Why Market Predictions Are Useless (Proof in 3 Days)

Quick question for you. If you called five different financial professionals this week and asked the same thing — "Hey, what do you think the market's gonna do?" — how many different answers would you get? Five. Five completely different answers. And every single one would sound completely confident. But I don't even need five advisors to prove it. I can prove it with one newsletter. August 16th: "Don't buy into the recession doom and gloom." August 19th: "A storm is brewing in the stock market." Same newsletter. Same writer. Three days apart. So which is it? Here's the secret nobody in this industry wants to say out loud: they don't know. They're guessing. And they're not lying to you exactly — they genuinely believe what they're writing in the moment. They just don't actually know for sure. Two things worth knowing: 1. Even the greatest stock picker of a generation couldn't pick a successor who could beat the market. Peter Lynch beat the S&P 500 in 83% of his 12 years at the Fidelity Magellan Fund. Remarkable. But his handpicked successors ran the fund for 73 months combined and beat the S&P 500 in 39 of them — 53% of the time. Statistically, that's a coin flip. So when your guy tells you they know where the market's headed next quarter, think about Peter Lynch. 2. Once enough of your income is guaranteed, the headlines stop mattering. This is the whole point. Once enough of your income is guaranteed, you're not withdrawing so much from your portfolio — and you can let the rest of your money be as aggressive or as passive as you want. In a worst-case market using S&P 500 returns back to 2000, the portfolio fully exposed runs into real problems. Add the guaranteed income, and it's still fully funded with money left over. In a best-case market going back to 1995, the two are neck and neck. Zero opportunity cost, and no babysitting. You cannot control the market. You cannot control inflation. You cannot control how long your retirement needs to last. But you can control how much of your income is guaranteed.

Sequence of Returns Risk: The Hidden Threat to Your Retirement

Last week, Wall Street got a wake-up call. The Nasdaq had its worst five-day stretch since June, the fear index spiked over 34%, and one of the hottest AI companies out there watched investors demand insurance against its own debt defaulting. I'm not here to tell you the sky is falling. I'm also not here to tell you everything is fine. What I am here to tell you is that there's an important lesson buried in last week's chaos — and it applies directly to anyone within 5 to 10 years of retirement. In this episode, I break down: Why hot inflation data, credit stress in AI infrastructure, and a market propped up by just 10 stocks created the exact kind of environment that has triggered trouble before What sequence of returns risk actually is, and why it's the single biggest threat to a retirement plan — not "the market went down," but "the market went down right when you started pulling money out" Why this matters enormously if you're retired or near retirement, but barely matters at all if you're still working and contributing The simple idea behind the Atlas Annuity Strategy: guarantee the income you need to live on, so a bad headline can never dictate whether you can afford to retire or stay retired If you've ever wondered, "If the market has a rough stretch the day after I retire, would my income survive it?" — this episode is for you. $7,700 to $16,500/Year: The Annuity That Pays You More Just for Waiting

What if getting older didn't just bring wisdom and senior discounts, but actually made your retirement income bigger? In this episode, Marty breaks down a strategy where a 65-year-old who simply waits eight years to turn on guaranteed income doubles his lifetime payout, without adding another dollar or taking on more risk. Marty reviews the Midland National Income Planning Annuity, an A+ rated, employee-owned company with roots back to 1906. Unlike most income annuities that only step up your payment on your policy anniversary, this one increases your guaranteed lifetime income every single birthday, by 10% compounding for the first 10 years. In this episode, you'll learn: Why a $100,000 premium at age 65 pays under $7,700/year, but waiting until 73 pays nearly $16,500/year for life How the GLWB (guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit) actually works under the hood What makes Midland's birthday-based step-up different from every other income rider on the market The built-in flexibility: 5% penalty-free withdrawals from day one, a nursing home waiver, and the LPA multiplier that can double your income if you need help with daily living activities The real cost of the rider, and why it's structured differently (and arguably more fairly) than most competitors As always, Marty breaks down the good, the bad, and the ugly so you can decide if a strategy like this fits your personal retirement picture, not just pitch you the "best annuity out there." The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Annuity Surrender Charges

Have you ever looked at an annuity illustration and seen a chart labeled "surrender schedule" and thought, wait... is my money trapped? In this episode, Marty Becker breaks down exactly what surrender charges are, why insurance companies build them into annuities, and why they're actually more forgiving than people assume. Marty walks through real numbers showing how a surrender schedule works, why it's actually more flexible than a bank CD, and why every annuity discloses a Minimum Guaranteed Surrender Value (MGSV) — something stocks and bonds never tell you upfront. He also covers when surrender charges can become a real problem (hint: it's a planning issue, not a product flaw), plus the key exceptions that let you access your money penalty-free, including terminal illness, nursing home confinement, death benefits, and bailout provisions. In this episode, you'll learn: What a surrender schedule actually is and how the declining penalty works year by year Why annuities are more forgiving than bank CDs when you need extra money What the MGSV is and why no other investment discloses this in advance The real reason surrender charges exist — and why it's not the annuity company keeping your money hostage The industry rule of thumb for how much of your money should ever go into an annuity The exceptions that let you access 100% of your funds penalty-free This episode is for educational purposes only and is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or transfer any security or insurance product. What's the Best Annuity? Is the Wrong Question

Every week, Marty Becker gets asked the same question: "What's the best annuity out there?" His answer never changes — there isn't one, because it depends entirely on the person asking. In this episode, Marty Becker, owner and founder of Atlas Financial Strategies in St. Louis, Missouri, breaks down the exact five-step process he uses with nearly every client: the Atlas Annuity Strategy. Rather than leading with a product recommendation, Marty walks listeners through why the "one-size-fits-all" approach used at most dinner seminars is a mistake — and what a personalized, gap-focused strategy looks like instead. Listeners will learn: Why education always comes before any product discussion How a 30,000-foot overview uncovers hidden gaps in a retirement plan — and why sometimes the answer is "you don't need anything" A real case study of a couple who felt fully covered by a pension and Social Security, but overlooked a critical survivorship gap that could have cost them 45% of their income Why unrealistic return assumptions can turn a "bulletproof" retirement plan into a fantasy How to control what's actually controllable in retirement — guaranteed income versus market risk This episode is for anyone who's been pitched an annuity based on a flashy bonus or high cap rate, and wants to understand what a genuinely personalized retirement strategy looks like before making a decision. As always, this episode is for educational purposes only and is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or transfer any security or insurance product.
