Sole Sisters – 28: From Melbourne Marathon to New York, via the Afterparty

Elise has survived her Nike Melbourne Marathon commentary debut. Alice is recording from the floor of her New York apartment, where one working power point is keeping both the podcast and the toaster in business. There’s a bit to catch up on. We go behind the scenes of the Melbourne broadcast, from producers talking in your ear while you're mid-sentence, to trying to last six hours on one banana. There’s journal chat with Kipchoge and Mona, gripping races, and a late-night encounter with Sinead Diver that put an end to Elise’s plans for a responsible exit. Meanwhile, Alice’s sister makes her marathon debut – but not before strapping a fellow runner’s ankle in the start corral. Over in New York, Alice is leading Pilates on the big stage with Lululemon, escaping to the woods for some R&R and gearing up for New York Marathon week. We talk through some names to watch, including Australia’s national record holder in the marathon, Haftu Strintzos! We also celebrate Izzi Batt-Doyle’s breakthrough marathon in Chicago, and hear how a few chardonnays with her mum became a celebration by proxy. This week’s recommendations: Elise: Race Around the World on ABC Alice: Drunk Mums at a Sunday BBQ Take what you need from this episode with EB & AB, and go forth like a pigeon rising from a dumpster fire.  -- Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don’t miss a thing! -- Follow us on Instagram: @runwithit.pod @alicebaquie @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

66: Georgie Grgec – Melbourne Half Glory and Manifesting What’s Next…

What a few weeks it’s been for Georgie Grgec! After winning the Nike Melbourne Half Marathon, the Melbourne-based Kiwi headed to Tasmania and ran a blistering 31:21 at Burnie 10 over the weekend, breaking the New Zealand 10km road record and setting a new course record! In this conversation, recorded before her record-breaking run in Burnie, Georgie talks us through her Melbourne win: the rapid start, the tough final kilometres solo and the thrill of entering the MCG knowing the victory was hers. She also reflects on representing New Zealand at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen where she came an incredible 23rd! Georgie has taken to the half marathon like a duck to water. She is now the second-fastest NZ woman of all time over the half marathon, with a PB of 1:09:13 and many consistent performances around that mark. Most excitingly, she is planning a marathon debut early next year, with an aim to score a spot on that LA 2028 Olympic team. We’ll try and manifest that for her! Georgie shares how she’s found a training approach that works for her after a history of injuries and RED-S, combining running with cross-training and strength work. We chat about balancing elite running with work, training alongside some speedy Melbourne Track Club teammates, and why she’s learned not to compare her training with anyone else’s. -- Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don’t miss a thing! -- Follow us on Instagram: @runwithit.pod @georgiegrgec @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

64: Izzi Batt-Doyle – New Australian Marathon Record Holder!

The Queen of Consistency gets her marathon breakthrough! Izzi Batt-Doyle joins Elise after running 2:20:38 at Chicago Marathon on Sunday, finishing sixth and taking 46 seconds off the previous record held by Jess Stenson. We dissect the years of work behind the scenes and why doing fewer kilometres this time helped Izzi get more out of herself when it mattered. Izzi describes a mindset shift that focused on running her best rather than targeting the record, she tells us how she quietened the outside noise (bye bye Strava) and how fiancé Riley Cocks authentically stepped into the role of coach (and pacer on the historic record-breaking day). We get into the race itself: managing the heat, nailing her fuelling, passing four women in the final mile and realising the record was hers with 200 metres to go. With Riley pacing and her mum Rosey waiting at the finish, it’s a day Izzi calls the best of her life!  Loved this chat with IBD!  --  Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- If you liked this conversation, go back and listen to Episodes 2 and 46 of Run With It for more of Izzi! 61: Erchana Murray-Bartlett – Lights, Camera… 150 Marathons in 150 Days

Erchana Murray-Bartlett has never been afraid of a big challenge. She ran 150 marathons in 150 days from the tip to the toe of Australia, raised money and awareness for the Wilderness Society, and later ran as an independent candidate in the federal election. Now, her record-breaking journey has been captured in the new documentary 150, directed by filmmaker Ryan Kennedy (who is also Erchana’s husband), and narrated by Australian TV show host and journalist, Osher Günsberg. Erchana reflects on the physical pain, mental monotony and unforgettable encounters behind her incredible feat, now immortalised on film. She shares how her love for Australia’s wildlife and the wild places that gave the challenge a deeper purpose. We also talk about the coincidental timing of Nedd Brockmann’s run across Australia, Erchana’s path from football to marathon running, life as a new mum and her general tendency to operate on “vibes”. FILM SCREENING: If you want to see the 150 film and you live close to the Surf Coast, Run With It and Torquay Run Club are hosting a screening (details below): Bells Beach Brewing, Torquay VIC Thursday 8th October, 6pm Live Q&A with Erchana, followed by the film screening Prize giveaways from Mikro Coffee Roasters, Tarkine and The Running Company Torquay Tickets available for $12 at fan-force.com/screenings/150-bells-beach-brewing/ --  Run With It acknowledges the Wadawurrung People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, and pays our respects to Elders past and present. -- Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don’t miss a thing! -- Follow us on Instagram: @erchana_ @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

60: Andy Buchanan – First Australian at Sydney Marathon!

Andy Buchanan is back – and he’s the newly crowned Australian marathon champion! After a challenging year of injuries, marathon withdrawals and a very patient return to running, Andy crossed the Sydney Marathon finish line in 2:10:14 as the first Australian. He joins Elise to debrief the race kilometre by kilometre: the wildly fast opening, an unexpected gee up from one of the world’s fastest 5,000m runners and the brutal final descent that left his quads completely cooked. Andy also opens up about the difficult year preceding Sydney, including recurring femoral bone stress injuries, learning to fuel his body properly and watching Haftu Strintzos break his Australian marathon record by just two seconds. He reflects on separating identity from results, sharing the less glamorous parts of elite sport and why his coach Scott Westcott sometimes needs to remind him: “It’s not that deep.” It's always great to catch up with Andy. And let’s wait and see whether he chooses the camera or the car upgrade?! Content warning: This episode includes a short discussion about body weight and under-fuelling in the context of bone stress injuries (23-25 mins into the podcast). --  This episode is brought to you by Shokz, the leading brand in open-ear headphones.
