Is the Clone Army Legal? Doug Defends Star Wars: The Clone Wars

The Clone Wars may be one of the most important conflicts in Star Wars history but legally, the Republic has some serious problems. In this episode of Doug Defends, Doug and Billy dive into Star Wars: The Clone Wars and break down some of the biggest legal questions from the series, including whether the clone troopers are effectively a slave army, whether Ahsoka is being used as a child soldier, when clones are legally allowed to disobey orders, and whether the Jedi crossed the line by training an insurgency on Onderon. We break down: Whether Slick and Cut Lawquane have any legal right to reject military service Whether the clone army can legally be considered forced labor or slavery Ahsoka Tano fighting in a war at roughly 14 years old The legality of Padawans being placed in active combat Pong Krell’s orders on Umbara and when soldiers can legally refuse commands Rex’s authority to remove a commanding officer Dogma killing Krell after he has already been captured The Jedi training Saw Gerrera and the Onderon rebels The difference between insurgents, rebels, and terrorists And this is only Volume 1. There is a lot more Clone Wars law left to cover. What should we tackle in The Clone Wars Vol. 2? Real lawyer. Fictional lawbreakers. Your Move, Creep! Doug Defends Robocop (1987)

RoboCop is the future of law enforcement...but is he actually legally allowed to be a cop? In 1987’s RoboCop, Detroit police officer Alex Murphy is brutally killed, rebuilt by OCP and sent back onto the streets as a heavily armed cyborg police officer. But if Murphy was legally declared dead, can OCP simply turn him back into a cop? Can a robot or AI be given police powers? And if RoboCop is just a machine, are any of his arrests actually legal? Real defense attorney Doug Ridley and Billy Business break down the surprisingly complicated law behind RoboCop, including whether a corporation can fund and control a public police department, whether Directive 4 effectively puts OCP executives above the law, and how much police authority could ever be delegated to artificial intelligence. Then there’s RoboCop’s actual police work. When an armed robber unloads a shotgun into him, RoboCop responds by launching the guy through glass…and then just leaves without arresting him. Was the force justified? And does RoboCop have a legal duty to take the suspect into custody and get him medical attention? We also tackle OCP’s catastrophic ED-209 demonstration, where an employee is killed in a boardroom and everyone somehow just goes back to work, plus your fan questions about Murphy’s marriage, RoboCop testifying in court, who owns his recorded memories and whether RoboCop could ever retire. By the end, we finally answer the question: Is RoboCop legally a cop?   The Doug Defends Team: Doug Ridley - Host, Defense Attorney at Ridley Defense Billy Business - Co-Host, Producer, Editor Linda Weg - Director of Operations   Music by www.purple-planet.com

It's Not THAT Bad! Doug Defends Green Lantern (2011)

It’s the 50th episode of Doug Defends and this time, Doug isn’t just defending a character. He’s defending the movie. Green Lantern (2011) has spent the last 15 years being called one of the worst superhero movies ever made. But does it really deserve that reputation? Doug and Billy make the case for Ryan Reynolds’ infamous DC movie while digging into the surprisingly complicated legal questions behind the Green Lantern Corps. If Green Lanterns are basically space cops, who gave them jurisdiction? Can you commit a crime in outer space? What happens if a murder takes place aboard a spacecraft with no witnesses and no body? Could Hal Jordan legally arrest someone on Earth and take them to Oa? And does a dying Green Lantern handing over his ring actually give his replacement any legal authority? Plus, Doug shares his personal connection to Green Lantern and the unforgettable Comic-Con moment involving his son Connor and Ryan Reynolds that made his family fans of the movie before they had even seen it. Green Lantern may not be the greatest superhero movie ever made. But the defense is prepared to prove one thing: It’s NOT that bad.
