Avoiding the Trap of Self-Righteousness and Spiritual Pride

“More evil gets done in the name of righteousness than any other way.”— Glen Cook There’s a curious detail in the story of the carpenter from Nazareth. He could sit with just about anyone — tax collectors, thieves, the openly messy — and he had remarkable patience for all the usual human failings. But there was one thing that reliably got under his skin: self-righteousness. The certainty of the people who were quite sure they were the good ones. Jacqueline and I find that fascinating, because self-righteousness might be the most universal blind spot there is. It’s the one pitfall on the road of self-work that everybody can spot in everybody else and almost nobody can spot in themselves. Think of it as a cul-de-sac: you’re driving along feeling like you’re making great progress, and you’ve actually just looped back to your own front door with the windows down, letting everyone know how far you’ve come. And here’s what makes it such a good subject for an hour of conversation — it’s sneaky. The ego is clever. When it can’t win by being the richest or the most successful, it’ll happily settle for being the most right, the most awake, the most evolved person in the room. Same appetite, nicer outfit. So today we want to explore this pitfall with a lot of curiosity and, we hope, a little humor — because taking it too seriously is its own kind of trap. What is self-righteousness really — and why is it so much easier to see in other people? How does it dress itself up in spiritual clothes and call itself growth? And what actually gets us out of the cul-de-sac and back onto the road? All of this and more in the next hour.

    The Posture of Abundance

Abundance is not something we chase or build. It is a frequency we endeavor to align with — spiritual power rather than material force. Abundance is not out there waiting to be earned, chased, or deserved. It is already here, already broadcasting, and the only real question is whether we are tuned to receive it. This is how we’ve chosen to position our life together — and it runs against almost everything the world trained us to believe. We came to this posture from opposite directions, which is part of why we wanted to explore it together. Jacqueline has felt at home in abundance for as long as she can remember — it’s her natural frequency. The other road was longer and rougher: years spent in the opposite posture, clutching and striving and quietly certain there would never be enough, until the futility of it finally gave way to surrender. Two very different roads — and we’ve arrived in the same place, living this together now. And we want to be clear from the start: we include money in this. Money is a flow of abundance, not the exception to it — and we’ll get into exactly what we mean by that. One more thing, so no one mistakes this for spiritual bypass. The posture of abundance does not mean the end of struggle or pain. Sometimes it means more of it. Because abundance always sits on the other side of surrender. What does it actually mean to live from abundance instead of scarcity — and can a posture like that really change? Why do we insist on including money — and what do we mean when we call it a flow? And why does real abundance so often wait for us on the far side of our surrender? All of this and more in the next hour.

The Elimination Diet: Gossip, Judgment, and Drama

“You only are free when you realize you belong no place — you belong every place — no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.” — Maya Angelou We spend so much energy watching what we put into our bodies — the food, the drink, the supplements. But Jacqueline and I have been asking a different question lately: what’s in our emotional and spiritual diet? And when we looked honestly, we found some things worth eliminating. Gossip. Judgment. Drama. Here’s what we keep coming back to. Underneath gossip is a hunger to belong. We bond with someone over a shared opinion about someone else, and it feels like connection — but it’s a counterfeit. The belonging we’re actually starving for is belonging to ourselves, and every helping of gossip and judgment takes us further from it, not closer. We get enmeshed in the outer world, outwardly focused, and — in the language we love — our frequency drops. But something remarkable happens when you take those things off the menu. With nothing left to project outward, you’re left sitting with your own discomfort. You turn inward. You meet your own shadow. And your frequency rises. Because what we judge in other people is almost always a part of ourselves we haven’t yet accepted. So today we want to go on an elimination diet together — and see what kind of freedom is waiting on the other side of it. Why do we gossip and judge in the first place — what are we really hungry for? What happens when we stop projecting and finally sit with our own discomfort? And is it possible that self-forgiveness — self-love — is the whole point? All of this and more in the next hour.
