#424 - Steven Pinker - The Problem With Trying To Be Rational

Steven Pinker is a Cognitive Psychologist at Harvard University, a psycholinguist and a Best Selling Author.
It would be nice to always make the right decision. To escape the prison of human emotions and biases and operate from a purely rational place. Steven's new book breaks down rationality into it's components in an attempt to understand just what we're all missing from our mental makeup.
Expect to learn why betting websites are the most accurate forecasters of the future, why learning lists of cognitive biases won't always make you more effective, whether smart people are more or less rational on average, whether politics makes you dumber, how to balance rationality with a desire to be intuitive and present and much more...

#422 - Dr Joe Henrich - Evolution, Psychology, Monogamy & Culture

#422 - Dr Joe Henrich - Evolution, Psychology, Monogamy & Culture

Joe Henrich is Professor of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University and an author.
Humans like to think that we're sovereign individuals with agency over our preferences and actions. But we are also a part of our social environment and Joe has teased apart some fascinating trends which explain how our location and culture have huge impacts on the way we behave, our preferences on everything from dating to work and family life to religion.
Expect to learn why the things we consider to be human nature could just be cultural conditioning, the dangerous future if there's lots of sexless men, how the choice between growing rice and wheat impacts family life, what having diplomatic immunity from parking tickets can teach us about human nature, how Joe's lab can use language to archaeologically tell us about social trends from history and much more...

#421 - Hamza - How Men Can Survive The Modern Dating World

Many young guys would rather watch porn and play video games than connect with the real world. This creates swathes of lonely, disconnected men and leaves women with fewer and fewer good options in the dating market. Expect to learn the biggest mistakes Hamza made when improving himself, why Fresh & Fit need to take food out of their mouth, Hamza's thoughts on Britney Spears getting naked on Instagram, how to avoid being Black Pilled with a growth mindset, if Hamza thinks the future of dating will be polygamous, why the manosphere sees women as the enemy, Hamza's reaction to Mikhaila Peterson and Rollo Tomassi's debate and much more...

Engaging Conversations…

with famous and not so famous guests. Every episode a delight with nuggets of wisdom dispersed through out.

@HyperIntellect ,

Illuminating Conversations

Philosophy educates its best students that humans who embrace reason are rare. So rare, We have never known any who do.

(iPhones show this full eight paragraph review, but Macs and iPads cut most, pending a software patch.)

“The vast majority of human beings are not interested in reason or satisfied with what it teaches.”
- author and philosopher Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

In humanity’s defense (pro bono, but for this case only), We do frequently see cleverness. Including efforts to hide the marionette strings.

We occasionally proof that society almost unanimously ignores or even punishes reason and rationalists, but engages absurdities. Without fail. Modern Wisdom is no exception, as human nature does not change, lofty ideals notwithstanding.

To clearly see more human follies than even Modern Wisdom illuminates, it helps to be outside society. An outcast even, which this reviewer is in multiple ways.

Intellect is best magnanimous, so five stars. The host is articulate, well informed, intelligent, expansive, and thoughtful.

And there is merit to lofty ideals, so the Modern Wisdom platform can be a springboard for seeing our species’ often near unanimous blind spots. But this is usually reserved for the few who journey outside society—by choice or by force.
