Father Wounds, Grief & the Adoption She Never Expected | Julie Busler

Send us Fan Mail Julie lost her mother to cancer at 19 and her father to suicide at 27. For years, she survived by pushing down her emotions while trying to faithfully follow Jesus, raise a family, and serve in ministry. Eventually, the trauma she had never processed caught up with her, leading Julie to seek professional help and begin naming wounds she hadn't previously known how to describe. Julie shares how counseling helped her understand emotional neglect, abandonment, attachment, and the ways childhood wounds had affected her relationship with God. She also explains why getting professional help does not mean we lack faith—and how Scripture, counseling, community, and honest lament can all be part of the healing journey. We also unpack one of the practical teachings from Julie's book Hopeful Sorrow: the biblical practice of lament. Using Psalm 13, Julie walks through four simple steps: Turn to God in faith.Tell Him honestly how you feel.Ask Him boldly for help.Choose to trust His character even before you know the outcome. Then Julie shares an extraordinary chapter of redemption she never expected. After years of identifying herself as an adult orphan and trusting God as a Father to the fatherless, a longtime friendship developed into a mother-daughter relationship—and Julie was legally adopted as an adult. Her story is a beautiful reminder that God may still be writing chapters we haven't even thought to ask Him for. If you've experienced father wounds, childhood trauma, grief, abandonment, emotional neglect, suicide loss, or difficulty seeing God as a loving Father, this conversation is for you. Father Wounds: How Do You Trust God When Your Father Hurt You? | Kia Stephens

Send us Fan Mail How do you trust God as a good Father when your earthly father was absent, emotionally unavailable, abusive, or unable to give you the love you needed? In this powerful episode of The Redeemed Podcast, Lauren Burns sits down with author and speaker Kia Stephens for an honest conversation about father wounds, forgiveness, healing, childhood wounds, and learning to trust God as our Heavenly Father. Kia grew up in the church, but as she entered adulthood, she began wrestling with a difficult question: If God is a Father to the fatherless, what does that actually mean when you've experienced the pain of an absent father? Kia shares the seemingly ordinary moment involving a bookshelf that uncovered years of hidden pain, how father wounds affected her relationships and need for validation, and how our relationship with our earthly father can influence the way we view God. Lauren and Kia also talk honestly about biblical forgiveness—what forgiveness is, what it is NOT, why forgiveness and healthy boundaries can coexist, and why healing is often a journey rather than a single moment. One of Kia's most powerful realizations: “I failed to realize that while I was pursuing my biological father, God had been pursuing me.” If you've struggled with father wounds, childhood wounds, unforgiveness, abandonment, or trusting God after painful experiences, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we talk about: • Recognizing father wounds you didn't know you carried • How an absent father can affect identity and relationships • Searching for validation when a father's love is missing • How our earthly father can influence the way we see God • Wrestling honestly with God • Learning to trust God as a good Father • What forgiveness is—and what it isn't • Why forgiveness and healthy boundaries can coexist • How God can redeem our deepest wounds • Recognizing the ways God has been pursuing us all along 📖 OVERCOMING FATHER WOUNDS — KIA STEPHENS Kia Stephens is the author of Overcoming Father Wounds, a biblical and practical resource for women seeking healing from the wounds left by an absent, distant, or difficult earthly father. How do you forgive someone when what they did was truly wrong?

Send us Fan Mail What are you still carrying because you believe you have a right to carry it? Anger. Resentment. Betrayal. Father wounds. An apology you never received. Years you can't get back. In this solo episode of The Redeemed Podcast, Lauren Burns talks honestly about biblical forgiveness and what it means to surrender anger and resentment without pretending the hurt wasn't real. While reading Jeremiah 32, Lauren was struck by an unusual act of faith: God tells Jeremiah to purchase a field while Jerusalem is under siege and the land is being overtaken by Babylon. From a human perspective, it makes absolutely no sense. But Jeremiah acts on something he cannot yet see: God has promised restoration on the other side of devastation. And that raises an important question: What if forgiveness is believing God enough to release what happened and trust Him with what comes next? Lauren also shares from her own journey of healing while writing STOLEN: A True Story—Kidnapped, Rescued, Redeemed, including what God has continued to teach her about father wounds, anger, forgiveness and healing. The transcript makes clear that writing the book has continued to uncover layers of healing rather than simply revisiting a story that was already completely resolved. In this episode: Why forgiveness doesn't mean what happened was okayThe difference between forgiveness and reconciliationWhy healthy boundaries can still be necessaryWhat Jeremiah's field teaches us about trusting God's futureHow unforgiveness can affect relationships, marriage and parentingWhy healing can happen in layersHow to surrender anger when it feels justifiedWhy the devastation doesn't get the final wordOne truth to remember: Your wound may be part of your story, but it does not get to write the ending. Jeremiah saw devastation. God saw restoration. Maybe today God is asking you to trust Him with what you've been carrying. 🙏 Stay through the end for a prayer for anyone struggling with forgiveness, resentment, father wounds or deep hurt. Send us Fan Mail What if the season you desperately want God to end is actually a season He is using? Waiting for healing. Waiting for a relationship to change. Waiting for a child. Waiting for direction. Waiting for a dream God placed in your heart to finally become reality. In this episode of The Redeemed Podcast, Lauren Burns sits down with author and Bible teacher Paige Allen to talk about what it means to trust God when His timing doesn't look anything like ours. Raised Jewish, Found Jesus: The Hidden Faith That Changed Everything

Send us Fan Mail What happens when following Jesus could cost you your family, your community, and the identity you’ve known your entire life? In this episode of The Redeemed Podcast, Lauren Burns sits down with Bible teacher Sandi York to share her powerful journey from growing up in a traditional Jewish home to discovering a personal relationship with Jesus as the Messiah. Sandi grew up immersed in Jewish tradition in Birmingham, Alabama. She attended Jewish day school, and her parents ran Alabama’s only Jewish newspaper. But when her mother came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah, Sandi was warned to keep that belief hidden from their Jewish family and community. For years, Sandi lived between two worlds—carrying secrecy, fear, and shame while trying to maintain the life others expected of her. After a short-lived marriage, difficult choices, and a season that brought her to rock bottom, Sandi found herself awake at 2:00 a.m., crying out to God. What happened next began changing everything. Within weeks, God opened doors for a job at a Christian radio station and a place to live through a coworker. For the first time, Sandi experienced Christian community up close. She began learning about prayer, devotionals, Scripture, and what it meant not simply to know about Jesus—but to surrender her life to Him as Lord. Eventually, Sandi faced another decision: Would she continue hiding her faith, or would she live unashamed of the gospel? Her decision to tell the truth led to letters sent to friends and family, painful backlash, public exposure, and strained relationships. But it also led to freedom, healing, restored relationships, and a faith she no longer had to hide. Today, Sandi teaches Scripture and encourages others to know God deeply and personally. She shares why **Song of Solomon 8:5—“Who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on her beloved?”—**has become such a meaningful picture of her walk with God. In this conversation, Lauren and Sandi talk about Judaism and Christianity, Messianic Jewish identity, family expectations, shame, secrecy, surrender, prayer, finding Jesus, spiritual transformation, and having the courage to live out your faith. If you have ever wrestled with family expectations, felt afraid to openly live out your faith, or wondered whether God could meet you at rock bottom, Sandi’s story is a reminder that He can meet us in the wilderness—and teach us to lean on Him.
