#137 How to Restore Intimacy in Your Marriage

What happens when you still love your spouse, but you don’t really like your marriage anymore? After years of raising children, managing a home, working, solving problems, and navigating life together, many couples slowly become good partners but stop being lovers, friends, and deeply connected companions. That’s exactly where Jane Copier found herself in her own marriage. In this episode of Happy in the Middle, Jane shares the vulnerable story of realizing that she loved her husband but didn’t want to spend the rest of her life in the marriage they had created. Rather than settling for emotional distance, she and her husband made the courageous decision to let their old marriage die so they could intentionally create something new. Jane explores what it really takes to restore intimacy, including the often-overlooked connection between the thoughts we think about our spouse, the feelings those thoughts create, and the actions we take toward them. You’ll discover why proximity isn’t intimacy, why resentment can change the way we see our spouse, and how becoming genuinely curious about the person your spouse has become can begin to bring aliveness back into your relationship. Most importantly, Jane offers hope: a cold marriage isn't necessarily a dead marriage. You may not be able to recreate the marriage you had when you were younger, but you can create a new marriage that is more intentional, honest, connected, playful, and intimate. In this episode, you'll learn: Why loving your spouse and liking your marriage can be two very different things What “marriage drift” can look like in everyday life Why proximity alone doesn't create intimacy How our thoughts and stories about our spouse influence our desire to turn toward them How resentment can become the lens through which we see our partner The difference between positive thinking and choosing more generous, truthful thoughts Why emotional intimacy requires honesty, curiosity, vulnerability, and presence How physical and sexual intimacy can grow from emotional connection Why the goal isn't to get your “old marriage” back How to begin creating a new and more alive marriage together If you've been thinking, “This is us,” Jane invites you to join her free Marriage Masterclass, Why Good Couples Slowly Grow Apart, where she'll unpack why loving couples drift apart, and the simple habits that can help them find each other again. #136 Rebuilding Friendship in Your Marriage, How to Feel Close Again

Have you ever looked at your husband and thought, “I love him… but I don't know if I actually like him anymore?” Maybe you still love each other, but somewhere along the way, your marriage became more about managing life than enjoying life together. Between kids, work, schedules, responsibilities, bills, and the endless demands of daily life, you may find yourself wondering: When did we stop being friends? In this episode, Christian Marriage Coach Jane Copier shares a powerful perspective on how to rebuild friendship and emotional connection in your marriage. You'll learn why the way you feel about your spouse is deeply influenced by the thoughts you repeatedly think about them, -and how the stories you tell yourself can either create distance or help you reconnect. This is not about pretending your marriage is perfect or ignoring real problems. It's about becoming aware of negative thought patterns, choosing to see the whole person you married, and intentionally creating new opportunities for fondness, admiration, curiosity, laughter, and connection. In this episode, you'll learn: Why friendship is one of the foundations of a strong marriage How negative thought patterns can quietly create distance between you and your spouse Why collecting evidence against your husband can change the way you feel and behave toward him How your thoughts influence your emotions, actions, and the results you create in your relationship Why you don't have to wait for your spouse to change before you begin changing your own experience How to interrupt unhealthy relationship loops The difference between positive thinking and intentionally choosing another honest thought How to begin seeing your spouse through a lens of fondness, grace, and curiosity Why your spouse is both the person you married and someone who has continued to grow and change Simple questions that can help you get curious about each other again The Fondness & Admiration Reset you can begin practicing this week Why creating new experiences, laughter, novelty, and shared memories matters in marriage How one thought, one conversation, one date, or one act of kindness can begin rebuilding friendship Jane also shares the powerful reminder from Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loveth at all times.” What might change if you began intentionally looking for what you appreciate about your spouse instead of continually collecting evidence against them? Sometimes friendship doesn't return to a marriage in one grand moment. Sometimes it comes back one thought at a time. One expression of gratitude. One shared laugh. One memory. One conversation. One date.   MARRIAGE RESET 8 WEEK COACHING EXPERIENCE FOR COUPLES: If you and your spouse love each other but want more connection, better communication, a stronger friendship, deeper intimacy, and a healthier partnership, learn more about Marriage Reset, Jane's eight-week guided coaching experience for couples who want to find their way back to each other. #134 Emotional Safety, The Missing Ingredient in a Healthy Marriage

What does it really mean to feel emotionally safe with your spouse? In this episode, Jane Copier, The Christian Marriage Coach, explores why emotional safety is one of the most important foundations of a connected, intimate marriage.  Learn what emotional safety is, what couples often misunderstand about it, what destroys it, -and five practical ways to create more safety, trust, vulnerability, and connection in your relationship. Have you ever wanted to tell your spouse something important, -but stopped yourself because you were afraid of how they would respond? Maybe you're tired of the defensiveness, the arguments, or the feeling that you have to carefully choose your words. You may love each other deeply and still struggle to feel emotionally safe in your marriage. Emotional safety isn't about never disagreeing, avoiding difficult conversations, or making sure your spouse never feels uncomfortable. It's about creating a relationship where both people can be honest, vulnerable, imperfect, and different while still feeling loved, respected, and valued. Jane explores: What emotional safety actually means in marriage Why emotional safety is so important for intimacy and connection The difference between emotional safety and simply avoiding conflict Why couples sometimes stop being honest with one another How criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and withdrawal can erode emotional safety How to create a marriage where vulnerability is welcomed rather than punished Why repair matters when we've hurt each other How Christian principles like compassion, humility, gentleness, forgiveness, and love can strengthen emotional safety Practical ways to begin creating more emotional safety in your marriage You'll also receive a simple Marriage Reset exercise you can do with your spouse this week to begin creating more openness, trust, and connection. Because a strong marriage isn't one where you never hurt each other. It's one where you know how to find your way back to each other.   Free Marriage Masterclass   If this episode made you think, “Jane… this is us,” don't wait until your marriage is in crisis to invest in it.   Join Jane for her FREE Marriage Masterclass: Why Good Couples Slowly Grow Apart, and The Simple Habits That Help Them Find Each Other Again.   You'll discover why loving couples can lose emotional connection, the patterns that create distance, and simple shifts that can help you begin finding your way back to each other. #133 Why Good Couples Slowly Grow Apart, - And Why Your Marriage May Not be Broken at All

Have you ever looked at your spouse and thought, “I love you… so why don't I feel as close to you anymore?”   You're still married. You still love each other. You're raising your family, managing the household, making plans, and showing up for life. But somewhere along the way, something changed.   You haven't necessarily fallen out of love.   You may have simply drifted apart.   In this episode of Happy in the Middle, we explore why good couples can slowly become emotionally disconnected, -and why that doesn't necessarily mean your marriage is broken.   Drawing on research from relationship experts John and Julie Gottman, I'll explain the importance of bids for connection, the tiny everyday moments when we reach for our spouse's attention, affection, understanding, or companionship.    We'll also explore why so many marital problems aren't actually problems we can permanently solve… and why that's okay!   Most importantly, this episode offers hope. Your marriage may not be broken. You may simply need to find your way back to each other.   Listen in and learn practical ways to begin reconnecting, including one simple question you can ask your spouse today: “What is one tiny way I can turn toward my spouse?”   This episode is the first in a six-part series exploring the foundations of a deeply connected marriage, including emotional safety, communication, friendship, intentional connection, and shared values, vision, and purpose, -all grounded in faith in Jesus Christ.   Free Marriage Masterclass   If this episode made you think, “Jane… this is us,” don't wait until your marriage is in crisis to invest in it.   Join Jane for her FREE Marriage Masterclass: Why Good Couples Slowly Grow Apart   You'll discover why loving couples can lose emotional connection, the patterns that create distance, and simple shifts that can help you begin finding your way back to each other. #130. How to Increase Your Love-Ability

Love is something we all crave, -but what if we’ve been thinking about it backwards? In this episode, we explore one of the most life-changing emotional skills you can develop: your love-ability, -your ability to create, feel, and give love on purpose. Many of us have been conditioned to believe love comes from other people, -their approval, affection, appreciation, or behavior. But that mindset leaves us emotionally dependent and waiting for others to.  Today  we unpack a more empowering truth: love is not something you wait for, it’s something you practice. You’ll learn: Why love is a skill, not just an emotion How judgment, pride, and self-protection block love Why withholding love hurts you more than anyone else How boundaries and love can coexist beautifully Practical ways to increase compassion and emotional connection How gratitude and receiving love deepen relationships Why loving on purpose creates greater peace, resilience, and joy Whether you’re struggling in marriage, parenting, family relationships, or simply wanting to feel more connected and alive, this episode will help you open your heart and build greater emotional freedom. This is the final episode before summer break, and it’s one close to my heart.
