In Grand Central Terminal, Netflix handed commuters custom tarot decks. Lush even brought in a practicing witch to write its Halloween copy. So why are major brands so comfortable using séances, tarot and witchcraft to sell burritos, banking and fashion? And what happens to a culture when practices Scripture calls an abomination become the punchline of a commercial?     Is It Harmless?

    Halloween will bring in about $13 billion this year. Most people call it harmless fun for kids. But do they know where it came from? In this week’s teaching, Dr. David Bowen traces Halloween back to its roots. The Celts celebrated Samhain, a festival of harvest, death and darkness. They believed the spirits of the dead walked among the living. People wore costumes to fool those spirits and carved jack-o-lanterns to scare them off. In the ninth century, Pope Gregory IV moved All Saints Day to November 1, right in the middle of Samhain. He meant to give new converts a Christian alternative. Instead, the ritual stayed pagan and picked up Christian symbols along the way. So how should a believer respond? Scripture points to three answers. 1. Don’t respond like a superstitious pagan. Christ disarmed the powers of darkness at the cross (Colossians 2:15). 2. Respond with wisdom. The real dangers on October 31 are drunk drivers, vandals and unsupervised kids. 3. Respond with gospel compassion. The world lives in fear of death and judgment (Hebrews 10:27). Halloween hands you an open door to talk about both. Your family might sit it out, host a harvest festival or take food baskets to neighbors in need. That choice is a matter of conscience before God. One thing isn’t optional, though. Stay separate from the world and show mercy to those who are perishing.     Is This Ezekiel 38?
