Don't Ignore The Knock. Here's why.

Someone is knocking at your door. Do you ignore it? As someone with a background in law enforcement,, I’ve seen how important basic crime-prevention habits can be - and one simple piece of advice I gave in an old YouTube Short made A LOT of people angry. In this video, I explain what I actually meant - and why this has nothing to do with whether you own a firearm, Canada’s self-defence laws, or the debate over Castle Doctrine. The bigger issue is personal safety and crime prevention.Criminals look for opportunities. An apparently empty home can be one of them. I explain why letting someone know that your home is occupied can sometimes be an important part of making your home a less attractive target - without opening the door, confronting anyone, or putting yourself in danger. I also discuss the heartbreaking case of 12-year-old Emily Elizabeth Haddock, who was killed during a home burglary in 2007, and why her story illustrates just how quickly a home break-in can turn into something far more serious. We also talk about:• What to do when someone unexpectedly knocks on your door• Why you don't necessarily want your home to appear unoccupied• Doorbell cameras, windows, lighting and other simple precautions• Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)• Home security and break-and-enter prevention• Firearms and home defence• Canadian self-defence laws and Castle Doctrine• Why owning a firearm is not the same thing as having a home-security plan• Why trusting your instincts matters Your first line of defence is YOU. This isn't about Canada vs. the United States. It's not about guns vs. no guns. It's about personal safety - and the things ordinary people can do to reduce their risk. What do YOU do when someone unexpectedly knocks on your door? Let me know in the comments. These conversations need to be had.Subscribe to Canada Off Script for honest conversations about Canada, crime, policing, safety, culture and the issues that affect all of us.Stay sharp. Stay safe.
