Around Lancaster: Adam Grim Looks at Columbia and Tony Gorick Talks Tales From the Shadows

Spooky season is upon us as the leaves begin to fall and we start seeing pumpkins popping up on porches throughout the county. Adam Grim and I are joined by Tony Gorick, the sales and marketing manager at Decades, Lancaster city’s barcade and restaurant. Tony organized a special weekend long event called “Tales From The Shadows: A Cryptid & Paranormal Weekend” in collaboration with several other downtown businesses. Adam also recounted a few incredible cultural events that went down last month in Lancaster: Restaurant Week, a series of shows called Blank from Prima Theatre, and ROOTED, a contemporary dance performance by Luna Dance Company. We also discussed a new hotel in Columbia, a Hampton Inn by Hilton opening in an old potato chip factory that will include a rooftop lounge overlooking the Susquehanna River. As always, there’s way more going on than we can fit on one episode. Be sure to drop a line and let us know what you’re looking forward to this spooky season!  Thanks for listening! I’m seriously winded at how much is happening around Lancaster as we roll into October, 2026. Katherine Horst, owner of Horst Art Center in Manheim joined us for our monthly arts update. She and her husband Jason, will be taking over a space at Ewell Plaza, opening a new arts focused business called Makers, that will have gallery space, plus 13 new art studio spaces available starting in October. Coming up on October 17th and 18th is Lancaster’s Fall Artwalk, which is a full weekend celebrating the arts. It’s a self-guided tour of galleries all around Lancaster City, organized by the Lancaster City Art Collective. Ruby Mundok is back as well, bringing our monthly update from Lancaster City’s tourism department. The city will continue their Friday Friday programming at Ewell Plaza and Binns Park. On Saturday, October 3, the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration will be held at Binns Park followed by the One World Festival on Sunday, October 4. Phew! Food and Film: Hilary Mace & Joel Chandler on Good Eats While Eating Good and Ron Moore on Films

We’re talking about food and film. On the food side, I’m joined by Hilary Mace, the founder of The Scarlet Runner, a wildly popular catering business based in Lancaster between 2011 and 2021. Hilary closed down during the pandemic and left the area to live in remote locations in Arizona and Idaho. While she returned to the Lancaster area about two years ago, she just recently relaunched The Scarlet Runner. Hilary and I are joined by Lancaster fitness coach Joel Chandler, who recently published The Lancaster Nutrition Handbook. It’s a guide to over a dozen Lancaster City restaurants from the perspective of eating for your fitness goals. The guide includes calorie and macro estimates for some of your favorite restaurants in Lancaster. Ron Moore, a Lancaster County film enthusiast and the host of the Why This Film? podcast, joined me to break down the Lancaster film scene. Ron will be back each month to report on special screenings, original film projects, and events wrapped around film in Lancaster County. As usual there’s a lot going on around Lancaster and a ton of great restaurants to enjoy. Be sure to get out and support our incredible locally-owned restaurant scene. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: The Candy Factory (TCF Coworking + Social Club) https://clubtcf.com So Good Lancaster https://sogoodlancaster.com Food The Scarlet Runner (Hilary Mace) https://thescarletrunner.com The Lancaster Nutrition Handbook (Joel Chandler) https://utu.synchronycoaching.net/ Lancaster Central Market https://centralmarketlancaster.com Souvlaki Boys Grill https://www.souvlakiboys.com Himalayan Curry & Grill https://himalayanlancaster.com 551 West https://551west.com Chellas Arepa Kitchen https://eatchellas.com Film Why This Film? Around Lancaster: Adam Grim & Jenn Knepper chatting about Lancaster Review and Gifts That Give Hope

It’s Labor Day week and that means school is back in season, the days are getting a little shorter, and (hopefully) the weather will cool off just a bit in the coming weeks. On the program today we welcome Adam Grim from The Lancaster Review and Jenn Knepper from Gifts That Give Hope for a chat about a bunch of stuff happening around Lancaster County in September. Adam filled us in on what’s been happening at The Lancaster Review, a weekly newsletter and online local news page covering events and culture all around the county. He gave us a sneak peek at some stories he and his team are working on for upcoming issues. Adam will be a regular contributor on the show to keep us up to date on Lancaster county happenings and profiles of the characters that make up the cultural fabric of Lancaster. Gifts That Give Hope is an alternative gift fair where you can skip the Black Friday sales and put your money back into our local community through donations to area non-profits and purchasing goods from social conscience local vendors for the holidays. For its 19th year, the fair has been moved up this year to October 10 at 10am, instead of its usual schedule in late November or early December. Don’t miss it! September is going to be busy and beautiful. Be sure to get out and about in Lancaster County as we wind down summer and look forward to fairs, football, and sweater weather! - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: The Candy Factory (TCF)  https://clubtcf.com Chellas  https://eatchellas.com Lancaster Review  https://lancasterreview.com Chellas Arepa Kitchen  https://eatchellas.com Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster  https://giftsthatgivehopelancaster.org One World Festival  https://oneworldfestivallancaster.org Farm & Home Center (gift fair venue)  https://farmandhomecenter.org We want to hear from YOU! Art and the City: Ruby Mundok and Katherine Horst Share Updates from Lancaster City and the Arts Scene

It's the launch of season 2 of the So Good Lancaster podcast and we're mixing things up. This is the first episode of our new format. First off, we're upping the cadence of the show to weekly and expanding to a video format. Phew! Second off, each month we're going to be focusing on recurring topics: First week — art and updates from Lancaster City Second week — happenings around the county Third week — the Lancaster music scene Fourth week — film and food On the program today we welcome Ruby Mundok, Social Media and Tourism Marketing Manager for the City of Lancaster and Katherine Horst, owner of Horst Arts Center, located in Manheim. We chatted about the abundance of events coordinated by the city for September, including Welcoming Week, a nationally recognized initiative that is coming to Lancaster through a celebration highlighting our diverse culture, neighborhoods, businesses, & residents. Among a ton of other events we chatted about the first Capital Day Festival, coming to Penn Square on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Speaking of September 26, it's shaking out to be one of the busier days of the month. Katherine shared that two arts festivals are also scheduled for that day in Lancaster County, including the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show and Columbia's "Art in the Park" in the Locust Street Park. As always, the annual Labor Day arts festival at Long's Park is on tap this week along with another First Friday in downtown Lancaster, that has been a staple event in the city for over two decades. Bottom line, get out and enjoy September while we still have the nice warm weather! Lancaster's Food Truck Scene

While digging into the Lancaster food truck scene, an interesting theme emerged. The owners of food trucks, and there are many in Lancaster and the surrounding areas, don’t see each other primarily as competition, but more as part of a collective of sorts. Food trucks can’t be at more than one event at a time, so trucks of similar items find themselves referring each other to events, and trucks with complementary items find themselves at the same events and provide snacks for each other. I loved hearing about this sense of collaboration in the local food truck scene. Danielle Landis, from Lickity Split and W Donuts, is a 20 year veteran of the scene who helps organize food truck festivals around the region. Danielle joined me in the So Good Media studio to chat about the ups and downs of working a truck, the camaraderie of the owners, and a few of the annual food truck festivals to enjoy. Cameos in this episode include David Hiester from W Donuts and Nathan Claycomb from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. recording during previous interviews for the podcast. Our So Good Music feature is “Oh Jeanine” by Sun Not Yellow, including a chat with songwriter and front man Jesse Barki. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: Lickity Split W Donuts Joe on the Go Coffee Co. Community Through Women's Sports

I had the opportunity to learn about the Dutchland Derby Rollers and the Thorns Rugby Club at the Stuff To Do Fair back in January. While I had heard of the Rollers over the years, I had no idea there was a women’s adult rugby club here in Lancaster. Curious, I started digging into these two teams and quickly began to realize that these types of adult sports serve a much bigger purpose than scoring points and claiming bragging rights. They form friendships, provide opportunities for learning new skills, and build community. Through these two teams I was introduced to our very own women’s ice hockey team, the Lancaster Reapers. It turns out that this trio of adult women’s sports teams recently formed an informal collaborative alliance to help each other spread the word, grow attendance and interest, and even fundraise together. I wanted to learn more, so I welcomed Diosanny Rivera from the Dutchland Derby Rollers, Kelly Leibolt and Zimmy from Lancaster Reapers, and Alex Tarleton and Eva Dombrowski from the Knightmare and Thorns Ruby Clubs to the program to talk about their respective sports and teams, and find out why these kinds of teams are important. - Jason (all of these words came from my brain) Links: Dutchland Derby Rollers Lancaster Reapers Thorns Rugby We want to hear from YOU!
