longer believed I had to survive?" Together, we'll explore how childhood experiences shape the beliefs we carry into adulthood, why those beliefs often feel like who we are, and how healing begins when we separate our authentic self from the adaptations that once protected us. I'll also guide you through a simple reflective exercise that can help you reconnect with the person underneath the fear, the people-pleasing, the perfectionism, and the constant need to prove your worth. If you've ever felt like you've lost yourself while trying to keep everyone else happy, this episode is for you. My hope is that you'll walk away with more compassion for yourself, a deeper understanding of your survival patterns, and the reminder that you are not broken—you adapted. If you're ready to go deeper, I'd love to help you continue your healing journey. E 367: Inner Child Healing with Megan DeMatteo

Have you ever wondered why it's so hard to know who you really are after growing up in a dysfunctional family? Why setting boundaries feels uncomfortable, emotions feel overwhelming, or you find yourself living from survival instead of authenticity? In this episode of the Adult Child of Dysfunction Podcast, I sit down with writer and author Megan DeMatteo to explore the healing power of journaling, inner child work, and learning to reconnect with the parts of ourselves that had to adapt just to survive. Growing up with an alcoholic father, Megan shares how writing became much more than creative expression—it became the bridge that helped her understand her childhood, uncover the different "inner children" she had developed for protection, and begin reclaiming the person she truly is. Together, we talk about why so many adult children struggle to trust themselves, how survival adaptations often become mistaken for personality, and why healing isn't about becoming someone new—it's about remembering who you were before trauma taught you who you had to be. We also discuss emotional sobriety, dissociation, perfectionism, identity, and why journaling can become one of the most powerful healing tools available. If you've ever wondered why you feel like you're constantly performing, staying strong, or taking care of everyone else while losing yourself in the process, I think this conversation will deeply resonate with you. More importantly, I hope it reminds you that healing isn't about fixing what's broken—it's about reconnecting with the parts of yourself that have been waiting to be seen all along. E 366: Tammys Takes #43: Healing Isn't A Race

Have you ever listened to a podcast, read a book, or had a conversation that unexpectedly left you feeling anxious, emotional, or overwhelmed? Maybe your first thought was, "Why am I still getting triggered?" or "Shouldn't I be further along by now?" If so, this week's Tammy's Takes is for you. Inspired by my conversation with Rachel, I wanted to remind you of something we often forget: healing isn't a competition, and your nervous system sets the pace. Every person's journey is different, and comparing your healing to someone else's only creates more pressure, shame, and self-judgment. In this episode, I share one of my favorite tools that I teach coaching clients: Notice. Name. Need. Instead of criticizing yourself for having a strong emotional reaction, you'll learn how to become curious about what your body is trying to communicate. We'll explore why healing isn't just an intellectual process, why your nervous system responds before your mind can explain what's happening, and how listening to yourself instead of pushing yourself is one of the greatest acts of self-trust. Most adult children grew up learning to ignore their own needs while focusing on everyone else's. Healing asks us to reverse that pattern—not by forcing ourselves to process everything at once, but by learning to pause, notice what's happening inside of us, and respond with compassion instead of criticism. If you've ever felt like you're falling behind in your healing journey, I hope this episode reminds you that you are not behind. You're exactly where you need to be. Healing doesn't happen by rushing through your pain. It happens one safe moment, one small act of self-awareness, and one compassionate choice at a time. E 365: You Can Heal After Trauma: PTSD, Self-Compassion & Finding Yourself Again with Rachel Buckmaster

What if healing from trauma isn't about becoming the person you were before it happened, but learning to understand and have compassion for the person you are today? In this episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction, I sit down with Rachel Buckmaster for an honest conversation about living with PTSD and what healing has actually looked like for her. Rachel was diagnosed with PTSD at 18 and has spent years working through her experiences with therapy, self-awareness, and more recently EMDR. But this conversation isn't about pretending that healing makes everything disappear. We talk about what happens when trauma shows up as perfectionism, overworking, shame, isolation, difficulty slowing down, and that constant feeling that you have something to prove. Rachel also shares one of the biggest lessons she's learned: sometimes being gentler with yourself actually helps you move forward more than constantly pushing yourself to "do better." In this episode, we talk about: • What PTSD can look like beyond the stereotypical flashback • Why trauma can stay with us long after the event is over • Rachel's experience with EMDR • How shame can fuel perfectionism and overworking • Why high-functioning doesn't always mean someone is okay • Learning to identify and name your emotions • The importance of self-compassion in trauma recovery • Why talking about what happened can help break isolation • Learning to become curious instead of judgmental about your reactions • Why healing doesn't have to happen overnight Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that there IS hope. Your childhood and your trauma may have shaped parts of who you became, but they do not have to define the rest of your life. You can understand yourself differently. You can learn new ways of responding. You can reconnect with yourself. And you can build a life beyond survival. E 364: Tammys Takes #42: Trauma Isn't the Event—It's the Aftermathaudio

Have you ever caught yourself wondering, "Was my childhood really that bad?" Maybe you've compared your experiences to others and convinced yourself that because someone else had it worse, your struggles today shouldn't matter. But what if that's the wrong question? In this week's Tammy's Takes, I'm reflecting on one of the most powerful moments from my conversation with trauma specialist Stacey Uhrig, who said, "Trauma isn't the event... it's the aftermath. It's the impact of what happened." That simple statement led me to ask a different question—one I ask nearly every coaching client I work with: Is it still affecting the way you live today? In this episode, I'll walk you through a simple but powerful coaching exercise to help you uncover the beliefs that may have formed during childhood and quietly shaped the way you see yourself today. Together, we'll explore how experiences from years ago can continue to influence your relationships, boundaries, confidence, people-pleasing, perfectionism, anxiety, and even your nervous system. Healing isn't about deciding whether your story was "bad enough." It's about understanding the meaning your younger self attached to those experiences and recognizing that the survival patterns that once protected you don't have to define your future. If you've ever struggled with feeling like you're not enough, believing you have to earn love, or constantly putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own, this episode will help you connect the dots with compassion instead of judgment. Because when you understand why your behavior makes sense, you can finally begin to change it. I actually think this is the "voice" we want for Tammy's Takes going forward. The guest episodes are about the conversation. The Tammy's Takes summaries should feel like you're inviting someone into a short coaching session. They should leave readers thinking, "She understands me. I need to listen to this." That's the feeling that turns casual listeners into loyal subscribers—and eventually into coaching clients. yes, that is exactly what i am going for. I made the ending feel less "salesy" and more like a natural continuation of the conversation. Someone who just had an "aha" moment should feel invited—not pitched. Captivate Episode SummaryHave you ever found yourself wondering, "Was my childhood really that bad?" Maybe you've compared your experiences to someone else's and convinced yourself that because they had it worse, your struggles today shouldn't matter. But what if that's the wrong question? In this week's Tammy's Takes, I'm reflecting on one of the most powerful moments from my conversation with trauma specialist Stacey Uhrig, who said, "Trauma isn't the event... it's the aftermath. It's the impact of what happened." That simple statement inspired me to ask a different question—one I ask nearly every coaching client I work with: Is it still affecting the way you live today? In this episode, I'll guide you through a simple coaching exercise designed to help you uncover the beliefs you may have formed in childhood—beliefs that can quietly shape your relationships, confidence, boundaries, people-pleasing, perfectionism, and even the way your nervous system responds to stress. Healing isn't about deciding whether your story was "bad enough." It's about understanding the meaning your younger self attached to those experiences and recognizing that the survival patterns that once protected you don't have to define your future. If you've ever struggled with feeling like you're not enough, believing you have to earn love, constantly putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own, or never quite feeling safe to be yourself, I think this conversation will resonate with you. My hope is that you'll walk away with greater compassion for yourself and one simple step toward healing.
