Rachael Piltch-Loeb: Navigating the Sandwich Generation and the Cost of Care

Caught between raising kids and caring for aging parents, more people than ever are being stretched to a breaking point. In this episode, you’ll hear a public health expert and millennial caregiver unpack the real costs, hard truths, and practical ways to prepare for the sandwich generation reality. In this episode, Philip and Rachael discuss:  Defining the sandwich (and “club sandwich”) generationFinancial and systemic challenges of long-term careEmotional and organizational burdens of family caregivingThe Millennial Caregiver book and tech-enabled support resourcesTrust, misinformation, and using AI and the internet for health decisions Lightbulb Moments: Caring for children and aging parents at the same time is no longer an exception; it’s a growing norm, with multiple generations potentially needing support at once.Medical advances are helping people live longer, but our financial, insurance, and social systems have not kept up with the realities or costs of long-term care.Effective caregiving requires more than love and effort; it demands organization, reliable information, emotional support, and often difficult family conversations about expectations and wishes.Planning ahead—legally, financially, and logistically—can ease future crises, but it also means confronting uncomfortable topics like cognitive decline, loss of autonomy, and where we want to age.In a world flooded with information and AI tools, developing the ability to validate sources, triangulate facts, and lean on trusted networks is now a critical life skill. “You can think about a nursing home as another tuition payment… we need to be thinking about how to financially plan for that need.” - Rachael Piltch-Loeb Rachael Piltch-Loeb is a professor and researcher in public health. She holds an MSPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a PhD from New York University. She is also a millennial and a mom of young children who watched in strain and sadness as her dad struggled with Early-onset Alzheimer’s. Inspired by her family’s experience with caregiving and her academic training, she wrote The Millennial Caregiver to create a resource for other young caregivers juggling family, career, and coping. Rob Wolcott: Proximity, Prevention, and the Future of Everything

What if the future of business, healthcare, and even space travel could be predicted by a single idea—proximity? In this episode, you’ll hear how digital technologies are collapsing distance, reshaping supply chains, and moving healthcare from crisis response to true prevention. In this episode, Philip and Rob Wolcott discuss:  Origin story of proximity and general-purpose technologiesHow digital changes production, supply chains, and “P = 0”Electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and flawed paradigmsProximity’s impact on healthcare and preventive medicineEdge scaling, micro-factories, and rebuilding manufacturingTwin (The World Innovation Network) and relationship capitalVenture investing through a proximity lens (water, pharma, food, space) Lightbulb Moments: Digital technologies fundamentally differ from industrial-age tools because they allow capabilities to be compressed into smaller packages and pushed closer to the exact moment and location of demand. Many massive infrastructure bets—like widespread public EV chargers—reflect old paradigms, and are likely to underperform because they ignore how proximity changes behavior and economics.Proximity in healthcare will increasingly compel the system away from late-stage diagnosis and toward continuous monitoring and prevention, dramatically improving outcomes and costs.Manufacturing’s future lies in “edge scaling”: smaller, distributed, digitally enabled micro-factories located near demand, not single gigantic plants half a world away.A diverse portfolio of trusted, ethically grounded relationships is becoming one of the most critical forms of capital for navigating disruption and building the future. “A portfolio of trusted relationships is not only important; it's becoming essential.” - Rob Wolcott Rob Wolcott is an Adjunct Professor of Innovation at Booth, University of Chicago, and Kellogg, Northwestern University. From 2007 to 2019, he was a Clinical Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Kellogg, as well as a four-time Teacher of the Year in Kellogg’s EMBA program and a Visiting Fellow at Imperial College London. He is a venture investor in nearly 50 companies and venture funds, the Founder & Chair of TWIN Global (www.twinglobal.org), a global community of innovation leaders, and a board member at Abroad.io and global non-profit CureBlindness Project. He is the author of PROXIMITY (Columbia University Press, 2024), shortlisted for the Thinkers50 Breakthrough Idea of 2025 award, and a Contributor for Forbes on the impact of technology on business and humanity, with his work appearing in MIT Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, and many other publications worldwide. Patrick Kennedy: Future-Proofing Trade in an Unpredictable World

In a world of tariffs, geopolitical shocks, and broken supply chains, how do countries and companies stay resilient? In this episode, we go north of the border to unpack how Canada is rethinking trade, policy, and partnerships to future‑proof its economy—and what that means for your business. In this episode, Philip and Patrick Kennedy discuss:  Canada–U.S. supply chains and nitrogen fertilizer fundamentalsTrade uncertainty, tariffs, and the USMCA reviewHow Canada’s political and policy-making system actually worksThe role of Earnscliff in public affairs and cross-border business strategyStress, resilience, and the power of relationships and “showing up” Lightbulb Moments: Supply chains that once felt invisible and automatic are now under intense scrutiny, forcing governments and companies to think seriously about resilience and domestic capacity.Businesses can handle change far better than they can handle unpredictability; clear rules and frameworks matter more than whether every outcome is ideal.Diversifying trade and supply routes is not about abandoning existing partners, but about adding options so a system can better withstand shocks.Policy in Canada is shaped through a highly consultative, consensus-oriented process, creating many touchpoints for stakeholders to engage before laws are finalized. In an age of social media noise and political volatility, investing in real relationships, showing up in person, and engaging directly in the process is a critical strategic advantage. “Making the effort to show up gives you skin in the game and a seat at the table” - Patrick Kennedy Patrick advises Canadian and international organizations across sectors like tech, defense, finance, and health on public policy, government relations, and strategic stakeholder engagement. Drawing on leadership experience across government, Parliament, industry, and consulting—including as Past President of the Government Relations Institute of Canada—he helps executive teams navigate complex regulatory landscapes, align business goals with policy priorities, and build credible, long-term advocacy strategies. Patrick holds an M.Sc. in Public Policy from the London School of Economics as a Chevening Scholar and an Honours B.A. from Queen’s University. Logan Yonavjak: Inside the Readiness Engine for Startup Founders and Investors

What if your podcast interviews, pitch calls, and founder meetings could be analyzed to reveal how you really lead under pressure? In this episode, we dive into an AI-powered platform that reads between the lines of transcripts to uncover leadership readiness, founder resilience, and the hidden patterns that drive startup success. In this episode, Philip and Logan Yonavjak discuss:  AI-powered leadership and developmental assessmentThe Readiness Engine platform and transcript analysisFounder readiness, investor decision-making, and people analyticsPatterns, complexity, and stages of leadership developmentAg tech, soil health, and the future of sustainable investing Lightbulb Moments: Leadership can be evaluated not just through self-reported tests, but by analyzing how people naturally speak, tell stories, and respond under pressure.Transcript-based assessment offers a way to reduce bias and move beyond gut feeling alone when investors evaluate early-stage founders.A clear developmental roadmap is more valuable than a static assessment result; knowing how to grow is as critical as knowing where you are.Resistance to being evaluated often reveals attachment to ego and a lower tolerance for feedback, which can limit growth and adaptability.Thoughtful use of AI — with clear guardrails, skills, and prompts — can dramatically enhance strategy, reflection, and decision-making, but it should complement, not replace, human connection. “Once you see how the system is operating and at what level it's operating, you can then see how to program it to function at a higher level of operation” - Logan Yonavjak Logan Yonavjak is Co-Founder & CEO of the Readiness Engine, a leadership intelligence company measuring the hidden drivers of execution risk inside growing organizations. She has helped move hundreds of millions of institutional capital across climate and natural capital strategies and now focuses on building the Readiness Engine™ - a platform that transforms leadership potential from subjective judgment into measurable, predictive insight.
