    Life Unscripted - S2E05 - Queen(s)

    Immigration is often discussed as a divisive political issue, but the new Independent feature QUEEN(S) brings the conversation down to just one person’s story and circumstances. Alix Kendall chats with Chi Hua Lee-Secci who plays “Sisi,” an undocumented Chinese woman trying to build an ordinary life in Queens, and actor Bill Engst who plays a sympathetic widower helping Sisi in her journey. The two share personal stories during filming of Queen(s), and what they hope people will take away from the film. QUEEN(S) will make its World Premiere September 17 2026 at the historic ⁠Riverview Theater⁠ in Minneapolis. The film’s creators, cast and producers are honoring the Twin Cities for its 2026 immigration struggles, and the courage shown by its citizens.     MN Sec. of State Simon on ICE and elections. Upcoming elections in Minnesota have many voters afraid of what they may find when they head to the polls. Minneapolis, and other cities in the metro area gained national attention following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, and Alex Pretti in January of 2026. The protest in St. Paul that drew an estimated 250,000 people was an extraordinary pushback to the Federal Government’s siege on Minnesota, known as “Operation Metro Surge.” The fear of ICE agents showing up at the polls, intimidating voters, and arresting people deemed an immigrant ICE, is on the minds of Minnesotans.     Alix Kendall unpacks the history of political and social activism in Minnesota, and dissects it with an award-winning journalist. Lori Sturdevant is a retired editorial writer, and columnist covering state and local government for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. She’s also an occasional columnist. She is the author of dozens of books including “When Republicans Were Progressive,” with Dave Durenberger, and “Martin Sabo, The Making of the Modern Legislature.” In this episode of “Life Unscripted,” Lori talks about how the tradition of Minnesota’s civil engagement played a big role in its response to ICE agents in Minneapolis during “Operation Metro Surge.” Alix and Lori dive into the current battles within the Democratic (DFL) party including Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan running for U-S Senate, and Senator Amy Klouchar’s decision to run for Minnesota Governor after Gov. Tim Walz dropped out of the race. Lori also looks back at how the Republican Party in Minnesota has changed over the years, and how recent violence including the assassination of MN Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman, has permanently shattered the fabric of the DFL.     This episode marks the beginning of season two of “Life Unscripted!” Podcast host Alix Kendall celebrates the new season by bringing back her very first guest of the podcast, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. You may know Mayor Jacob Frey from his fired up speech telling ICE agents in Minneapolis to “get the Fu*k out of here.” This was in January 2026 as things were amping up during “Operation Metro Surge.” Minneapolis was showing the world how to push back against the Trump administration’s federal law enforcement operation, and he was the face leading the charge. This is a look back of some of the key decisions that were made in responding to ICE agents, including criticism of the Minneapolis Police Department, and its Police chief Brian O’Hara. (This interview was recorded BEFORE MPD Police Chief O’Hara resigned after allegations O’Hara interfered in an investigation involving his alleged sexual misconduct.) MELINDA VOSS is one of the state coordinators for BRAVER ANGELS MINNESOTA. She retired from the Des Moines Register and Tribune after 26 years as a reporter, and has taught journalism at three universities. She leans BLUE.
