Ep. 96 / Christian Supremacy And The Gospel with Matthew D. Taylor (Part 2)

In this episode Dr. Matthew D. Taylor returns for another conversation. As a renowned religious scholar and author whose work focuses on Christian nationalism and extremism, Dr. Taylor helps us understand the most dangerous edges of the phenomenon and why the language of “Christian supremacy” names the belief that some hold to, that they are entitled to rule simply because they are Christians. We walk through the long Christian history behind these ideas, from Constantine and the birth of Christendom, to the Crusades, the Inquisition, colonialism, and the habit of treating coercion as if it were discipleship. Dr. Taylor argues that when the church fuses the cross with domination it doesn’t just get politics wrong, it distorts the gospel itself. That’s where his framework of “Christian antichrist” comes in: not a single end-times villain, but recurring patterns where Christians claim Jesus’ authority while abusing power, harming neighbours, and baptizing cruelty. Finally, we turn toward the alternative that’s been there all along. We talk about how the incarnation and the worship of a crucified Saviour subvert status, how Jesus dismantles hierarchies, and why the early church treats wealth and rank as non-advantages inside the community of faith. Taylor offers a practical way to discern false authority by focusing less on slogans and more on deeds and the love of our neighbour.  If you'd like to learn more from Dr. Matthew D. Ep. 95 / The Language of Antichrist and Abuse of Power with Matthew D. Taylor (Part 1)

Over the last decade spiritual language about revival, prophecy and “anointing” has started showing up at the center of American evangelical politics, and many of us have struggled to name what’s happening without oversimplifying it. In this episode Dr. Matthew D. Taylor returns for another conversation. As a renowned religious scholar and author whose work focuses on Christian nationalism and extremism, he helps us trace how these movements gained influence and why the shift has been so fast.  We talk about the roots: Latter Rain theology, modern-day apostles and prophets, and the kind of end-times optimism that can slide into triumphalism. We also explore how this charismatic current intersects with dominion theology and the Seven Mountains Mandate, creating a powerful mix of spiritual authority and political ambition. If you’ve seen the images of leaders praying over presidents, or heard claims that a political figure is “chosen by God,” we unpack the theological ecosystem that makes those claims feel plausible to many sincere believers.  Then we turn toward what comes next. Matthew explains why resisting Christian nationalism cannot only be a civic argument about norms and institutions. It has to be a theological argument too, grounded in the New Testament and the character of Jesus. We also dig into his claim that “Antichrist” in 1 John and 2 John often points to insiders who abuse power in Jesus’ name, which forces every church to examine its own habits of authority, fear and control. Ep. 94 / Friendship With and Lordship Under Christ with John Vissers

The phrase “friendship with Jesus” can sound like sentimental religion, but we wanted to test whether it can actually survive modern skepticism and real pain. In this episode we sit down with Rev. Dr. John A. Vissers, Professor of Systematic Theology at Knox College and longtime pastor and church leader, to talk about his book "Friendship with Christ" and the single passage that has shaped his life: John 15. If Jesus says “I call you friends,” what kind of friendship is he offering, and what does it demand of us?  We dig into why Dr. Vissers insists on “Christ” rather than only “Jesus” and why that title matters for Christian theology and Christian spirituality. He walks us through John 15 in a classic Reformed Theology frame: Christ as prophet who reveals the Father, priest who lays down his life for his friends, and king who chooses and leads without surrendering lordship. That mix keeps friendship from becoming casual and keeps discipleship from becoming cold. We end with a story of embodied care that makes the whole argument concrete: friendship with Christ experienced through a faithful friend. If you'd like to learn more from Dr. John Vissers you can purchase his book, and read his bio from Knox College. Ep. 93 / The Prayerful Singer-Songwriter with Steve Bell

A prairie-born songwriter learns guitar from prison inmates, writes prayer songs that refuse to tidy up suffering, and somehow ends up performing with symphony orchestras across Canada. That’s the life and work of Steve Bell, and in this episode we talk to him about what faithful art can be when it stops trying to manage outcomes and starts telling the truth. We start with Steve’s early years and the family pain that shaped him, then the story takes an unexpected turn into prison ministry, where Steve finds a community that welcomes weakness and where Saturday jam sessions became his first music school. From there we explore the craft: fingerstyle guitar, the slow formation of a writer, and why the Psalms work better as poetry than slogans. Then we talk about his decision to walk away from the Christian music industry machine, stay an independent artist, and create projects like Pilgrim Year (walking through the Christian calendar), and The Glad Surprise, that nourish listeners without flattening the divine mystery. If you'd like to go deeper with Steve Bell, listen to his music and see him perform live, you can go to his website, listen to his albums on all streaming platforms, and follow him on social media. Ep. 92 / Pursuing Excellence as Pastoral Care with Mark Clark

An atheist kid from Toronto becomes one of the most persuasive evangelical voices in North America, and it starts with a blunt sentence from a classmate: “You need Jesus.” In this episode we sit down with pastor and author, Mark Clark, as he reflects on his upbringing, his testimony, and his passion for reaching skeptics and the next generation.  He shares with us the real-world mechanics behind planting Village Church in Vancouver, and his current role at Bayside Church in California. Pastor Mark explains why preaching to skeptics matters, how churches can build momentum when new people bring new people, and why hospitality is not a gimmick but a form of love. He shares practical ideas, as well as a clear challenge: the church should not ask people to serve the institution before it learns how to them well. Then we get specific about the craft of preaching. Mark walks us through his sermon preparation process and what it means to speak publicly in these polarized, politically turbulent times; and why Gen Z's interest in the Bible should give us all hope. Ep. 91 / Global Voices, One Gospel and the WEA with Peirong Lin

People love to talk about “evangelicals” as if they’re one neat, predictable block. The global reality is messier, richer, and far more interesting. In this episode we sit down with Dr. Peirong Lin, Chief of Staff for the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), to hear how a movement representing 650 million evangelicals across 164 countries tries to serve the church with integrity, clarity, and cooperation across cultures. Dr. Lin shares her story from Singapore, shaped by a praying grandmother and mission schools, to doctoral studies in theology in Europe, and then into a leadership role that sits at the intersection of theology, global diplomacy and governance. We talk about what a Chief of Staff actually does when the team is lean but the needs are worldwide.  We also dig into religious freedom and persecution, including how the WEA advocates through its UN presence in Geneva and New York, and trains national alliances to speak up for themselves. Along the way, we address women in leadership across a diverse cultural spectrum, and what it takes to pursue unity without letting any one region, personality, or funding center dominate the discussion. If you'd like to learn more from Dr. Peirong Lin you can go to the WEA website and follow them on social media. Ep. 90 / When the Church Loses Power and Finds Purpose with Darrell Bock

If you feel like Christian public witness has become all heat and no light, this conversation offers a different way forward. In this episode we sit down with Dr. Darrell Bock, Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and a leading voice on Luke, Acts, and the historical Jesus, to talk about what the church cannot afford to get wrong right now. We start with Darrell’s own conversion story and why remembering how non-Christians hear us changes everything. From there we zoom out to the global church: believers who live with no social, cultural, or political power, yet still carry spiritual influence and resilient hope. We discuss secularism in the West, Christian growth in the Global South, and how conversations about Islam require careful distinctions between persecution, diaspora, and real opportunities for neighbourly engagement. Then we get practical and personal. Darrell challenges culture-war instincts, critiques Christian nationalism, and argues the church must keep credibility by speaking with an independent voice that can evaluate both the right and the left. He reframes evangelism around hope and invitation, anchors identity in Genesis 1, and presents a theology of cultural engagement built for public space where persuasion matters and tone is inseparable from truth. Ep. 89 / Faith and Politics Without Illusion or Idolatry with David Koyzis

Politics can feel like a faith test right now. If you’ve ever wondered why public life pulls so many Christians toward either retreat or rage, you’re not alone and you’re not crazy for feeling the tension. In this episode we sit down with Dr. David Koyzis, a political theologian and professor whose latest book, Citizenship Without Illusions: A Christian Guide to Political Engagement, has helped evangelicals think more clearly about Christian citizenship and the limits of politics.  We dig into a challenging idea: political ideologies can function like modern idolatry, offering a faux-salvation story that mimics the biblical narrative while quietly demanding our ultimate loyalty. We talk about how liberalism can turn individual autonomy into an idol that weakens community, how Marxism borrows a redemption arc with a different “messiah,” and why any movement can become spiritually dangerous when it starts carrying religious weight. From there we get practical. We explore how to develop discernment in an era of culture wars, social media polarization, and constant labeling of people as left or right. We argue for a posture of humility and listening, because the line between good and evil runs through every human heart. We also revisit Abraham Kuyper’s vision of Christ’s lordship over all of life, along with common grace and the need to make a persuasive, peaceable place at the public table rather than trying to take it over.
