    138: We are NOT Anti-Fall Weddings, What Does Michigan Want in a Compliance Staffer? Plus, Week 5 College Football Preview

    Send us Fan Mail It's October, Fall is in the air and it's a great time to celebrate love. I'm off to a Fall Saturday wedding this weekend and while some on the internet have opined how unfair it is for a couple to choose to say their vows while college football is being played, I will not rail against the practice. On the contrary, with technology being what it is now, and have the perspective of the years behind me, I won't be sulking in a corner during the wedding. The college football world will go one without me for one day, and I can easily catch up afterward.  On today's episode we also discuss the PCSA getting through the Senate and how the Student Athlete Advisory Committee is in favor of the House voting it through, but that may not even begin to happen until November. Michigan posted a compliance position in their athletic department and I couldn't help but glance over what they say they are looking for in a candidate to join their office which has probably been through a trial or two in the past 6-7 years. Finally, we look at the games, the high profile QB duel in Starkville, the upset hopeful in Iowa City, and the curious case of Don Julio at Auburn as they prepare to take on Tennessee and their SEC-confirmed illegal onside kick.

    137: Vicious Targeting, Simulating "Using the Restroom", Drop-Kick Onside Kicks, Clocks Again In Ann Arbor: A Wild Week 4 by the Rules Recap

    Send us Fan Mail So many rules items on the field to talk about in Week 4 of College Football. We let those moments be our guide for recapping what transpired.  In LA, a blatant targeting hit on Dante Moore caused a response from just about everyone, but it was the actions after the hit that drew most of the ire. We have botched replay review in Bloomington Friday night, and an intentional grounding that led to a 4th and 45(!) with the game on the line. Iowa needed an amazing string of plays to get to their game-winning TD as the clock expired and yes, the clock was and issue and we almost had ANOTHER controversy in Ann Arbor over the final seconds. But the two big occurrences were in Knoxville as an anemic offensive game turned hectic in the final mintues. First, Colin Simmons dominated on the field of play and then acted like he was urinating on it! A personal foul for the ages. Then, the drop kick punt onsides that appeared to be illegal, then wasn't but actually probably was took place. It's never dull in College Football and that includes the rules of the games themselves!

    136: College Football Does Not Live in a Bubble, It's Also Doing Okay. Plus, Week 4 Preview

    Send us Fan Mail Week 4 is on the way, and it brings a great slate of games. Before the previewing, I get to pontificating about the state of college football. It's not all sunshine and roses for some programs out there (see: Fayetteville, AR), and while there is more opportunity to compete and win, and turn things around quickly, when college football is bad somewhere, there is a tendency to say "this is the state of things." Certainly, teams like Mississippi State are not thinking negatively about their current situation, but when paper bags go over heads in the SEC, the think-pieces come out. Is college football in that bad of a place? Is asking for money and using that money in one manner that different than another?  Meanwhile, the ratings keep climbing, the money keeps moving (alcohol sales included in Oxford) and the season is just heating up. I guess I'm still looking for the collapse the talking heads are talking about.

    135: NC State Fails the Safety Dance, and Ole Miss Gets Revenge

    Send us Fan Mail College Football Week 3! What a wild weekend it was, it had everything that makes college sports great. "Protect" college sports you say? The only thing it needs protection from are those trying to "save" it. The rules of a safety in football are quite clear, especially when you are trying to intentionally take one. There is only one pathway to the other team taking the lead, and that is turning the ball over to them. The ending of the NC State-Vanderbilt game will be discussed for years to come. We talk about how the Wolfpack failed the simple procedure and brought their fans yet another massive heartbreak. In Oxford, the Ole Miss fans were loud and in the end jubilant, and we are thankful no one did anything dangerous. The game itself was great on the field as well, with Trinidad Chambliss dropping lasers during the game and F bomb after. We also discuss the rest of the action across college football, decisive wins, narrow escapes, comebacks, weather delays, letdowns by ranked teams. It had it all. It sets up a great week 4 ahead.

    134: The Biggest Game Stands Alone in Week 3 of College Football

    Send us Fan Mail It's the Thursday before week 3 and everything points to Oxford this Saturday for the most emotionally-charged college football game in quite awhile.  Lane Kiffin can downplay it all he wants, his team is the favorite and the environment will be insane. We talk about that game and preview the rest of the match-ups that have our attention starting tonight and through Saturday. We also hit on the PCSA, as it does move initially through the Senate with more to come.  Texas has not been covering itself in glory starting from the minutes after they got their biggest win in decades; Coach Sark began it by blowing off Holly Rowe and then Arch Manning continued the weird vibes with his press conference comments. He has since apologized, and while that is fine, Holly Rowe has unfortunately suffered the brunt of the internet mongrels. Also for discussion is the Athletic's great article on estimated College Football Program player compensation budgets that was published recently. Here is a gift link one of the writers shared.  Should be an chaotic but hopefully safe Saturday.

    133: Beware the Pushers of the Protect College Sports Act, and the Week 2 College Football Recap

    Send us Fan Mail It's time to talk about the Protect College Sports Act....again. Not my desire but with the latest tactic of full on commercials from (paid?) spokesmen Saban and Sanders, along with Gameday allowing Ted Cruz to talk for 10 minutes on Gameday while getting booed and chanted at, it left me little choice. With the bill now up to 230 pages in length and the desperate way in which the rhetoric of those wanting it passed has become, it's time to know just how damaging and limiting it would be to college sports as a whole.  We also do get to the games on the field, some interesting rules items from this past weekend's games. -Make facemask a reviewable penalty! -Replay review saves Wake Forest to the heartbreak of Purdue -Texas used a rule to stay cool in the Austin heat that they can't use once they enter SEC play (heard on the Bunch Formation pod) Also, the SEC is dominating the out of conference contests this season, and it portends well for them getting the most teams in the field, possibly with the most losses.

    132: Welcome to the College Football Zone: Chaos Thrives on the Field, in the Courtroom, and in the Booth as We Head to Week 2

    Send us Fan Mail The College Football season is just beginning and yet it feels like time and space are slipping away from us. Can we get back to reality with a wonderful new slate of games for week 2, highlighted by Ohio State and Texas. Can Michigan pull themselves together against Oklahoma? Is Alabama really a contender in the SEC? Can the ACC get a solid win against another power 4 conference?  These questions and more will be explored in today's episode. We must of course revisit the Western Michigan clock issue, since the MAC Conference decided to ask the FBS Oversight Committee to change the official outcome. While that will not happen, at least they got their objection on the record. One of volleyball's premiere events at Wrigley Field had a game cancelled due to humidity - the heat has taken a toll on college sports thus far this year. The NCAA Football Officials also got moving on sending out a memo to all conferences that the protocol to look at the broadcast program feed clock on replays is now down in writing. Elsewhere, the Big 12 quietly drops their lawsuit against Texas Tech, and after the SEC sent an amended filing in their federal suit against LSU, Lane and company finally backed down and will not add the two players from the pros onto their roster. It took for the conference to threaten expulsion for the Tigers to finally capitulate, but as the presidents of the conference meet it is not clear if the Bayou Bengals will escape any punishment for their charade.

    131: Week 1 College Football Recap: The Featured Rules Item is The Big Ten's Hidden Clock!

    Send us Fan Mail Week 1 is all but in the books (1 game left tonight), but the action on the field did not disappoint, but of course the rules of the game execution did disappoint. Right off the bat in this college football season we had a controversy, then an explanation which left the fallout of who is looking at one game clock and why is the game clock the replay officials is looking at different from the one everyone else can see? We get into the crazy ending in Ann Arbor which left Western Michigan on the wrong side of a game that will be talked about in College Football perpetuity,  We also will hit the other games that grabbed our attention, with of course some notes on the rules items we noticed during them as well. Some big statements were made, including down in Baton Rouge where Lane Kiffin went salted earth on Dabo and Clemson. Plenty of intrigue and discourse going on but ultimately the two players from NFL action that LSU wanted to add to the roster where kept off, for now, as the SEC has sued LSU in federal court. Lots to discuss, including the ACC's dismal performance and how it will affect the rest of their season. Huzzah for the return of games on the field, and darned if we can't keep the rules discrepancies from still occurring. That's chaos, that's College Football.
