AD Basel: Barbara Buser - baubüro in situ

Barbara Buser likes the projects that are not possible. Raised in Basel in her great grandfather’s 150 year old house, which she twice saved from demolition, she grew up sailing, skating and paddling, and at 14 built her own fibreglass canoe. Her father, an engineer, taught her to ask where the money comes from and how it pays back. At ETH Zurich she studied architecture, sociology and energy, and took a dynamite course for fun. At 23 she spent her practical year living in a caravan on a Bernese farm, drafting at night on the steering wheel while classmates helped her build a three generation home for a family of seven. She has never worked in anyone else’s architecture office. Ten years in Sudan and Tanzania followed: 64 local builders digging wells that outlasted the drilled ones, then a maintenance unit for the University of Dar es Salaam. Along the way she picked up Swahili and Zande, and came to doubt aid that runs on donated money. An MBA sealed it. Every project would have to pay its own way. In 1998 she cofounded baubüro in situ with Eric Honegger. They take on buildings nobody wants, raise the money, create a company to run each one, then hand it over. Partners put in 1,000 francs and take back exactly 1,000. A 50,000 franc loan from her mother has rolled from project to project and mobilized millions. When the owners of Basel’s empty Markthalle asked her to be a mere resource person, she said no; it now serves 2,000 meals a day. Material hunters salvage what others demolish, and at Lagerplatz in Winterthur, a 12 year transformation of 20 buildings and 200 tenants, K.118 won Global Holcim Awards Gold. Today about 100 people work at in situ and can become owners through a cooperative. She holds the Basel Culture Prize and the 2026 Jane Drew Prize, sails three boats and collects watches. As Basel’s first ferry woman, she still steers one of its historic Rhine ferries, convinced that we must use what we have and take care of each other. baubüro in situ Upcoming Episode: RHAD Sponsors: Caplan's Appliances The Doors Marbella Canada To connect with our sponsors, email me: jonathan@issuedforconstruction.ca Issued For Construction

AD & ID: Kyle Bergman - Architecture & Design Film Festival

Kyle grew up in Gramercy Park as a self described free range kid. His parents, now in their mid 90s, are still out eating, drinking and causing trouble in Manhattan. His first job was digging clams off Cape Cod, a business plan undone mostly by eating the inventory. Next he cooked eggs at a Colorado diner whose motto was “where the folks get their yolks.” Architecture found him through a single elective in Boulder. A cocky summer in Breckenridge followed, where he took a deposit to design a house, realized he had no idea how buildings go together, and handed the money back. The lesson stuck. After two years in Asia running on traveler’s checks, eating things in Japan he would rather not name, and propping a heated table against the wall like a fireplace, he bought an 1860s farmhouse in Vermont. Then he spent a year and a half living in sawdust and reading construction books at night so he could follow what the crew said by day. The house became his portfolio. He cooked lunch for Dave’s office, gave them a tour of his smashed tile mosaic shower, and was hired on the spot. Later came design build work with Jim in California, Pacific Rim Parks starting in Vladivostok in 1994, and a publishing company that taught him how to raise money. Today Kyle runs an international architecture and design film festival, previews around 350 films a year, and still has not owned a TV since high school. Yes, that means he has never seen Seinfeld. Catch the festival this week in Toronto, November 4 to 7, and in Vancouver, November 10 to 15. ID Park City: Stephanie Hunt - Flair Hunter

Stephanie, known locally to some as Flair, is the founder of Flairhunter, a residential interior design studio based in Park City, Utah, with projects across the United States. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, to a Norwegian artist mother and a veterinarian and scientist father, she spent her early childhood moving between Scotland, Norway, Mallorca and California. That upbringing shaped her eye for culture, colour and collected pieces. She studied broadcast and print journalism at the University of Southern California, graduating magna cum laude, and planned on law school while working at Los Angeles law firms. Her instincts kept pulling her toward how the office looked rather than the litigation. While raising two young sons in Newport Beach, she completed the certificate program at Interior Designers Institute, apprenticed with established Orange County designers, and later joined Diane Johnson Design, working on luxury estates in Malibu and Newport Beach as well as megayacht interiors. Her younger son’s competitive snowboarding career brought the family to Park City, where her own practice grew through word of mouth and expanded significantly during the pandemic. Now more than 25 years into her career, Stephanie leads a team spread across Utah, California, Georgia and Texas. Flairhunter is known for bold colour, high contrast, fine art curation, and vintage and flea market finds sourced during frequent international travel. Her work has been featured in publications including The Wall Street Journal, Better Homes & Gardens and Utah Style & Design. AD Halifax Series: Devin Harper - Hewn + Barter

Devin Harper builds the way his family always has. His studio, Hewn + Barter, is named for 1870, when his great great grandfather came to Tignish, PEI to build the church and bartered that craft with fishermen and farmers for a homestead. Devin grew up outside Charlottetown, the son of a carpenter, in a house his father kept adding onto as the family grew. Gifts were made by hand, and the workshop opened up one tool at a time. Childhood meant full neighbourhood teams and every sport going, from hockey to rugby. At 18 he joined the Naval Reserve, training as an officer, sailing past the Arctic Circle and up to Alaska, diving on ship hulls, and serving some 16 years. It gave him leadership, process, and a calm that holds under pressure. After a biology degree, he turned to architecture, studying at Boston Architectural College while hauling rock for a landscape architect by day, then earning his Master of Architecture at Dalhousie in 2015. Work at Omar Gandhi Architect, Chapman Taylor in the UK, a design build firm and a commercial practice taught him he needed both worlds. In 2018 he designed and built a riverbank sauna for his mother in law as a thank you. A year later he founded Hewn + Barter, an architecture practice with its own builders and craftspeople. The studio designs and builds its own projects, from the Nature Folk spa in Dartmouth’s former city hall to Aura Women’s Wellness and Weird Harbour café in Halifax. It also builds for leading architects including Omar Gandhi, and runs a growing millwork shop. Off hours, Devin coaches his two boys and rides Wentworth’s trails. AD Halifax Series: Richard Kroeker Pt.2

In part two, Richard Kroeker picks up where he left off and goes deeper into the ideas behind his life’s work. He explains why the Architectural Association, a school founded and still run by its students, left him asking why every university doesn’t work that way, and how that conviction turned his Dalhousie studios into research teams producing work for real communities rather than grades destined for the bin. He returns to Gambia, where his former students still lead a grassroots group building walkways that reconnect women to flooded gardens and safe latrines at village markets, and recalls a chief who warned him that every graduate now needs an air conditioned office. He describes years of building longhouses and lodges with Mi’kmaw knowledge holders, staying with Albert and Murdena Marshall in a home where the teapot never emptied and the whole community passed through the kitchen, a bond he now honours with a bursary for Mi’kmaw students. Richard tells how he bent trees on logging roads with his car and a rope, then called Buro Happold, whose engineer Chris Williams came over at cost and slept on his couch. That work led to the Pictou Landing Health Centre, framed in local spruce shaped by the community. He looks back on addressing the International Union of Architects in Berlin alongside Frei Otto, the Schelling Medal that followed, and the Order of Canada call he assumed was a wrong number. He closes with the prizes that matter most: an honest critic in his wife, a son and grandson living next door, and a simple rule to do everything with love. Richard Kroeker Upcoming Episode: Hewn + Barter Sponsors: Caplan's Appliances The Doors To connect with our sponsors, email me: jonathan@issuedforconstruction.ca Issued For Construction

AD Halifax Series: Richard Kroeker Pt.1

Richard Kroeker grew up on a Manitoba farm near a small prairie village, one of five boys in a home where canning season, butchering bees and hay crews were shared community work. His father, a Ukrainian immigrant who worked as a bricklayer, plumber, carpenter and mechanic, told his sons that their heads were their future. Richard set out to be a naturalist, drawing and painting everything he observed, until a shortcut through the University of Manitoba architecture building showed him people laughing, building and generating ideas together. He soon changed course. He went on to the Architectural Association in London, where students wrote their own curriculum and defended it before external juries, with teachers that included Peter Cook and Zaha Hadid. After designing in London through the Thatcher years, a teaching post brought his family home to Canada and to Dalhousie University in Halifax. There he became a professor, director of the School of Architecture, and now Professor Emeritus, treating the studio as a place to solve real problems. In Gambia, his students built hand pumps from discarded tires and flotation gear from water bottles for fishing families. In Eskasoni, he worked with Albert and Murdena Marshall, and in Minnesota a studio helped protect a Dakota sacred site. Richard is a Member of the Order of Canada, a 2022 World Architecture Festival WAFX award winner for the Muscowpetung Powwow Arbour, and a recipient of the Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award for the Pictou Landing Health Centre. He still paints. ID Toronto: Jaime Zimmerman - JPZ Interiors

Jamie grew up in Cedarvale, the youngest of three sisters, with summers at the family cottage on Lake Simcoe. By her own account she was a serial quitter of piano, guitar and dance, but she never stopped making things, from beading and painting to bedazzling, and she still remembers the hot pink and orange Ikea haul that made decorating her bedroom feel like a turning point. A psychology degree from McGill did not point her toward design, but a nudge from her mom and a leap into a Toronto interior design program did. She passed on Parsons in New York, spent a summer traveling through Southeast Asia, and learned the business from the ground up through retail at Club Monaco, a short stint selling condo upgrades, and nearly five years at Tara Fingold Interiors, where she picked up drafting, styling, purchasing and the confidence to get on the phone and make things happen. After a maternity leave that came to an end, in early 2020, weeks before the world shut down, she launched JPZ Interiors with one renovation, a freshly photographed home and an Instagram account. Today her Toronto residential practice often runs around ten projects at once and has reached Florida, and she is building a team while raising three kids. Along the way she opens up about pricing her time, writing her first contracts, trusting her gut on red flags, and why you should simply pick up the phone and ask. JPZ Interiors Upcoming Episode: Richard Kroeker Sponsors: Caplan's Appliances The Doors To connect with our sponsors, email me: jonathan@issuedforconstruction.ca Issued For Construction

AD Halifax Series: Duncan, Jennifer & Will - Place of Work

Place of Work is an architecture studio with one foot in Halifax and one in Toronto, founded by Jennifer Esposito, Duncan Patterson, and Will Perkins. The three first worked together at MacKay Lyons Sweetapple Architects, and when COVID shook everything loose they realized a practice built on trust and shared shorthand could live in two cities. Today they design mostly houses, with a deep interest in the rituals that happen inside them, and the studio was featured in the Wallpaper* Architects Directory 2026. The name comes from a term in a Canadian construction contract, where it simply means the site, but they loved how it also speaks to place and to work. Will was born in Halifax, spent his early years in Los Angeles and New Zealand while his luthier father worked abroad, and trained in lighting design at the National Theatre School of Canada before starting architecture school at 26. Duncan grew up between Regina and his dad’s cattle ranch, sketching in colored Conte and building fences, then came to Dalhousie by way of an architectural technology program. Jennifer, a Toronto native and former varsity swimmer, followed Carleton and Harvard’s GSD with practice in Yellowknife and Halifax, and now teaches at Toronto Metropolitan University while advocating for equity in the profession through BEAT. Away from the studio, Will cooks ambitious dinners, meditates early in the morning, and is learning tennis for the joy of not being good at it. Duncan hikes, camps, plays rec league basketball, and joins his brother’s nonprofit that turns basketball courts into murals. Jennifer reads, travels, and dreams of a shack on the ocean. Place of Work Upcoming Episode: JPZ Interiors Sponsors: Caplan's Appliances The Doors To connect with our sponsors, email me: jonathan@issuedforconstruction.ca Issued For Construction
