The £13 Million Challenge, and Why We Are Now Praying for Rain

With harvest behind us, the focus is now a relentless eight day push to get the cultivations finished before we move onto the new farms we have taken on. In this episode we battle on through rock hard, bone dry ground, and after a lifetime of complaining about rain, find ourselves doing something that feels almost alien, praying for it. Everything now hinges on a good soaking to get the crop drilled. We also open up the business side in a way most farms never would. We spend around £13 million a year on inputs, and James explains why finding savings has become the single biggest opportunity in the business right now, more valuable than farming itself, along with a rather painful story about just how much prices can vary. There is honest frustration too at yet more fly tipping, and a hard look at why the promised fines are proving toothless even when the culprits are caught. Elsewhere the welding course pays off in a breakdown, the tracks and cultivators keep the workshop busy, and there is a birthday to mark. From the business of saving money to a desperate wait for rain, this is another honest look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. After Harvest, the Big Clean Down and a Frustrating Battle With the Mill

The combines may have finished, but on a farm this size the work never really stops. In this episode we take on the big and rarely seen job of cleaning down after harvest, blowing down and washing the combines and chaser bins, converting the fuel, and getting everything put away properly before the rodents move in. We also turn straight into the next cycle, mapping and cultivating the new farms we have taken on, soil sampling, and getting seed beds ready for drilling. There is some fascinating detail along the way, including a near 50% difference in fuel use between two tractors doing the same job, and a look at how we clean and colour sort the mustard, with a new sorter on its way from Italy. We also share a frustrating and honest story from the grain market, where wheat we sold at £270 a tonne is now proving a battle to shift at £200, after a mill started rejecting it over chaff. Behind it all, the new fertiliser yard drainage goes in, a clever cultivator project takes shape, and the ever reliable workshop keeps the show on the road. From the job nobody sees to an honest word on the market, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. Harvest 2026 Is Over, and the Combines Come Home

Harvest 2026 is finally over. In this episode we cut the very last of the crop, the twice drilled mustard and a tiny field of seed, and bring an extraordinary, relentless and remarkably early season to a close. It is an emotional one, as the combines make their way home in convoy for the final time this year, with the first proper rain arriving almost to the minute, and James reflects on the relief, the quiet sadness, and the wonderful team that got it all in safely. There is no real rest though, as the farm turns straight into the next cycle. We follow the cultivations and straw clearing racing ahead, get an honest and rather comical update on the accommodation trailer build, the self titled trailer of horrors, and look in on the seed shed and the new fertiliser yard as they take shape. There is even a teaser about some new land joining the operation. To everyone who has followed this harvest with us, and to the team and the businesses who supported it, thank you. From the last field to the combines coming home, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. From Field to Pint, Growing Our Own Barley to Make Beer

This week we harvest one of our most unusual crops, a small field of Arrow spring barley grown for one reason only, to brew our own beer for the Cereals show. We are joined by Rob from RAGT, who has spent years breeding barley, to talk through what makes this variety special, and he even climbs aboard the Lexion to cut it himself. We also work out just how many pints you can get from a single field, and set ourselves a rather ambitious target for next year. It is an honest look at a dry season too, as we explain why so much of the region's barley is struggling to hit malting spec this year, and what that means for the crop. Away from the beer, there is a clever project on the go as we cut a new cultivator down to size, a comedy horse riding lesson, a breakdown scare on one of the tractors, and an update on the accommodation trailer nearing completion. With only the mustard left to cut, the end of harvest is genuinely in sight. From field to pint to the last few acres, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. Nearly the End of Harvest, and Two New 18 Metre Drills on the Way

With the oats finished, the main harvest is all but done, and only the mustard is left to cut. In this episode the team finally earns a well deserved rest after a relentless, rain free run, and we start to turn our attention to next season. We head into the seed shed to explain how producing our own seed saves the business around £200,000 a year, and get the ground and the plan ready for drilling this year's oilseed rape. There is a real sense of gearing up for what comes next. Two new 18 metre drills are being built and are already on their way, a new cultivator joins the fleet, and the new fertiliser yard is nearly finished. We also stay on top of the jobs that never stop, from a run of tyre failures and the search for a fix, to welcoming a new horse to the farm. We finish, as ever, with an honest look at the grain market, where the prices are still not telling the story this difficult year deserves. From a major money saver to the first signs of next season, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. The End Is in Sight, and the Fertiliser Store Is Finally Complete

The end of the main harvest is finally in sight. In this episode we push through the last of the wheat and turn to the spring oats, with the whole team hoping to wrap up the bulk of the year and earn a well deserved rest. We are joined by Tim, a Claas combine specialist who travels the world setting machines up, and he explains why this extraordinary dry season has our harvest feeling far more like Australia than England, and the counterintuitive way you have to set a combine to cope. Behind the combines the work goes on. We battle to cultivate rock hard, cracked ground that is proving even tougher than last year, deal with a dramatic chaser bin breakdown, and finally complete the new fertiliser store, with all twenty four tanks now in place after years in the planning. We also take a moment to remember three good people the farming world has lost recently, who meant a great deal to us. From an expert's eye on a strange season to the last big push of harvest, this is another honest look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. Harvesting on the Road in Lincolnshire, and the Team's Verdict on the CR11

Harvest is on the road, and this week finds us up in Lincolnshire pushing through the wheat and the beans. In this episode we take stock of where we are with the end genuinely in sight, walk the beans and explain the difference between the feed and human consumption markets, and take an honest look at a turbulent grain market where even the mention of peace talks is moving the price. We also get into the business side that rarely gets shown, from selling the barley and the fuel and fertiliser buying decisions, to the accommodation and logistics that keep a team running hundreds of miles from home. There is a demo of a new version of the Joker cultivator to weigh up, a few breakdowns to fix, and the team give their honest verdict on the New Holland CR11 they drove last week. We Demo the New Holland CR11, the Biggest Combine in the World

We have a very special guest on the farm this week. Ernest Doe kindly brought down the brand new New Holland CR11, billed as the biggest and most powerful combine in the world, along with a 45 foot MacDon header, for us to put through its paces. In this episode James, Kieran and Sandy all take a turn at the wheel, and we get a proper technical walkthrough of what makes this machine and its radar controlled residue management so different, and how it stacks up against our fleet of Claas Lexions. There is talk too of the 61 foot header to come, and what a step up like that would really mean. For a bit of fun we also line all five combines up in the field together, with the New Holland flanked by our four Claas machines. Away from the demo, the wheat keeps coming in, with the early drilled crops holding up well in the drought, and we get an update on the BBM accommodation trailer conversion taking shape. There is progress on the house too, and preparations to move the whole operation up to Lincolnshire. From the world's biggest combine to five machines in one field, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
