Episode 40: Why we suck and debunking dog training Myths!

Episode 40 gets into some of the biggest myths, misconceptions, and ideological battles in dog training. Sean and Jon work through responses from the Working Dogs & Whiskey community and tackle everything from yelling commands and the old-school “alpha” mentality to alpha rolls, pressure in training, punishment, motivation, and the never-ending debate between balanced and force-free training. Does pressure automatically create conflict? Does being louder make your dog listen better? Who actually decides what’s rewarding or punishing—the trainer or the dog? And when does commitment to training philosophy start getting in the way of training the individual dog in front of you? The conversation also gets into mistakes they’ve made as trainers, how their philosophies have evolved through experience, and why good dog training requires more than picking a side and defending it. Plus, before any of that happens, Jon decides Sean apparently needs some socialization and exposure therapy of his own before AT K9. No absolutes. No one-size-fits-all answers. Just an honest conversation about training dogs, questioning what you think you know, and staying open-minded enough to adapt. Episode 38: Rebuilding the Doberman with Gerald “The Doberman Dogfather”

In Episode 38 of Working Dogs and Whiskey, Sean and Jon sit down with Gerald Antoine, better known as the Doberman Dogfather and the man behind European Doberman Stud. Gerald shares how his first Doberman entered his life during a difficult period involving divorce, bankruptcy, and foreclosureand how one exceptional stud dog, Alonzo, ultimately helped him keep the lights on. That experience sparked Gerald’s mission to preserve the Doberman as it was originally intended: a capable, confident, personal-protection dog with the character to work. The conversation explores what separates a visually impressive dog from a truly functional one. Gerald explains why recovery, environmental confidence, food drive, prey drive, and the willingness to work through pressure matter more than appearance alone. He also discusses why every stud carrying his name must complete protection training and earn a legitimate working title.
