Pain & Pleasure, Finding Equilibrium, & Finding Joy In Discomfort

What if discomfort could actually make everyday life feel better? This week on 2 Curly Haired Girls with ADHD, Florence and Julia get into the relationship between pain, pleasure, dopamine, and the brain’s constant attempt to find equilibrium — and why voluntarily doing hard or uncomfortable things might change the way we experience the rest of our lives. Our brains are constantly trying to return to baseline: pleasure can be followed by a comedown, while discomfort can sometimes create its own rebound in the opposite direction. But what about intentionally choosing safe, voluntary discomfort as a way to become more present? From hot yoga to improv, we talk about how uncomfortable experiences can pull you out of your thoughts, reconnect you with your body, and potentially make ordinary moments feel a whole lot better. And then, naturally, can you actually find pleasure inside an uncomfortable experience? Florence has been experimenting with that during dental cleanings — consciously noticing tension, relaxing her body, breathing through discomfort, and changing her relationship to an experience she normally dreads.Along the way, the girls also get into ADHD executive dysfunction, visual cues for closing open loops, self-regulation, mindfulness, relationships and communication styles, improv, Buddhism, non-duality, equanimity, cutting your own hair, dental anxiety, and why Florence and Julia attempting to make a podcast without a producer resulted in episodes sitting untouched on a computer.Plus: -Vocal warmups are apparently a turnoff-Florence accidentally makes herself more attractive while trying to disgust someone with a chicken wing-Julia briefly becomes a questionable life guru- Rob from The Traitors and his snakes -The girls achieve what may be their most chaotic level of ADHD energy yet.If your brain also jumps from neuroscience to spirituality to haircuts to the dentist and somehow finds a connecting thread between all of them — welcome home.2 Curly Haired Girls with ADHD is a comedy podcast about ADHD, neurodivergence, relationships, mental health, self-discovery, and the beautifully chaotic experience of trying to understand your own brain.Subscribe for new full episodes and clips, and tell us in the comments: Do you have something uncomfortable that actually makes you feel better afterward?#ADHD #ADHDWomen #Neurodivergent #ADHDPodcast #MentalHealth #Dopamine #Mindfulness #SelfRegulation #WomenWithADHD #2CurlyHairedGirlsWithADHD

The conversation also gets into low ferritin and iron deficiency, and how something as seemingly simple as low iron stores can show up as fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, and feeling like something is just off. They talk about the frustrating process of trying to understand what your body is telling you, interpreting bloodwork and ferritin levels, and finally finding explanations for symptoms you may have been dealing with for years. It’s part of a much bigger conversation about women’s health, ADHD, and learning to advocate for yourself medically — especially when symptoms that have become “normal” to you might actually be worth investigating. The girls also get into tongue ties, myofascial release, body tension, fainting, and the strange experience of finally discovering that something you thought was just a weird quirk might actually have a name. And, naturally, it all comes back to the brain. They talk about ADHD in women, getting diagnosed later in life, recognizing ADHD symptoms you never realized were ADHD, and what happens when years of seemingly unrelated experiences suddenly start making a lot more sense. It’s an episode about ADHD, bodies, diagnoses, and the extremely specific health problems you didn't know you needed to Google until someone mentioned them on a podcast. In this episode:• ADHD in women and late ADHD diagnosis• R-CPD / no-burp syndrome• Why some people physically can’t burp• Bloating and pressure from R-CPD• Fainting and weird body symptoms• Tongue ties• Myofascial release and body tension• Discovering there’s actually a name for your “weird thing”• Neurodivergence and understanding your body• Low ferritin and what happens when your iron stores are depleted• The connection between low ferritin, fatigue, dizziness, and fainting• Why “normal” bloodwork doesn’t always mean you feel normal• Learning to advocate for yourself when you know something feels off• And, obviously, a lot of oversharingSubscribe for new episodes of 2 Curly Haired Girls with ADHD and more conversations about ADHD, neurodivergence, relationships, mental health, bodies, and everything else our brains decide is relevant.#ADHD #ADHDWomen #WomenWithADHD #LateDiagnosedADHD #Neurodivergent #Neurodiversity #RCPD #NoBurpSyndrome #ADHDPodcast #ComedyPodcast #WomenInComedy #KateOwens #ferritin #lowferritin

Why ADHD Brains Need Exercise, Not More Willpower & How We Got Through College

This week on 2 Curly Haired Girls with ADHD, we're diving into why exercise seems to do so much more than improve physical health—it can completely change how an ADHD brain functions. From rowing through college and accidentally discovering the perfect focus hack to why meditation, driving, and even showering spark our best ideas, we're unpacking the surprising ways movement affects dopamine, executive function, and creativity. We also get into the reality of ADHD scheduling, the guilt of saying no to social plans, pricing your own work without apologizing for it, designing your environment to work with your brain instead of against it, and why traditional studying never made sense until we found learning strategies that actually fit how our brains work. As always, there are plenty of side quests—including Batman, vampires, bumblebees that technically shouldn't fly, dolphins, and why catching a crab is something you definitely want to avoid. If you've ever wondered why your brain works so differently—or why going for a workout somehow solves problems you've been stuck on all day—this episode is for you. Topics: ADHD, exercise and dopamine, executive function, productivity, meditation, learning styles, studying with ADHD, ADHD relationships, time management, scheduling overwhelm, self-employment, pricing your services, environment design, creativity, rowing, focus, neuroscience, mental health, and neurodivergence.
