    154. The Trust Gap: A Lack of Self-Trust Is Destroying OT Dreams

How can an occupational therapist have 20 or 30 years of experience and still not trust themselves enough to pursue the business idea they really want? Beki sees this constantly. Brilliant, experienced OTs with ideas that could genuinely change lives, but they are still researching, overthinking, looking for permission or convincing themselves they need another qualification before they can begin. In this episode of the OT Yourself to Freedom Podcast, Beki explores the self-trust problem hiding underneath perfectionism, procrastination and imposter syndrome. She looks at why occupational therapy training can make us brilliant clinicians while also teaching us to seek evidence, validation and permission before acting. You’ll hear why waiting until you feel confident has things the wrong way round, how small actions build self-trust, and why your next step might not require more research at all. If you’re an OT with a business idea, a bigger vision or a change you’ve been putting off for far too long, this episode might make you uncomfortable. And that might be exactly why you need to hear it. Connect with Beki Are you ready to leave the whinger mindset behind and embrace your inner go-getter? 153. Successful OT Practices Are One Funding Letter Away From Broke

You can have a full caseload, a waiting list and a successful OT private practice, and still be one funding change away from a serious problem. In this episode of the OT Yourself to Freedom Podcast, Beki Eakins talks about something she is seeing again and again with Occupational Therapy business owners across Australia, the UK and the US. NDIS changes. Frozen therapy rates. Insurance restrictions. Commissioning changes. Rising costs. More paperwork. Smaller margins. The problem is not that these OTs are bad at business. Many of them are incredibly successful. The problem is that too much of their income is controlled by somebody else. Beki explores why being fully booked does not automatically mean your OT business is secure, what concentration risk looks like in an Occupational Therapy private practice, and why every OT business owner should be thinking about creating at least one income stream that a funder cannot control. She also shares practical ways to start thinking differently about your existing OT skills, including private-pay services, high-ticket offers and opportunities that sit outside the traditional funding model. In this episode, Beki talks about: Why successful OT private practices can still be financially fragile The risks of relying heavily on NDIS, insurance or other funding bodies Why a full waiting list does not always mean you have a safe business How to work out your biggest concentration risk Finding the support your clients need that funding currently does not cover Creating private-pay and high-ticket offers using your existing OT expertise Why sales and marketing are important skills for Occupational Therapists in business How to start creating income you have more control over If you run an OT private practice, clinic or independent Occupational Therapy business, this episode will help you look at your business differently and ask a very important question: How much of my income do I actually control?   Connect with Beki Are you ready to leave the whinger mindset behind and embrace your inner go-getter? 152. Can You Start an OT Business Straight Out of University? With Rebecca Haythorne

Every newly qualified OT hears some version of the same advice. Get a few years under your belt. Build your clinical experience. Wait until you know what you are doing. But wait for what, exactly? And who decided? In this episode Beki Eakins is joined by Rebecca Haythorne, Senior Lecturer and Practice Placement Tutor on the MSc and BSc Occupational Therapy pre-registration programmes at Leeds Beckett University. Rebecca moved into academia from clinical practice, having qualified as a mature student after a first degree in psychology and criminology and a spell working as an OT assistant. She is also currently working towards a PhD at the University of York. Which makes her a useful person to ask, because she is the one preparing students for practice and watching where they actually end up. The conversation covers what has changed in OT education, why placements now put students into settings that barely existed a decade ago, and what that means for the shape of a career. It also covers the part nobody puts in a prospectus: how much of the "wait your turn" message is genuine professional caution and how much is institutional habit that nobody has revisited. Beki is honest about her own route. She qualified, went into the system, stayed thirteen years and left after burning out. Whether she would do it differently now is a question she answers directly. In this episode: Whether a newly qualified OT can realistically start a business, and what has to be in place first Why "get experience first" is sometimes right and sometimes just repeated How contemporary placements are changing what students expect from a career The rise of hybrid roles that sit between traditional practice and something of your own Why mature students often move faster, and what the rest of us can learn from that Where the professional responsibilities sit, and why building a business does not mean abandoning them What Rebecca sees in students now that she did not see in her own cohort This one is for OT students, newly qualified OTs, and anyone further along who has quietly wondered whether they waited longer than they needed to. 151. The 12 Hour Working Week, A Manifesto for OTs Who Keep Getting Told to Do More

Beki Eakins works about 12 hours a week. And she still feels guilty about it. Not because the business is struggling. It's growing, her clients are getting results, and she's built the life she wanted. But she'll open her diary, see the gaps, and hear the voice saying you should be doing more. This episode started as therapy for herself. It turned into an argument. Because the standard advice for growing a business is always the same: double the output, double the hours. Beki has tried it, repeatedly, and every time she burnt out and achieved nothing extra. She traces where the work harder belief came from, a father treated as a superhero for working himself into the ground, and what shifted it, from Tim Ferriss to the world schooling families she met travelling, including one father supporting his family on four hours a week. Then the honest breakdown. Her 12 hours, line by line. Client support, group calls, sales, team, admin. And the weeks it all falls apart, like the fortnight with a hospital appointment, a graduation, seventy Vikings at the house and about five hours of work done. That happens at least once a month, and building it into the average instead of feeling shame was the real breakthrough. You will hear: The full breakdown of what 12 hours a week actually contains Why the business grew while she was in Australia working ten hours a week What Stanford research says about output past 50 hours a week Why she thinks full time should mean 20 hours and part time 12 The six months of doing nothing, and what it taught her If your business is quietly becoming a second job with worse pay and no annual leave, that's not commitment. It's a design flaw. And design flaws can be fixed. One note: this is not a prescription. There are seasons where pushing hard is right. The argument is against doing it permanently by default, without ever choosing it. Connect with Beki Are you ready to leave the whinger mindset behind and embrace your inner go-getter? 150. The Basket Weavers Who Forgot to Weave, Why OTs Burn Out and What Actually Fixes It

Occupational Therapists are the profession built on one idea. Meaningful occupation is medicine. We prescribe it every day. We know the theory works. So why are we burning out faster than almost anyone? In this episode of the OT Yourself to Freedom Podcast, Beki Eakins goes after the question most of us avoid. What happens when the profession of meaningful occupation stops doing anything meaningful for itself? It starts at a leaving do. Another OT walking out of the NHS, this one to open a bakery, icing the cakes for her own goodbye party. That moment is where this entire brand began. Because Beki noticed something. OTs are the profession most likely to OT themselves right out of the door. And the woman leaving to bake was not failing. She was finally applying the model to her own life. The question is why she had to leave to do it.   You will hear: Why burnout is not really about working too much, and what it is actually about The bakery leaving do that started OT Yourself to Freedom Occupational imbalance, occupational deprivation and occupational alignment, applied to you rather than your clients Why mastery leisure beats rest for recovery, and the research behind it How to tell whether your daily occupations match who you actually are inside Why Churchill picked up a paintbrush at forty, and what he understood about rest How to build a business around your leisure rather than fitting leisure into the gaps A three step challenge to do this week, not one day If you are an Occupational Therapist heading towards burnout, thinking about leaving clinical practice, or building a business that is quietly turning into a second job with worse pay and no annual leave, this one is for you. We are the profession of meaningful occupation. It is time we stopped prescribing it and started living it. 149. Sales for Occupational Therapists, Why OTs Fear Selling and How to Fix It (with Rob Higton)

Selling makes most Occupational Therapists deeply uncomfortable. Not because they lack expertise, but because they fear sounding pushy, dread talking about money, and worry about being judged for charging properly for their skills. In this episode of the OT Yourself to Freedom Podcast, Beki Eakins is joined by sales coach Rob Higton to unpack why so many OTs hold themselves back from building profitable online businesses, and how a shift in mindset around sales changes everything. Rob shares his route from traditional face to face selling into high ticket online sales, and the principles behind it. Build trust. Create a genuine connection. Enrol the right clients without pressure, scripts or manipulation. Ethical selling is not about convincing anyone of anything. It is about helping the right people solve a problem they are already trying to solve. Beki and Rob get into something that catches a lot of OTs off guard. We are trained communicators. We are exceptional at rapport, listening and clinical reasoning. So why does a discovery call still feel so awkward? The answer sits somewhere between imposter syndrome, professional conditioning and a quiet belief that our expertise is not worth paying for. 148 What Makes an OT Brand Stand Out in a Crowded Market

Think the occupational therapy market is too crowded? Think again. In this episode of OT Yourself to Freedom, Beki Eakins unpicks why so many occupational therapists believe their niche is saturated, and why that belief is usually a trick of the algorithm rather than a fact about the market. If you are an OT building a private practice, launching a coaching programme, or trying to work out how to market your services without sounding like everyone else, this one is for you. We cover: Why your social media feed is a filter bubble, not a census, and how it distorts your view of competition in the OT business space. Beki draws on Eli Pariser's work on filter bubbles to explain why "everyone is already doing this" is almost always your own algorithm reflecting your interests back at you. The story of the ninety-year-old woman in Austria, and what it taught Beki about clinical bias, warped sampling, and the assumptions quietly running your business decisions. Ninety-six per cent of older people in the UK live in their own communities, not in care homes, yet hospital-based OTs almost never see them. How to define your uniqueness properly. Not a new logo, not a colour palette, but the deep alignment work that makes an OT brand magnetic. Purpose, childhood patterns, money stories, and Human Design, and how those threads get woven into your offer creation and marketing. Why professional-sounding copy repels clients, and how to write like a human being while staying compliant as a registered OT. Real before and after examples of occupational therapy marketing copy, plus a book recommendation from copywriter Mish Slade. Why tying your business to a deeper mission changes everything, and why occupational therapists are, at heart, hope givers. Featuring the neuroscience of emotional decision-making from Antonio Damasio and Gerald Zaltman, and Charles Snyder's hope theory. If you have been holding back because the market feels full, this episode will show you the gap you are standing in without realising it.
