    63. When Your Past Speaks Louder Than Your Purpose

Sometimes the loudest voice competing with your purpose comes from something that happened years ago. You may love God, know you are forgiven, and believe His Word, yet still hear familiar messages saying you are unqualified, permanently damaged, or destined to fail again. Those messages can quietly influence how you interpret opportunities, relationships, and your future. Originally created for the EPIC Women’s Conference, this foundational episode is now being shared with the full Day One of Sobriety community because the struggle to separate identity from history affects people of every age and background. Through personal testimony, the story of Gideon, biblical truth, and a practical understanding of learned thought patterns, you will discover why familiar does not always mean true. Your past may explain some of the patterns you developed, but it does not have the authority to define your identity or determine your purpose.   IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL DISCOVER Why Christians can know they are forgiven and still feel stuck in an identity shaped by shame How past experiences can become a lens, produce an identity label, and create a limit Why an old protective pattern can interfere with growth in a new season What Gideon’s response to God reveals about history, confidence, and calling How awareness helps separate a practiced message from the truth God is speaking   SCRIPTURE AND MIND RENEWAL Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works He prepared for us. Our history does not cancel that identity or remove us from God’s purpose. Gideon struggled to see himself according to God’s calling. When God called him a mighty warrior, Gideon answered through the lens of his family history and perceived inadequacy. God responded with a greater truth: “I will be with you” (Judges 6). Romans 12:2 shows us how we begin living from the identity we have received in Christ. Transformation involves the renewing of our minds. Salvation establishes our identity, while mind renewal teaches us to think, choose, and live from it.   YOUR RENEWAL PRACTICE: NOTICE THE MESSAGE When you imagine taking a step toward healing, growth, or something God has placed on your heart, notice what message from your past becomes louder. Ask yourself: “When I begin moving toward God’s purpose, what message from my past tries to stop me?” Write down the first message that comes to mind. It might sound like: “I will fail again.” “I am not qualified.” “I have waited too long.” “My voice does not matter.” Do not argue with the message or try to solve it yet. Simply name it. An old thought surfacing does not mean you have failed or that the message is true. Awareness helps you recognize the difference between a thought you have practiced and the identity God has given you.   CONTINUE THE JOURNEY This Core Episode provides the foundation for EP64, What Are You Agreeing With? A Guided Identity Reset. In the Application Episode, you will learn how to recognize one message from your past, reveal the agreement beneath it, examine what it has produced, realign it with God’s truth, and reinforce that truth through one faithful action.   CONNECT WITH DAY ONE OF SOBRIETY 🗞️Join the DAY ONE INSIDER for weekly encouragement and practical tools for mind renewal: https://bit.ly/4hEYsI4 💬Connect with the Mind Renewal Made Simple Facebook Community: https://bit.ly/mindrenewalsolutions 🌐 Learn more about Day One of Sobriety Ministries: https://day1ofsobriety.org/ 📖 Explore Brenda Kennison’s book, Trapped in Your Thoughts: https://a.co/d/0b03SCtb Ready to begin a relationship with Jesus? https://tryjesuschallenge.com/   DISCLAIMER The information shared in this podcast is for educational and informational purposes only. 62. How to Defuse Anger: The R.U.L.E. Method

You recognize the tightening in your jaw or the heat rising in your chest. Maybe you feel yourself beginning to shut down and pull away. You know anger is taking over, but you still do not know what to do next. Awareness matters, but awareness alone does not change a your response. You need a practical off-ramp between recognizing the signal and automatically exploding, withdrawing, or saying something you regret. This Application Episode introduces the R.U.L.E. Method: Recognize, Understand, Loosen, and Engage. You will learn how a small physical action can help your reasoning brain rejoin the moment so you can respond from truth instead of autopilot. You do not need to practice every step perfectly. This week begins with one manageable response that can help you stay present when the anger alarm fires.   IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL DISCOVER Why recognizing an anger signal does not automatically change your response How anger can temporarily move faster than your reasoning and decision-making Why the R.U.L.E. Method begins by working with your body The difference between suppressing anger and ruling over your response How one slow breath or loosened muscle can create space for a wiser choice   SCRIPTURE AND MIND RENEWAL In Genesis 4, God warns Cain that sin is crouching at his door and desires to have him, but Cain must rule over it. God does not tell Cain to pretend the anger is not there. He calls Cain to remain in authority over what he does with it. Ruling over anger does not mean suppressing the emotion or allowing it to control your words and actions. It means recognizing what is happening and yielding your response to God. Galatians 5 identifies self-control as fruit produced by the Holy Spirit. This means you are not left to manage anger through willpower alone. As you yield to the Holy Spirit and participate in the renewal process, you can practice a different response. When anger has already led to harmful words or disconnection, Ephesians 4:26 reminds us not to allow anger to remain unresolved. Returning to repair what was damaged is also part of ruling over anger.   YOUR RENEWAL PRACTICE: LOOSEN THE ALARM The complete R.U.L.E. Method includes four steps: Recognize the signal Understand what may be underneath it Loosen the physical tension Engage from truth instead of autopilot This week, do not pressure yourself to use all four steps perfectly. Choose one situation where you commonly feel anger rise or feel the urge to shut down. When you notice the first signal, practice Loosen: Unclench your jaw Drop your shoulders Uncross your arms Plant both feet on the floor Take one slow breath Name one thing you can see in the room If needed, say, “Give me one second,” before responding. This small physical action helps communicate to your nervous system that you are safe enough to remain present. It creates space for the reasoning part of your brain to participate in what happens next. You may remember the practice after the moment has passed. That does not mean you failed. Repeatedly recognizing and practicing the response helps strengthen a healthier pathway over time.   CONTINUE THE JOURNEY EP62 is the Application Episode that builds upon EP61: Anger: Why We Explode or Shut Down. EP61 explains why anger can appear as either an explosion or a shutdown and introduces Signal Awareness. Listening to that Core Episode will help you recognize the earliest signs of anger before applying the R.U.L.E. Method.   DAY ONE MINDSET SERIES: Episodes 50 through 52 explain why mind renewal matters and introduce the complete DAY and ONE frameworks. 61. Anger: Why We Explode or Shut Down

Maybe it was not really about the spilled cereal. Your voice came out sharper than you intended. You shut down during a conversation. You slammed a cabinet door, walked away, or said something you regretted later. Then came the question: “Where did that reaction come from?” Anger is often treated as a character flaw or spiritual failure, especially within the church. But feeling angry is not the same as sinning in anger. Anger can be a signal that something underneath the surface needs your attention. In this Core Episode, Brenda explores why some people explode while others shut down, what may be happening in the brain when anger rises, and how Scripture teaches us to recognize anger without allowing it to rule us. You will also begin practicing Signal Awareness, a foundational mind-renewal skill that can help you notice anger’s physical warning signs and identify what the emotion may be protecting.   IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL DISCOVER Why anger itself is not a sin, although our response to it can become harmful How anger may be connected to exhaustion, fear, crossed boundaries, disappointment, or feeling unheard Why shutting down, withdrawing, or becoming sarcastic can also be expressions of anger What happens when the brain’s threat response activates before the reasoning part of the brain fully engages How Signal Awareness can help you recognize anger before it becomes an explosion or shutdown   SCRIPTURE AND MIND RENEWAL When Cain became angry, God did not tell him to deny the emotion. He asked, “Why are you angry?” and warned him not to allow sin to rule what happened next (Genesis 4:6–7). Ephesians 4:26–27 makes the same distinction: “In your anger do not sin.” Scripture acknowledges that anger will come while teaching us to respond to it wisely. James 1:19–20 instructs us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Slow does not mean never. Slow is a pace we can learn to practice. These passages remind us that anger is not something we must hide in shame. It is something we can bring into God’s light, examine honestly, and learn to manage as our minds are renewed.   YOUR RENEWAL PRACTICE: SIGNAL AWARENESS Choose one relationship in which you are most likely to explode or shut down. The next time you feel the first flicker of anger, pause and notice where it appears in your body. It may feel like a tightening jaw, heat in your chest, clenched hands, heaviness, or the urge to withdraw. Then ask: What am I feeling in my body? What might be underneath this anger? What could this reaction be revealing? You may recognize exhaustion, fear, disappointment, disrespect, a crossed boundary, or the feeling that you are not being heard. Do not wait until you have already exploded or completely shut down. Your practice is to catch one familiar signal a little earlier and connect it to what may be happening beneath the surface. You are not trying to correct every reaction at once. You are strengthening your awareness so you can begin creating space between the emotion and your response. Awareness comes before transformation. You can wire out whatever you’ve wired in.   CONTINUE THE JOURNEY This is the Core Episode in a two-part conversation about anger. In EP62, Brenda will introduce a practical, in-the-moment response for when the heat is already rising or you feel yourself beginning to withdraw.   CONNECT WITH DAY ONE OF SOBRIETY 🗞️Join the DAY ONE INSIDER for weekly encouragement and practical tools for mind renewal: https://bit.ly/4hEYsI4 💬Connect with the Mind Renewal Made Simple Facebook Community: https://bit.ly/mindrenewalsolutions 🌐 Learn more about Day One of Sobriety Ministries: https://day1ofsobriety.org/ 📖 Explore Brenda Kennison’s book, Trapped in Your Thoughts: https://a.co/d/0b03SCtb Ready to begin a relationship with Jesus? https://tryjesuschallenge.com/ 🤩 If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may be carrying shame about anger or struggling with a pattern of exploding or shutting down.   DISCLAIMER The information shared in this podcast is for educational and informational purposes only. 60. Why Christians Need Community for Mind Renewal and Lasting Change

Mind renewal does not happen in isolation. Although renewing your mind is deeply personal, God designed healing and transformation to flourish through relationship and community. In this episode, Brenda explores why consuming Christian content is not the same as being truly known, supported, and encouraged by others. Drawing from the early church, Scripture, and years of coaching experience, she explains why safe relationships are essential to lasting freedom. You’ll be invited to consider who knows the real you, who walks beside you when life becomes difficult, and how God may be calling you to offer encouragement and hope to someone else.   🔑 Key Episode Insights God created us for relationship with Him and with one another. Even before sin entered the world, He declared that it was not good for humanity to be alone. Healing often accelerates when you feel safe enough to be honest, known, and supported by trusted people. Podcasts, books, and online content can encourage and teach you, but they cannot replace people who pray with you, challenge you, and help carry your burdens. The early church practiced discipleship as a shared lifestyle through teaching, fellowship, prayer, meals, encouragement, and practical support. Isolation can reinforce shame, fear, and unhealthy thought patterns. Community helps restore perspective and reminds you of your identity in Christ. Your mind renewal journey is not only about what you receive. God can also use your experience, wisdom, and healing to encourage someone else.   🧠 Why This Matters Your brain and nervous system are influenced by the relationships surrounding you. Safe, supportive connections can help reduce isolation, strengthen emotional regulation, and create an environment where healthier thoughts and responses can develop. Biblical community also helps you live from your identity in Christ. When fear, shame, or disappointment distort what you believe, trusted people can remind you of truth and encourage you to keep moving toward healing and freedom.   🛠 Practical Mind Renewal Tool(s) This week's reflection exercise invites you to spend time with the Holy Spirit exploring three powerful questions: Who knows the real you? Not the version you present on social media. Not the version that smiles and says, “I’m fine.” Who knows the person behind the smile? Who walks beside you? Who has permission to ask you hard questions? Who can lovingly challenge you when you’re drifting? Who reminds you of who you are when you’ve forgotten? Who are you helping? Mind renewal is not only something we receive. It is something we share. Who in your life may need the encouragement, wisdom, and hope God has been building in you? As you sit with these questions, ask the Lord to show you whether your next step is reaching out, allowing someone closer, joining a supportive community, or offering encouragement to someone else. Mind renewal is deeply personal, but it was never intended to be private.    Ready to Take Your Mind Renewal Journey Deeper? I’m looking for five people who are ready to stop feeling stuck, move beyond old patterns and identities, and begin applying the truth they know in practical, everyday ways. Answer three short questions and schedule a private 45-minute conversation with me to learn more. 59. Why Christians Stay Stuck: The Missing Piece of Transformation

Many Christians long for change, yet find themselves repeating the same patterns, carrying the same fears, and telling the same stories about who they are. In this episode, Brenda explores why transformation can feel so difficult, even when we desperately want it. Through the stories of the Israelites, the man at the Pool of Bethesda, and her own healing journey, she uncovers the missing piece of lasting transformation: learning to let go of what is familiar and partner with God in the renewal of the mind. If you've ever wondered why you still feel stuck despite loving God, this conversation will remind you that lasting change is possible. Freedom begins when we stop agreeing with our past and start agreeing with what God says is true about us.   🔑 Key Episode Insights Familiar doesn't always mean healthy. Sometimes it simply means practiced. Mind renewal is not a self-improvement project. It's a partnership with God. Lasting transformation requires us to release old identities and embrace who God says we are in Christ. Neuroscience confirms that familiar thought patterns are easier to repeat, but new pathways can be built through intentional practice and faith. God never asks us to transform ourselves. He simply invites us to trust Him with the next step. Transformation isn't becoming someone else. It's becoming who God created you to be.   🧠 Why This Matters Many of us assume we're stuck because we lack discipline, motivation, or faith. More often, we're simply attached to what feels familiar. Mind renewal helps us recognize the difference. When we learn to identify old thought patterns, release unhealthy identities, and agree with God's truth, we begin experiencing the freedom and peace He intended for us all along. Transformation doesn't happen overnight, but it is available to every believer willing to take the next step.     🛠 Practical Mind Renewal Tool(s) This week's reflection exercise invites you to spend time with the Holy Spirit exploring three powerful questions: What feels familiar in your life right now? What does it do for you? What is God asking you to leave behind? What old identity are you still carrying that Jesus already nailed to the cross? Who would I be if I no longer introduced myself through this struggle? You'll also complete two simple statements designed to reveal where fear may still be competing with faith and where God is inviting you into greater freedom and identity in Christ. Without my struggle, I am afraid I would be ___________. In Christ, I am ___________.   🎉 One Year of Hope Celebration This week, we continue celebrating one year of renewed minds through the One Year of Hope Celebration. Your voice matters. 58. 5 Life-Changing Lessons I've Learned About Renewing the Mind

Have you ever found yourself asking, "Why do I keep repeating the same patterns?" In this special anniversary episode, Brenda reflects on one year of the Day One of Sobriety podcast and shares five life-changing lessons God has taught her about mind renewal, healing, and lasting transformation. Through the lens of Scripture and neuroscience, you'll discover that change isn't mysterious, reserved for a select few, or dependent on stronger willpower. You'll learn why applying truth matters more than collecting information, how awareness begins the renewal process, why identity in Christ is foundational, and how repetition and relationship play a vital role in emotional healing and freedom. If you've ever wondered whether lasting change is possible, this episode will remind you that God designed your mind to be renewed.   🔑 Key Episode Insights Lasting transformation begins when truth moves from something you know to something you intentionally practice. Awareness is the first step in mind renewal. You can't renew a thought you never recognize. Your identity in Christ is stronger than your willpower and influences the choices you make every day. Repetition is not failure. It is one of the ways God designed us to participate in the renewal process. Lasting transformation is deeply personal, but it was never meant to happen in isolation. Scripture reveals the process of renewal, and neuroscience helps us understand how God designed our minds to change.   🧠 Why This Matters Many believers love God and sincerely want to change, yet still feel stuck in the same thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This episode reminds us that transformation is not about trying harder. It's about partnering with God as He renews our minds one thought, one choice, and one day at a time. When we understand how God designed us to grow, we can stop feeling defeated by the process and begin embracing it. Mind renewal brings greater peace, emotional regulation, confidence in our identity, and hope that lasting change is possible.     🛠 Practical Mind Renewal Tool Five Questions for Mind Renewal This week's practical tool is a downloadable one-page reflection guide featuring the five questions explored throughout the episode. These questions are designed to help you pause, reflect, and invite the Holy Spirit into the process of renewing your mind. 57. How Renewing My Mind Changed Everything: The Story Behind Day One of Sobriety

One year ago, the Day One of Sobriety podcast began with one mission: helping people discover freedom through the renewal of their minds. In this special anniversary episode, Brenda shares the story behind Day One of Sobriety, how God used her own journey of healing and transformation, and why changing behavior was never the real answer. True transformation begins when we allow God to renew our thoughts, beliefs, and identity. You’ll discover how Scripture and neuroscience reveal that change is possible, why information alone does not create transformation, and how applying God’s truth daily leads to lasting freedom.   🔑 Key Episode Insights Why destructive habits and unhealthy patterns are often symptoms of deeper thoughts, beliefs, and identity struggles How Romans 12:2 reveals God’s design for transformation through renewing the mind Why understanding how God created the brain to change helps us break free from old thought patterns The difference between simply knowing truth and learning how to apply it in everyday life How one step of obedience grew into a global community of people seeking healing, hope, and renewed minds Why God does not waste the parts of our story we surrender to Him   🧠 Why This Matters Many people love God and genuinely want to change, but still find themselves asking, “Why am I still stuck?” Mind renewal helps us understand that transformation is not about trying harder to manage outward behavior. It is about allowing God to renew the thoughts, beliefs, and patterns shaping how we see ourselves and live each day. Freedom is found as we move from simply hearing truth to practicing it.   🎉 One Year of Hope Celebration This week, we are celebrating one year of renewed minds through the One Year of Hope Celebration. 56. Rebuilding Connection: Healing Loneliness Through Mind Renewal

Healing from loneliness isn't about waiting for life to suddenly feel different. It's about taking small, intentional steps that move you from isolation toward connection. In this final episode of The Hidden Cost of Loneliness series, Brenda shares practical, faith-based strategies for reconnecting with God, yourself, and others while renewing your mind with God's truth. If you've recognized the walls you've built, uncovered the stories loneliness has been telling you, or long to experience deeper healing and freedom, this episode will help you move from awareness into action. You'll discover how Scripture, neuroscience, and practical mind renewal work together to create lasting transformation, one renewed thought at a time.   🔑 Key Episode Insights Healing from loneliness is built through small, intentional choices rather than one dramatic breakthrough. Renewing your mind begins with replacing the stories loneliness has rehearsed with God's truth. Honest connection with God creates space for healing as we bring our thoughts and emotions into His presence. Reconnecting with yourself starts by becoming aware of what you're truly feeling instead of avoiding or suppressing your emotions. Healthy relationships are rebuilt one safe step at a time, creating new experiences that strengthen hope, trust, and emotional resilience. The Holy Spirit partners with us throughout the transformation process, guiding us toward truth, healing, and lasting freedom.   🧠 Why This Matters Loneliness often convinces us that isolation is safer than connection. Left unchallenged, those repeated thoughts become patterns that shape our identity, relationships, and emotional well-being. The good news is that God designed both our minds and our brains to change. As we intentionally choose truth over fear and connection over isolation, we begin creating new pathways of healing. Mind renewal isn't simply changing what we think. It's partnering with God to become who He created us to be.   🛠 Practical Mind Renewal Tool The Connection Rebuild Plan This week's practical resource helps you move from understanding into application by identifying one intentional step toward reconnecting with God, yourself, and one other person.
